Football club to announce three-year Bendigo deal
Wednesday, 24 September 2003

FORMER Essendon premiership player Paul Barnard is expected to be named the new general manager of the Bendigo Bank Bombers on Friday.
It's also anticipated the Essendon Football Club will announce a three-year commitment to the Bendigo Bombers at Friday's press conference.
It's believed Barnard, who retired after Essendon was bundled out of the AFL finals race by Port Adelaide less than a fortnight ago, was one of the final two candidates in contention for the general manager position.
The announcements on the general manager position and Essendon's commitment to the Bombers will be made by Essendon chief executive officer Peter Jackson at the Shamrock Hotel.
Barnard, a member of Essendon's 2000 premiership team, is known to have accepted a football administration role that's not at AFL level.
The general manager will focus on marketing, sponsorship and developing a volunteer base for the club.
The Bombers and Essendon recently met to discuss the future of the VFL club, which was formed last year following the Bendigo Diggers second winless season in as many years.
However, before any new deal between the two clubs could be signed off on, Football Victoria had to be consulted.
It's believed a meeting between the two clubs and Football Victoria was held yesterday and the immediate future of the club has now been signed off on.
Outgoing Bendigo Bombers' chairman Geoff Bowyer told the Advertiser on August 28 the club would propose a three-year alignment commitment be adopted by Essendon.
The Advertiser believes the Bombers have been granted their request.
The All Seasons Bendigo Football is strongly supporting the Bombers' attempts to garner a three-year commitment from Essendon.
BFL chairman Mark Johnston said the alignment between Essendon and the former Bendigo Diggers had medium and long-term benefits to football in the Bendigo region.
"It's going to push quality players into the region, it will retain quality players and gives the region a different footy profile," Johnston said yesterday.
"We think for the future of Bendigo-region football, the alignment is vital."The league would not back down on its support of the Bombers if the club was to introduce a VFL reserves team.
"We know there would probably be a little trepidation from BFL clubs about a reserves side, however we see that as one of those short-term obstacles we would have to work through," Johnston said.
"In view of the reserves, we think it's really important the alignment between the Bendigo Bombers and Bendigo Pioneers is as strong as it can possibly be because that's potentially where a number of the reserves players would come from."

Good to see Essendon commiting to giving the Bendigo Bombers a few more seasons. And also good to see Barney stay connected to the club in the admin role that he mentioned about on After the Game Saturday night.

Good for bendigo but if you were a essendon listed player travelling back and forth would be a pain in the arse. It will be interesting to see what happens in three years

A premiership or two, plus an increase in membership from the Bendigo region. Good result all around.

I think its good news.

Hopefully Bendigo can make the Finals in the VFL in 2004.

They were not far off this year.
