What are your favourite/most memorable Essendon games of all time, Premierships aside? Bomber mag did this a couple of years back for games in the 90s, just looking at other opinions. Some of mine:

Round 6, 1993: Essendon v Geelong, MCG
Earliest game I can remember going to, was 6yo at the time. Salmon 10, Ablett 14, a pure classic.

Prelim Final, '93: Essendon v Adelaide, MCG
Listened to this in the garage with the old man. Rex Hunt the caller on 3AW. Can still hear him...."WAAAATTSSSOOOOOOOONNNN" :D

Round 22, 1996: Essendon v Footscray, MCG
Massive contest all night, was sealed with 30 secs left with an ice cool finish by Mercuri from 45 on the run

Round ?, 1998: Essendon v Carlton, MCG
25 points down halfway through the last quarter. A young JJ gives us the spark before Silvagni's 'Barry Crocker' kick feel to Lucas who nailed it. Game Over.

Round 17, 1999: Essendon v North Melbourne, MCG
Carey 10, Lloyd 7. Absolute pearler of a game.

Qual. Final, 2000: Essendon v North Melbourne, MCG
..oh that was a spanking!

Round 15, 2001: WB v Essendon, Colonial
Not so much the game, but Slash Moorcroft's 6-goal half and mark of the year.

Round 16, 2001: Essendon v North Melbourne, MCG
69 points down. JJ, Hird, Lloyd and Hardwick bring us back from the dead.

Elim Final, 2003: Freo v Essendon, Subiaco
A victory against the odds if there ever was such a thing

When Ryan O'Connor kicked a difficult goal on the run during the last to pull closer I thought we'd win. I said if he can kick that, we can win

Ad this years win over Brisbane just because we finally got one back

Two more would be in 97 when we came from behind to beat the Lions - I think it was 42 points about 2 minutes into the final term (I think it was porno man Scotty Bamford who kicked that goal) - and of course

almost my all time favourite game - Harvs last game against the Crows. Very memorable for many reasons - Harvs had the best send off you could get, Lloyd kicked a bag, Wally made a few Crows players mess their pants, and another not footy fact was the day Princess Di died (and Ayrton Sena died around that time too).

Looked like he'd just eaten a bowl of sh*t soup.

One of the all time greats, no doubt. Also memorable for Moorcroft's Mark Yeates impression on Peter Vardy in the centre square in the last qtr. It was like watching schoolyard bullies in that second half.

Agreed. Sat in the Legends Stand @ Optarse Oval and watched some bird cry uncontrollably for 30mins when the announcement came over the PA that she had passed away.

But not a dry eye in the house when Harvs was chaired off. An Adelaide supporter had been mouthing off all day, especially to the 'traitor' Sean Wellman. To cap off the day a Bomber turned around and socked the bastard right in the nose!

Remember that bump - Vardy was seeing stars - and you can;t forget jarman having a dummy spit with Harvs - can;t believe St. Kilda never watched that game on how to beat Adelaide.

That couldn't have been in 97.

At no change were they that far in front during the game. We played them once in round 6.

Ess 1.5 5.8 11.9 15.12.102
Bris 2.5 4.11 6.14 9.17.71

I could look up the game you are taking about, I think it was in 98, but I can't be arsed. (And if your going to ask how a managed to dig the qaurter by quarter scores out for that game, it's becuase I have the 97 year book sitting next to the pc here.)

For mine, the best was 97 vs adelaide. Considering we were had the worst injury list of any team, being the last team to beat the eventual premiers was a great feeling.

I remember the announcement "Ladies and gentleman, we regrett to inform you that Princess Diana has died as a result of a car accident" There was a few moments of stunned silence, which was broken by one women shouting "Who gives a f**k".

I made a nifty banner that game too, something with a crow and a football wedged up its arse. If I can find a pic of it I'll scan it.

The one in '96, vs Geelong, with Bewick kicking 9.

93 prelim- Brilliant atmosphere. I was at the game and i cant remember a louder bomber crowd. Micheal longs goal where he took off from a standing start exploded away, weaving through a couple of defenders and kicking a goal from 40 out was better than the goal he kicked in the granny. The goal Mercs kicked to put us within three goals nearly brought the stands down. Watsons goal to seal it did bring the stands down.

