Our entire starting 18 are AFL listed players. BH comprise the most AFL listed players; rookies or otherwise, more than any other VFL team.

Even with a new coach, game plan and young players, I still find it slightly strange this team isn't doing better than their ladder position indicates.

As many as 7 of them could be held out for Sunday's game.

Any word as to whether Milne, Young or Lisle are playing?

Lisle is playing, as is Young. Haven't heard Milne's name being called thus far. He's our emergency I'd assume.

Lisle has just been moved forward after playing in defense. Kicked a goal already

Edit: Milne is playing

Very nice win today for Box Hill out at the Oval, which was bathed in sunshine for most of the day. No real breeze to speak of this time. Box Hill were clean and sharp with their ball movement, with the emphasis on running the ball out of defence by hand and then looking for a leading target.

Ladson and Bruce were particularly prominent in midfield, with Ladson using his superior skills (relative to the typical VFL standard) to bring other players into the game. Ladson loves his goal celebrations. He kicked the first or second goal of the game and celebrated it like he had kicked the sealer in the '08 grand final. From what I can recall, both Ladson and Bruce spent time on Brock McLean and made him look like a real turtle at times.

Grimley and Pattison worked well in the ruck the entire game. Pattison also drifted forward and presented well across half-forward, being rewarded with a couple of goals. Lisle started the game at full back but at quarter time, was pushed to full forward by Carroll and was a constant handful for the Bullants defence to contain.

Derick Wanganeen played probably his best game for Box Hill that I've seen. He was a real livewire in the forward line and his constant workrate was rewarded with the four sausage rolls. He's a talented player, but needs to continue to improve his workrate to have a crack at playing seniors in the next few years.

Mirra and Boumann were again prominent in defence. Boumann kept Setanta O'Helpless very quiet in the forward line, while Mirra was great rebounding off half-back for the game.

I also liked the games of Williams, Duryea and Schneider. Unfortunately, the game of Clinton Young left a lot to be desired. Missing targets and running into dead-ends. His basic trick is to get the ball and to pump it forward as far as he can, but he doesn't really look to see where he's kicking. IMO, he's a long way off decent AFL form.

Jarryd Morton was a big improvement on last week's game. Moved well around the half-forward line and got a fair amount of the ball. I still think he has a long way to go to secure a spot on our list, but he was a fair sight better than previous hit-outs.

I haven't read a bad report on Morton for a while now :)

Can't wait to get Wanganeen into our forward line. The missing link. Sure he's been quiet in some games this year, but it's hard for small forwards to perform well in losing teams.

GOod to hear Grimley going well too.

Where were you hiding DF?

Solid win today, plenty to like from a number of our kids.

Wanganeen lit up the crowd a few times, Lisle looked the goods and Boumann/Mirra continued on their pretty good form in the back half. Grimley, Duryea, Morton and Ladson did some nice things too.

Schoey played in the early game for a half. Kicked 2, was forward, and playing well. Langford also impressed those who got there for the early game.

I was distracted quite a bit today, so not going to bother trying to critique the game and players too much.

It was good to stand on the steps and watch a great win though.

Okay, I never do this, so be gentle. I hate rating and commenting on players, but I will try. I seem to miss lots that happens in the backline, apart from the big marks and rebounds. Here goes…

Overall, a fairly decent hitout and performance from the boys. Apart from the last 10 minutes of the second quarter, we pretty much did as we pleased. The main thing to be pleased about was that lots of our midfield run came from stoppages, even if we were probably beaten in the ruck contests. Our defence was stingy and tight, and the likes of Boumann, Pollard, Duryea, Milne and Williams provided some decent run off the back line. Even though Lisle started down back, he structured the back up with lots of vocals and implemented our HFC gameplan with quick switches and holding possession. His move up forward probably proved to be the difference. Probably was beaten by Casboult and Setanta early, but once he went forward...they couldn't buy a goal.

