Hawks went into the game with 5 major changes to last weeks team that narrowly lost to Geelong. Key forward Jarryd Roughead out for the season, Brent Renouf the ruckman out for several weeks after an operation as a result of a clash in last weeks game. Speedy Premiership wingman Clinton Young out with a hamstring. Brent Guerra suffered a perforated eardrum after a behind the ball clash with Joel Selwood. Ryan Schoenmakers was a last minute withdrawal after injuring a foot at training on the Thursday.

Due to ash cloud that affected flights the Hawks and Gold Coast travelled a day earlier to Launceston.

Clarko defends restings

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson has defended his decision to rest eight players for the Hawks' round 24 clash against Gold Coast.

Lance Franklin, Luke Hodge, Cyril Rioli, Shaun Burgoyne, Brad Sewell, Grant Birchall, Jordan Lewis and Max Bailey will be freshened up for the finals and didn't make the trip to Queensland for Saturday afternoon's match at Metricon Stadium.

Hawks pip plucky Suns

HAWTHORN has survived a scare from Gold Coast to record a nine-point win at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

The Hawks led by 10 points at the final change and after two Brendan Whitecross goals to open the quarter, blew the lead to 22 and looked home.
