View Full Version : Recycled Players (i.e Ruckmen)

If what is being said comes true and SES retires - we MUST and I mean MUST recruit an existing ruckman. Now many will say lets go with youth and I agree - I think O'Keefe is our next 1st ruckman with both Hille and Layc@ck pinch hitting playing forward roles. My problem is though, next year without SES - what happens if (a) Hille continues to ruck like schit and doesn;t improve enough or (b) he gets injured. Who the hell would we play then. I'd be happy to give O'Keefe a go, but that is way to much to ask a kid to do, so we are left with most likely - Henneman rucking (if he is even on our list).

For these reasons I believe we must go for a Matty Allan type. Never really liked the guy - but he would be a handy player to have for 2-3 years while the other ruckmen develop a bit more. And he could alwasy just be used as a back up. Street is another I can think of who will be on the market -but I am not overly impressed with him.

Any thoughts??

as long as they come CHEAP, that's the main thing.
didn't we have a chance to pick up allan last year though? i remember sheedy saying he'd rather give a young player a go.

I think Allen was asking for a lot of cash last year. I think he's had a dose of reality now and should be much cheaper.

Hille had 348 hitouts this year which is the second most in a season for an Essendon ruckman for at least the past decade - and he only played #1 ruck for half the season. He kicked 20 goals and was 5th in clearances. He has done bloody well for his first real crack at it. Don't give up on him this early.

Hille is coming along nicely, we just need a decent backup until the next lot come through. Allan is too risky, injuries have ruined his career.

It isn't that Hille is a bad ruckman; I've been impressed with the strides he's made (although I'm a bit disappointed with his ability to nail set shots when the game is on the line).

But he needs somebody to spell him, and Henneman isn't the guy to do it.

Look at Primus, he has Brogan & Lade. At Brisbane they have McDonald, Charman & Keating. Sydney has Ball (when healthy) to spare Goodes. Fraser has Rocca & McKee. Gardiner has Cox. Sandilands and Simmonds.

well said stealth, its not that hes bad. Its because he has no backup