A few Box Hill Listed players of interest.

Boumann – Started off pretty poorly, but got better as the pressure eased. He’s a tall lanky lad but he’s pretty slow. When he got into his groove, the game was over and he could swing back and take a few cheapies. Took a couple of decent contested marks, but is a long way off AFL listing. Reminds me of a raw Michael Johnson.

Gilchrist – Kicked a couple, but was everywhere. Followed the ball, found the ball, proved that he was easily up to this level. Had opportunities to kick a couple more also. Decent kick, and would be happy with his game.

Gibson – Another solid game, as you expect. In and under, did the little things in the third that helped us kick on. I wouldn’t see him as draftable, but is excellent for what he provides.

Pattison – Was beaten in the ruck, but battled around the ground all day. Kicked a few goals, took a few grabs, and was probably the most effective ruckman on the ground. Very slow, and was out on his feet once the game hit the latter stages.

Mirra – Hardly noticed him. Considering I was up the other end, he might have dominated. Did some decent rebounding off HBF, and took a few contested marks. The mud might have hidden his number from me ;)

The Hawthorn Boys:

Williams – Another down back I didn’t notice. When he went into the middle, he was hard at it and cleared the ball more times than not. More games like that with senior bodies around him should free him up to get more of it and be more damaging. I liked the potential here.

Duryea – My pick of the bunch today. Rebounded superbly off Half Back. Was deep in defence early and did so many tough little things that resulted in the ball going coast to coast. He pushed forward as the game progressed, and did everything well. Great hands for a little bloke, great kick when there is space and proved to me that he will be given a chance soon. Worked well in tandem with Schneider, whose games are pretty similar when in defence.

Sierakowski – Was a bit more visible of the back flank and in the middle, but just went along with decent disposal. I don’t see how he was as close as he seems to be in terms of senior selection, but with decent with his pressure acts.

Schneider – Should be a forward, but playing defence/midfield suits him. Is pretty smart, and is a luxury player that can be switched when needed. With Wanganeen there, it was good to see him playing the ball.

Wanganeen – Couldn’t find the thing in the first half. Moved like baby Cyril, but just failed to have impact. Once the pressure eased, he stood up and started to show great signs. Front and centre, pressure acts and decent speed…just what you want to see. Could have easily stayed missing, but proved that he has what it takes. Would relish AFL level, as Buddy and Cyril would make it soooo easy for him.

Milne – Yeah, just was there or thereabouts. Nothing to write home about. Took a few grabs, worked hard forward and back. I’d like to watch more of him.

Morton – Stated off poorly. Poor decisions that cost us goals, but then worked his way into the game with some tough hits and good pressure acts. Kicks the ball well, is a monster body. Doubt he’ll play again, but he’s an option

Grimley – A massive lad, but runs the wrong way every time. Was one of the cleanest players. No mud on him. Once the last quarter game, he got some cheapies and had his hand in assisting a few goals. Didn’t take a contested mark (One on One/Pack). Didn’t win a hitout either, but should be persisted with.

Slattery– Another who was absent. Got better in the last, but I would have liked to see more run and carry off the HBF. Seemed to shirk contests in favour of sitting back and waiting for a cheapie. Needs more time and more gym work.

Ladson – Class act. Was absent early, but dominated in the second with so many tough/hard one percenters that I didn’t think he had in him. His field kicking was first class and should be first in line.

Lisle – My favourite. Was very vocal in directing everyone. A few games in the senior side and his confidence is sky high. Busted packs, had no worry about his broken face. Disposal around the ground was first rate, but I would have liked him to take more contested marks. Should have had a few more goals, but passed them off or missed them. Will walk back into the side next week.

Bruce – Hardly got stats, but probably had 15 tackles. Seemed to want to get a more physical feeling as opposed to getting cheapies of HBF. Did get those cheap disposals in the last, but I was impressed with his game after such a long layoff.

