View Full Version : Gaining expereince
So i heard that GWS are going for more experience in there drafting/recruiting. Does this mean they will trade picks for experience in draft time to get players you will already have an un contracted player from (lets say its, freo ,adelaide, WB, Port and Melbourne at the end of the year) Or will GWS just do more later recruiting from the likes of the VFL, SANFL, NEAFL? and get some bigger bodies that way
Curious to hear the GWS fan bases thoughts on trading away there first rounders for players?

There would be a few SANFL players worth a first or another AFL chance. I hope that GWS go down this path, recruiting more senior players than what Gold Coast did initially. Most of the SANFL/VFL players aswell would wouldn't be highly sought after so may cost a 4th round draft or rookie pick.
As an added bonus, if they have nominated for the draft in the last three years like most of them have, we can actually prelist them for free. The Gold Coast only took advantage of this to trade players, but I wouldn't mind keeping the best.

It's a better strategy than putting all your eggs in the our youth will come good eventually brigade. GWS would be wise to put their team composition strategy somewhere between the Suns youth at all costs approach and the Swans savvy signing of breakout players within established good sides.

Agreed with most of the above. Some mature aged recruits (Podsy, Mzungu etc) have shown just how much of an impact they can have in the AFL, despite missing the draft in their earlier years. Some mature age guys who've developed in the state leagues would be a handy addition. I still reckon we use our picks to nab some of the best recruits in the country, but we need to balance this with some mature bodies who can already play.
Don't underestimate the influence of senior players on youth development as well. Their work ethic, training and attitude will rub off on junior players. Hopefully with 1 or 2 marquee signings and some mature age recruits, this should be achieved.