23 points down at 3/4 time against Brissy, they kicked the first 2-3 of the qtr to give them a seemingly match winning lead.

****, how did I miss that one.

The book was cheap as there was heaps of misprints in it and even stuck other clubs results in it. Ie: contents page for round 21 reads "Sydney: The Kill of the century - SOS as Plugger crashes". That would explain why I got both the 96 and 97 books for $4.95.

One game I have never seen, but I read so much about - and I would still love to see was the comeback game in 92 against Melbourne. 48 points I think it was in the last quarter and we came bakc to win. I still remember seeing the image of Kickett taking a mark in the goal square just to save a point (which we won by).

Another ripper- just becasue I hate the scum/filth was in 93 in the wet on a Friday night when we flogged them and all of a sudden people started to believe we could win a flag that year.

Essendon Vs Melbourne - 1992?
The game where we came from 45 or so points down at 3/4 time.

Essendon Vs Adelaide - 1993 Preliminary Final
I remember being the only one amongst our group who still thought we could win at 1/2 time.

Essendon Vs North Melbourne - Round 16? 2001?
Easily the most bizarre game of football I've ever been to. Sitting on the Southern Stand wing amongst the Essendon members, you could hear every whisper around you during the 1st quarter (interupted regularly by the faint sound of the comparitively small North Melb cheer squad who were sitting behind the Ponsford goals and cheering on every goal.)

The comeback in that game was like nothing I've ever seen in any sporting contest. (especially being there) If all football matches were like that, we'd all die of early heart attacks.

Funnily enough, I still thought we could win that one too, even when we were still getting thrashed. :)

Although I'm pretty sure I'd given up at the '92 Melbourne game.....

The 1993 prelim final was definitely my favourite - it had everything that game.

For me, for pure emotion, 1983 Elimination, first finals win since 1968, ending the " eliminitis" (`73,`79, `81 , `82) Supporters openly crying, crowd going absolutely bananas ( that`s when Essendon crowds were at their blood curdling, ear splitting loudest) and beating carlton as well. The club did beautifully that week protecting Roger Merrett " The Hitman" furore was all over the media.
A very special day out at Waverley that one.

The Centenary match against Geelong in 1996, under lights at the 'G on a Wednesday night if I recall. D. Bewick back from a knee reconstruction to kick 9 goals and win it off his own boot. Was one of the all time great ones.

The draw against Richmond in 1995 - the only time in my life I have witnessed a draw and been happy with the result.

Matty Lloyd's debut match, kicking a goal on his knees within a minute. Thank ya muther for the rabbits.

Soccer off the ground. Can i just say that after he kicked it i have gone " The next big thing call"....and some old bomber, who i still see, had a go at me..." He`s done nothing and you come out with that "........Trust me on that....Me and this bloke still laugh about it.

Only blight on the Geelong game was Longy doing his knee it the most screwed up manner ever. Kicking for goal - I mean c'mon! what the hell had he done to deserve that???

I'd forgotten about Long's knee that night.

Still brilliant.

One of my favourite moments was in 97 when Caracella took a mark against the flight of the ball and smacked straight into a Geelong player. Any one else would have been concussed. Cara got up and took his kick and I believe established himself as a handy player in that game.

I miss Cara!!

BTW any game where er beat Carlton ranks highly with me!!

Fav Game??? Hell, i've been to a few doozies....

'92 v Melbourne... I think (don't quote me on this) we were 41 points down at 3/4 time, and G Lyon kicked a goal inside of a minute in the last 1/4... from there it was all red and black...with Gav kicking the winning goal as the final siren sounded...couldn't hear a bloody thing... good *****:D

'93 v Adelaide in the prelim final... 7 goals down at 1/2 time...Longy tearin' the Crows a new @rse in the middle, GOD putting us in front, and Tim sealing it... magic;)

'01 v Roos...Round 16... Yelled myself hoarse in the first 20 minutes...Roos first quarter - don't think they've played better footy since that time... Then "The Comeback"... if u have the dvd, listen to Gary Lyon on the 3AW commentary when JJ rips through the middle and bangs a goal through from 50 in the second quarter...*quote* "these guys are just the best ever"!
Amazingly, both Rob Walls and Lyon tipped us to win, even when we were about 8-9 goals down... the only way this game could've been any better is if it had been against Carlton...