Box Hill Reserves

I watched the last 3 quarters of the match, with the ressies just having a field day. Much bigger bodies, so much class. About 7-8 could easily fit into the ones if needed.

Schoenmakers – Took some decent grabs early and pressured hard when the ball was up forward. Was rested after HT I hope :(

Menagola – Has a decent size about him, took some great grabs but drifted out of the game too easily. Didn’t help he was benched often, but I was impressed with what he as.

Langford – Another of those medium sized players who didn’t really have much of an impact. Kicked a late goal and got more of it as the game was over. Will be better for the slog, but will stay in the seconds.

Mahony – Loved the silk of the kid. Got lots of it off the HBF, and did lots with it when he had it. Butchered a few, but I would love to see him play higher up.

Best of the non Hawk players:

Aaron Johns – Everywhere. Would be suited to the ones.

Tim Northe – Another who did what he wanted forward or back. Very Vocal. Teammates love him

Van Unen, Monkhorst, Allen also prominent.

Well today was a welcome change to what we've been used to at Box Hill. The weather was not as cold and sun was out but you wouldn't have known just by looking at the centre square which resembled more of a quagmire than part of a football ground. And for once this season BH played consistently four quarters, and when they were up, they put their opposition to the sword.

I thought they improved their stoppage situation this week. That makes a huge difference, as one, you are able to kick some easy goals and two, it stops the opposition from getting run-ons.

The uncontested transitional overlapping flying-V worked pretty well today. The pressure was good also, especially in the first quarter as BH put on a lot pressure and tackles.

Player Reports:

Every week I get more and more impressed by this guy. It's not just his ability to ruck but his work around the ground makes him effectively another midfielder who can takes contested marks. His also good around ground level and kicked a couple of nice goals. They say ruckmen take a while to develop, so I guess that Pattison at 25 has arrived. There's a few clubs in the AFL looking for a ruckmen. He would be on their radar. Thought he was BOG today.

Second best today was another 25 year old. Next fixture Gibson will play his 100th VFL game but again today showed why he's the captain and the leader of the club. Had to change his jumper at half time because you could not see from the mud he had accumulated. Came on as no.85 in the second, I thought who the **** is 85 only to realise it was Gibbo. His second jumper never made to the last quarter as it became covered completely in mud for the second time. It just showed how hard he goes in and under, and it's easy to think he's not that kind of player when he gets so many classy possessions on the outside. I really hope he's playing for Hawthorn next season, I'd hate to see another Curnow leave the ranks.

Last week I was impressed by Boumann saying he had proved me wrong. This week he was in the best three again. Apart from a couple of brain fades which he is prone two, he did a very good job Setanta today. Took contested marks, opposition marks and did a lot of good spoiling. Setanta had a dog of a day but Boumann was probably the reason why.

Most of Wanganeen's good work came in the SH. Still he kicked some timely goals in that period when the Bullants looked to maybe get a run-on. Not trying to play up his stocks by saying he reminds me a lot like Stephen Milne from St Kilda. His not really like Rioli as he doesn't necessiraly put a lot pressure on but he's very smart front and square and when he has the ball in congestion has the ability to make even the most nimble defenders look foolish. His goals came purely from forward nous, agility and speed. He also knows how to snap them as he did today and you're usually confident he will slot them through set shot, on the run or snapping.

Mirra played on Saad today and I don't think the Bullants leading goalscorer kicked a goal today. Looking like Mirra is getting his agility back after coming back from an injury but you could see they tried not kicking to where Mirra was. BH dominated the game and the ball hardly went into defence but it was still a job well done.

Bruce first game back from a long injury meant he might of always struggled to run out the game. But in the first 10-15 mins he really set the tone for the game were he had 4-5 tackles. Inspiring stuff. Unfortunately after that he was beaten by Brock McLean in the second and third quarters. And while he generated a bit of run today a lot of his kicks were clangers which went straight to opposition. For first game back was pretty good.

