Who do you think will win and why?

Sunbury for mine. They're a classy outfit, and it must have been a bit of a shock to them to lose to Redan recently.

Though of course Daylesford (and Redan of course) are no pushovers either. They're unknown quantities to me.

SO if this is the PF this weekend, does this mean Redan are already in the GF? I only saw them win one final, but thought they were only about 5th in the ladder after H&As.

I was assuming they'd won a 1S or EF and still had to win another before gaining a GF berth.

Sunbury wastes chances as Redan awaits final
By David Brehaut
Sunday, 14 September 2003

BALLARAT Football League reigning premier Redan has booked a second consecutive grand final berth.

A resolute Redan took the direct path to the September 28 premiership play-off with a 12-point victory over a wayward Sunbury in the second semi-final at a wind-swept MacPherson Park, Melton, on Saturday.

Redan now has the luxury of a week off - something coach Brett Quinlan is rapt to get.

Quinlan said long and medium-term injuries meant several players were "underdone" and the break would do them the world of good.

The Lions will meet the winner of Sunbury and Daylesford, which play in the preliminary final at Ballarat's Eastern Oval on Sunday.

In a character-building effort, Redan fought back from a two-goal deficit 16 minutes into the last quarter to leave Sunbury licking psychological wounds inflicted in the storming finish.

Sunbury has to regroup and do what Redan did last year if it is win a fourth BFL flag - take the long road to the grand final.

A master stroke by Quinlan at the 15-minute mark of the last term turned the match Redan's way.

After trailing most of the day in a low-scoring encounter, the irrepressible Brent Purcell and Jarred Steel kicked goals to sweep Sunbury to what looked like a match-winning 12-point lead after eight minutes.

Redan, which had given everything, appeared just about out on its feet.

Sunbury was leading Redan to the football, constantly had more players at the fall of the ball and setting up loose men through the midfield with ease.

Needing something out of the box, Quinlan took his brother and captain Dru Quinlan off the interchange and put him at full forward.

Dru Quinlan is one of the Redan's "underdone" contingent, having just returned from a long lay-off with osteitis pubis.

The Lion skipper was used as an impact player with huge success in Redan's elimination final win over Darley, and this was his role against Sunbury - regularly going on and off.

Within 90 seconds of crossing the white line and heading to the goal square, Quinlan kicked Redan's first goal since three minutes after the half-time break.

Inspired, Redan came to life and the whole complexion of the match changed.

Redan suddenly refound its focus.

Dru Quinlan took this to yet another level when he booted his second major to lock up scores as the clock ticked into time on.

Then Matt Walsh kicked his fifth goal for the day and Ash Barker did the same after being on the end of a Quinlan handball, and Redan was home.

On a day when goals were hard to come by owing to a wind that in the third quarter reach gale-force, Walsh was a major contributor for a second week running.

He kicked four of Redan's six goals to three-quarter time.

However, it was in defence where the most influential players were found.
Back from injury, Gareth Hose had a sensational day running out of defence.

He knocked up getting kicks in the first quarter and carried on with the job for 120 minutes.

He was sure-footed in everything he did, complementing the rock-hard defence of Mark Kennedy, Haldane Nelson and Adrian King, and defensive qualities of Aaron Freeland in a victory which needed plenty from every player.

Kennedy's coolness under enormous pressure, whether marking, tackling or making the one percenters was invaluable.

Sunbury's Purcell was clearly his team's best - a class act all over the ground.
Matthew Payne was a livewire with Justin Lewis and Matt Kelly, until injurying a knee in the second quarter.

Sunbury's Tim Little had the better of the ruck battle, but Redan big man Orren Stephenson still made his mark.

For the second week running, Sunbury paid dearly for poor kicking in front of goal.

After letting Redan kick 4.0 with a strong wind at its back in the opening quarter, Sunbury wasted chances when it had its turn - kicking 1.9 in the second term to nine points at the big break.

And that, for a greater part, was the story of the day.

As for Sunday's game, I can't see Sunbury losing, not especially after the way the season's gone for them to date and with the motivation of last weekend's hiccup fresh in the players' minds.

Sunbury to play Redan in the BFL grand final.

Sunbury should beat Daylesford easily but if they dont i would be tipping it would be one of the biggest boil overs in Country footy for quite a while.
I think Redan won the EF then after playing Sunburr are in the GF.
You at the GF Mobbs??

