In 2000 we had 8 players finish the year with 20+ goals.
This year we had 3.
We have lost too many goal kicking midfielders and tall forwards over the years. We used to have Lloyd, Lucas and Alessio terrorising opposition backmen. Now its just Lloyd, with Hille chipping in when he gets the chance.
We used to have the scoring influence of Bewick, Long, Blumfield, Caracella, Mercuri, Moorcroft and Rioli but now we just have Cupido.
We desperately need more goal kickers, not just from the specialist forwards but from the midifelders as well.
So who is going to step up?
For starters Rama wasn't there this year, and he can certainly kick goals. As can J.Johnson who can expect to spend more time at half-forward when our midfield is strengthened. Basically the problem is that because our midfield was a little weak this year, we didn't have the cattle to be rotating blokes through the HFF/FP like we could in 2000

Lloyd
Hille
Cupido
Hird
Laycock
Solomon (if he kicked straight)
Bolton
Richards
They should all kick 20+ if they play full seasons

not likely next season
that's why i think getting brown would be a good idea, he could be a goalkicking midfielders. doesn't have to play in a pocket, and wouldn't be suited to it in our team nayway

Bolton missed 2 games and kicked 12 goals. Still an improvement on his previous years. By the year 2006 he'll be hitting 20.
Jason Johnsons a poorer kick than Sol. Don't base one poor kick in the wet last week against some of the doozies JJ has missed at colonial.

Far too reliant on Lloyd from mid 2001. Cupido made such a big difference this year.
Winderlich seems to have an eye for goal (loved his one vs Port) - hopefully he makes the step up next season. Same deal for Harvey.

good call.
if we were to snare brown he would certainly make a difference but guys like rioli need to get moreand we need goals out of our half foward line. the problemo with our HF line is that we dont have a goal kicking target (we play bolton there) and we end up resting our young midfielders who push right up the gound there. this goes for guys like bullen who find themselves playing a midfield role from half foward and not trying to kick goals.

Porny, are you giving Cupes some sort of acknowledgement for a pretty good year ?

My god.
My sentiments exactly
Last year Lloyd kicked 48 and he was our highest goalkicker
This year Lloyd kicked 93, and Cupes 39
Hille got 20 as well I think
As far as volume goes, we've really improved on 2002...

solomon did have a poor goal kicking ratio however this year. as for bolton, if he plays a season on a wing or up forward then he could well. you can add jj to that list also if you want but id wouldn't be expecting him to kick 20.
on second thoughts, just change the list from should, to could

When it comes right down to it, we have a lot of players in our side who seem to be ordinary shots at goal.
Hille - missed set shots at absolutely crucial moments throughout the year
Hird - Anzac Day bag aside, he missed his fair share all year
Mercuri - Once an absolute dead-eye, his loss of form is well documented.
Bolton - seems a bit more streaky than the others; he'll go 0.3 or 3.0 while the others are all kicking 2.2
J.Johnson - as mentioned, though he appears to be getting better in this area.
Solomon - as mentioned

hille gets the hard ones, and misses the easy ones.
hopefully it's just a mental thing that can be overcome next year. i don't think it's technical, but it could be a combination i guess.
I think Haynes is good for 20 goals in a full season on the HFF. He doesn't seem to be mentioned in the thread and would have been on > 20gpy pace from the games he's played.

Accuracy for goal is not the problem. We were 3rd best in the league this year for conversion. The problem is simply not having players that are goal kickers. I doubt we'll be able to turn the likes of the Johnsons, Solly, Bolton, etc into regular contributors. They do our grunt work. They don't have the polish or the goal sense and probably never will.
Aside from hoping that Richards, Laycock, Johns and maybe Harvey step up (let's not forget that we would have to drop 4 senior players to fit them in the side), i would like to see McVeigh and Rioli up forward more often. These two have the skill and ability to put scores on the board.

Haynes could get 20+ at HFF, but I think he would be more valuable on a wing, kicking fewer but setting up more.

Accuracy for goal is SOME of the problem. Both JJ and Solomon missed very easy goals throughout the year. If we could just improve the goal kicking of these two without doing anything else, we should get an extra 20 goals easily.