Jackson played a pretty good game today. Played mainly midfield and won a couple clearances and a fair few contested possessions. He really competed well today winning a fair few crucial contests. Ball use was good today especially by foot. Kicked a nice goal as well.

Milne doesn't necessarily win a lot of contested football for a few reasons. His not really the in and under type player and he doesn't use his height to his advantage in aerial contests. The other reasons is that his very agile and when he gets the ball his very hard to tackle and he can usually evade his opponent. Today he won a few clearances and his ball use was pretty good. I just think he needs to work more on the contest if he wants to be elevated.

Neil probably played his best game for BH this season. Played forward in the first quarter and second and then went down back to his usual role in the second half. He seemed to enjoy playing up forward and his usual turnovers were not prevalent with good ball use up forward. He even competed well with pressure and tackles in the forward half.

Schneider didn't really get a lot of the ball today but he was consistent all game, laying tackles and get a few clearances. Kicked a nice goal and used the ball pretty well most times. I thought he was pretty good today.

Dureya has found his little niche as half-back flanker. Shows a lot composure down back and makes good decisions with and without the ball. Today was no different and a pretty good game.

He did get a fair bit of the ball and got better as the game went on but I do expect more from Young. In the first half he hardly touched and when he finally did get it he used it poorly. Having said that he ran all day and his opponent just gave up in chasing him. He also just runs forward of the contest all the time but hardly ever ran as hard back. His main weapon is not his weapon anymore and until he gets that back he doesn't really offer much else, even at this level.

Ladson was okay today but didn't get a lot of it. When he did get it used it well but just too few possessions. Had a few tackles and when in really hard in a few contests but that's about it.

Sirra had an improved game over the last couple. Took some good marks and won a few contests. Not a bad game.

Andrews had two good quarters, first and last. His second and third went missing. Put a few tackles on, usually used it well but just didn't win a lot of it. Was okay.

Morton had a spotty day. Was good in patches and then bad in others. When he played well used it well, gained a few meters with kicking and run. When he was poor he turned it over, didn't defend well losing his opponent getting the better of him and kicking goals.

Grimely I thought this week his rucking improved but his work around the ground went backwards. Seemed slow today - his decisions in reading the play and running to the right spots was poor. Still it's only his third game. He showed he can run in one instance when he rucked from defence and then got an assist in the forward line in the same piece of play. Was okay up forward with a 2-3 assists.

Gilchrist played wing and forward today. Kicked the goal of the day when he kicked one on the boundary on the run. Didn't win a lot of the ball but when he went near it was very good.

Lisle played in defence in the first half and did it easy. Didn't have any problems and made easy work of his opponent and used it quite well. He then played forward in the SH were he kicked a couple of nice goals including a very good snap. Presented well and I am baffled when I hear people say his slow. Lisle is quick and not just for a big man.

Kiel was a little quiet today. Used it pretty well but nothing outstanding today.

Pollard also another defender that did well today but this was symptomatic of the ball not really coming in dangerously.

Williams I think he played on Lambert most of the day. Most of his possessions cam in the second half when the game was effectively over. Got to very few contests, was easily beaten by his opponent and he kept lagging behind. Another poor effort today.

Litherland came on as substitute I think in the SH as I did not see him the FH. First game back in a couple of months on the sidelines. Didn't really do a lot but his kicking was the highlight of his game, exceptional. Presented well up forward and he just needs more game time now.

Hard the previlge to witness two of the finest goalkickers ever to set foot on City Oval today.

Was a shoot-out between reining champion (in his eyes anyway) HalfBack Dasher matched up to Windy Hill's favorite son in Echols.

And add in next week is a bye for both BH teams. Looks like they don't want anyone missing too many matches.

Shoey played the first half in the Development squad. Looked like a planned thing. Obviously a class above that level, bigger and stronger. Had a good run when he was on, got plenty of the ball.