Thanks tige, I mustn't have been keeping up. Nah won't be there, just take an interest in all regional leagues is all, and because of their playing strip and me being a Roys fan tend to follow Redan.

(Yep I know Sunbury are the Lions too, and have Lupson playing for them, but they've had so much success they don't feel like a Roys replacement to me :D ... also Sunbury might have a D Lupson but Redan have a B Quinlan!)

Sunbury should win comfortably.Bittop heavy last week against a speedy side but they should flog Daylesford on paper (or any side for that matter).

Sunbury won on Sunday, as Daylesford ran out of petrol in the final term.

Sunbury 14.17 (101) d Daylesford 12.18 (90)

Desperate Demons tire in last quarter
By Ken Hill
Sunday, 21 September 2003

SUNBURY marched into the 2003 Ballarat Football League grand final yesterday overcoming, by 11 points, a desperate but tiring Daylesford in the last quarter of the preliminary final at the Eastern Oval.

The Demons led by 17 points at the first change, were down by 10 at half-time and clung to a three-point lead at three-quarter time.

But Daylesford did not capitalise on chances when it had Sunbury on the hop in the third term.

Sunbury coach Peter Freeman asked Col Laurie to get at the foot of the ball and push forward.

He did and was rewarded with two last-quarter goals.

Ruckman Tim Little also imposed himself in the last term with telling marks.

The penultimate round of the season started at a ferocious pace with Daylesford kicking accurately to position.

Aaron Thomas, however, was to prove the nemesis of Daylesford coach Tim Beacham until Beacham broke lose in the last term.

Hayden Cartledge was clearly Daylesford's best but when Luke Adams had the ball he made Daylesford look dangerous.

But a rare mistake by Adams from the kick-out saw Laurie intercept and goal in the last term.

The versatility of Daryl Griffin off half back and in the middle for Sunbury made a difference as 2003 Henderson Medallist Justin Lewis had a big say in the engine room and around the ground.

Firebrand Dean Lupson kept his cool and when on the ball was brilliant, kicking two telling goals in the second and fourth quarters.

Daylesford, at times, seemed to have Lewis' and Griffin's measure in the middle as Griffin prefers to run on his right and Lewis his left.

Little, with the assistance of Lee Fishenden and Ian Sparry eventually overcame courageous Demon Scott Winduss in the ruck.

There was one mismatch that stood out for much of the game - the big Leigh Nolan was hamstrung by the high-leaping centre half-forward Lee James who had a spell in defence late in the game.

Daylesford's Clayton Scoble and Travis Grigg were lively up forward but it was a screamer and goal by Peter Jenkin in the first quarter that set the Demons alight.

Matthew Payne was also a live wire for Sunbury off a wing and Anthony Beacham tried valiantly to keep the Demons going.

Sunbury worked hard to keep Luke Adams out of the corridor, drawing him away from the game as much as possible but Adams was too smart and got his side going on a number of occasions.

Demon Bernie Lynch was a potential match-winner and did not give up trying with sweeping left-foot kicks into the forward line.

But Lewis got kicks when it counted with assistance from Griffin and captain Mark Power.

The scoreboard could not keep up with the see-sawing style of match in the last term - a lot of the crowd thinking the match was closer than it was late in the game.

From three points down, Sunbury roared to 19 points ahead then Daylesford chiselled its way back but going goal-for goal in the end left the Dees 11 points short.

Sunbury made two late changes - Wes Hehir (knee) and Aaron Willoughby (hamstring), out for Jamie Lobb, Col Laurie.

So it'll be Redan v Sunbury at the Eastern Oval in Ballarat on Sunday.

Interesting note-- Sunbury will be playing for three flags on grand final day, the club's under-18 and reserve squads are in title games of their own as well.

I think all 3 sides will win, The 18s will be hugely motivated as they lost the corresponding game last year to the Lakers. Sunbury 2s have been dominant the whole season and should beat Melton South, we all know how good the seniors are and with Former senior WAFL player Wes Hair coming back into the side along with 60 senior game player For Coburg in the VFL Willoughby also back, things should pan out fairly well for them. Will be a great day up at Ballarat i highly recomend a trip up there!!!.