The DS never gave their opposition a chance. After only fifteen minutes into the first quarter, the score was already five goals, three behinds to zero.

For the Seniors;
Wanganeen – must be putting himself on AFL selectors' radars. Great instincts around goal. You can see his eyes light up when the ball spills off a contest giving him the perfect opportunity for a crumbing goal.

Lisle - I think BH has been missing Lisle as the big marking target up forward. Really crashes the packs. Unfortunately for BH he’ll probably go straight back into the Hawthorn side.

The footy record had an update on Beau Muston’s ankle reconstruction. It was hoped he’d be back playing, but recovery is taking time. He has been jogging & running but there is a lack of mobility, meaning Muston can’t step up his training. A long term approach is being taken, and it’s unlikely he’ll play again this year.

Great job guys I wont go through everyone i just have a few things to add or comment on.

Box Hill boys of note

Boumann – Was pretty good i though today he is playing some consistent footy for us this year.

Mirra - What can you say held the bullants leading goal kicker who has kicked 35 goals + this season. Took some good marks and provided run of the HBL. One of the best on the ground for mine. I would think he is a strong chance to be on an AFL list next year. Who knows but i hope its Hawthorn.

Pattison – Played well in the ruck and took some great marks around the ground up in attack and down in defence. I thought he played his best game for box hill today (that i've seen anyways)

Neal - I though he was great today straight at kind of player provided dash and chose the right options.

The Hawthorn Boys:

Sierakowski It was good to see siera playing of the half back flank again. He can set up with his run and left boot. Really looked at home and performed as such. I think wing is not his position and being down back really suits him. A much needed return to form from the young man.

Duryea – Has been great since his move back to defence. Is really providing some drive from the back really improving each weeks.

Young - i know others have mentioned him but i thought he got quite a lot of the ball he kicked a goal and provided run and carry in fact i had him in he best until he got injured and we looked like we missed him for a bit until we adjusted. Yes he made a couple of errors but that did not detract from the impact he was having on he game. Hope his leg injury isn't too serious.

Schneider – Standard game from the boy made a couple of errors but coming along nicely

Wanganeen – Took his opportunities today and kicked a great snap. Provided some forward pressure needs to build on his fitness and he will be more than serviceable.

Milne – He along with lisle since they have had a taste of senior footy have really started blossom for box hill. He had a good game today was in close. He took some nice grabs and made some good interceptions and farmed the ball out in congested situations. Milne has really turned it around IMO was going through the motions early in season.

Morton – Best game Morton has played since coming back from injury still drops a few but gaining in confidence and played the game out well. I think he can be useful going forward.

Ladson – Played a real leaders game out there today. Was really audible at the quarter time and 3 qtr time huddles providing insight and encouragement to his fellow players. He was good in the clinches and drifted forward to kick some goals. He was one of the better players on the ground.

Lisle – Great game in his come back still has a bit of swelling on his cheek but never shirked the contest played down back and was then shifted forward with great effect. Good game by the big fella.

Bruce – Got the ball but burned quite a few times needs more time.

Reserves

Only saw the last half but langford was fairly prominent especially in the last quarter even kicked a goal drifting down from defence. He looks all class.

I heard that Schoey played the first half and pulled up well. Unfortunately Box Hill have the bye next week and it will be interesting to see what happens with schoey.

I was down by the jumping castle for 3/4s of the game with my children. I finally managed to persuade them (thanks to a hot chocolate and a babycino) to move to the terraces for the last quarter.

We were probably about 5 metres away from Lowden, Strats, et al on the terraces, Echols, if that orientates you. Yourself?

Wow, there are some conflicting match reports this week.

Gee, you're not wrong...

Thought Bruce looked a man amongst boys today.

If he's not the next selection out of today's match, then I give up. Class above. 12 weeks out of the game and left Young and Ladson behind.

Monty to be the sub come preliminary final time. Perfect role for him.

Thought we saw a few players take steps fwd yesterday.....in no order..
Grimley....not sure what the people were watching who were dissapointed by him yesterday....remember , he was a basket baller who has turned his hand to footy...
Duryea...was tipped into him by a good judge and have been waiting to see what he saw..........am starting to see it.
Lisle.....first game back yesterday and let me down in his attack on the footy early.....just once , after that , showed he is ready to become a first 22 player.
Wanganeen......this kid has the tools when given a chance at the top level to excell.......has a skill set very similer to Milne (tip rat).Am very excited by this kid . Another yr to build fitness and in the side for me....:thumbsu:
Milne....must get a game soon too keep him focused , hungry .......

Wanganeen is a Rioli clone. I reckon the AFL would see him step it up another level.

Geez it is exciting watching him.

That would be hard to take. :thumbsu:

Thanks for the reports everyone. Read them first thing every Monday morning. Would love to see some recent footage of Wanganeen.

I went to Boh Hill on Saturday and saw the second half of the Development Squad game. I was particularly interested in how Menegola went and I must say I was impressed with what I saw.

Although he did not get "a million touches" he did get quite a few and he was impressive with all but one....which was an OOB on the full with a muddy and greasy ball which he tried to poke down the line but missed by a metre or so.

The conditions were too difficult to get a good impression of his speed across the grass but he has endurance aplenty. He can take a decent one grab mark overhead, stands up in the tackle, does not panic and can deliver the footy by hand and foot with precision. What was really impressive to me was his decision making, choosing the right options.

He reminded me of someone and I could not place who that was. I saw the last half of the Freo/Eagles game last evening and the penny dropped. There is a resemblance IMO to Le Cras. Not saying he is as good or will be as good as Le Cras but there is a likeness to the way they both go about it in the ground. Menegola is 189cms whilst Le Cras is 183cms. They can both run all day, one grab marks O/H, good and accurate by foot and hand, and both seem to understand the game.

Anyway I will watch with interest, especially if Menegola is able to do another pre-season and not be crueled by injury as he was this year.

I reckon he could be the roughest diamond out of last years drafts. Hope I am proven right. Enjoyed this update thanks N24. I have family in WA and one of them reckons he could be a real gem. The last bloke he said that about was Fyfe.....

A lovely day. Not a breath of wind and a beautiful autumnal sun lit the arena. The wave of disappointment, that swept the ground when it was announced that PJ was not playing, was palpable. We flogged them due to fantastic run and spread from deep in defence. They did it for PJ.

Early on they killed us at the centre clearances. This was mainly due to Brock Mclean. Bruce went on to him and quelled his influence. I don’t rate either but it showed that Bruce can play a lock down role on a clearance player. There has been talk about list cloggers, Brock Mclean is the prototype.

Moose Lisle was great at either end. It lifts a player when they get exposure to the higher grade. His wide running to create spread was considerably better. His confidence is up so I hope we rush him back into the ones.

Patto is such an honest player. Contests everything and has great hands. Sure he is undersized but I hope we rookie him. Obviously he will have to develop a chronic injury to fulfil the current rookie ruckman brief.

Laddo plays footy with great enthusiasm. He has lost a yard but full credit to him. Terrific leadership.

Duryea is an interesting one. One on one he is very good and his kicking is AFL standard. My only knock on him is his size and speed. He may develop into a Guerra type. MAY.

Milne played on ball and got a lot of the footy in close. He needs to get more damaging with the footy.

Youngy ran the game out well enough. Just does not influence the game as much as he should/could.

I saw the last Q of the development game.

Langers ran the game out well. At one stage he touched the ball on the HBF, ball whips forward to our goal and who receives the handball - Langers. There is a touch of Jedi about him.

Mahoney played in defence. He is a thick set unit. Dunno.

Menegola talks to himself when he gets subbed. Seemed fairly frustrated, voices can do that to you.
