Massive news and a great long term pick up for GWS.

THE AFL's eighteenth team, Greater Western Sydney, has got its first AFL player - young Crow Phil Davis.
Davis, who is out for the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder in April - this morning told the Crows playing group he intends to accept an offer to join the Giants in 2012.
“To lose another centre half-back after the loss to Gold Coast of Nathan Bock last year is certainly not ideal. I can ensure all our members and supporters that we did everything in our powers to get Phil to stay, including putting forward an offer well in excess of any offer to an 18 game player in the club’s history.”
The AFL will later work out compensation in the form of a draft pick for the raid on Davis.
Davis, 21 later this month, was drafted with pick 10 in the 2008 national draft. He made his AFL debut in 2010 and has played 18 games. Link

Has a lot of potential and given that until the age of 15 he grew up in the ACT so in someways is a bit of a homecoming as he has family both in Sydney and Canberra.
Well that clears up one of my main concerns - I was hoping for us to pick up a CHB, and while Carlile was who I was expecting Davis is definitely a pretty nice choice. :thumbsu:
Edit: Looks like we're not getting Walker though.

I'm confused. You say, I was hoping for us to pick up....., but your little picture says that you barrack for the Lions?
I hope he's been as good for you as Bock has been for us. It's about that time of year when we'll start seeing these guys sign!

Forgot to sign in to his alias....:D
Great signing by GWS. Perfect fit. 20yo who will be a staple of the side for the next 10 years minimum.
I dunno how much class GWS are going to be able to attract in the middle (Scully would be a great start of course), but they've started the signing as well as they could have hoped IMO.
Saw him play on Buddy a few weeks ago and he showed how much talent he has.

Many GWS fans are still adapting to the two-team lifestyle and all the grammar traps that go with it :)

The small text under it lists GWS. :) Foundation member and local of GWS and been on this board since Day 1, so not too confusing for regulars. I use "we" on both GWS and Lions boards, and specify on other boards.
Great get, future captain material.
Sign anybody you can from other clubs, just stay away from Sam Reid next year!
You can take Jesse White though:thumbsu:

Great signing for you guys. I Actually think you will be around 13th on the ladder next year
Great pickup if he remains fit. Will be interesting to see if they pickup any more strong talls forward and back.

I can't understand why everyone is applauding this guys courage. In reality, his injury has meant he has played his last game for the club and all this has basically done is get him annual leave from now until the start of his gws contract as Adelaide will tell him he is no longer wanted at the club. No courage involved here. Just a young bloke ensuring he doesn't have to go to rehab at the club every day until the end of the year for no reason!

Any details of the contract? Can't imagine he was offered Scully, Ward or even Palmer style money? 200K-300K perhaps? After all, he wouldn't be earning very much at all at Adelaide, and wouldn't earn very much in his next contract either

hahahaha we offered him more than 300!
You are apparently shelling out $700kish.

They have said $800,000 - but surely that is over 3 Years or similar.
No way would he be on close to a Mil a year.
The word around Adelaide is 800k a year for three years. I imagine there's a getout clause in case his shoulders don't hold up. He's twenty and has now had two ops.
Crows have lost their preferred CHB two years in a row. Most of us are gutted.

Seems like you're wrong. 800K over 3 years is around 266K. Right in the 200K-300K range

I think you guys are gonna be surprised at the quality of player you've picked up here once he's played a few games next year.
Already one of the most composed, skilful, smart, courageous big men in the league.

Davis will be a very very good signing for GWS. It's rare to see young KPP's with poise and time with the ball at such a young age. I'll be interested to see the other signings in a direct comparison to what the Gold Coast did.
A nice start indeed GWS.

His contract will be well over 800k for 3 years. Closer to the 800k per year some have mentioned. We probably won't know for a while though, as he can't sign until after the season. Where'd you get 800 for 3 years from?
There is no way in hell Adelaide wouldn't have matched 266k a year. I'd hope and expect Carlton (and others) would have offered more than that if he was available. He'll be a star if his body holds up

Adelaide offered him a significant pay rise, larger than what we have ever offered, a player at such a young age, yet we were still not "in the same ball park" as whatever offer The Giants made him. I believe 800k a year wouldn't be correct, probably around the 500k-700k mark.
AFAIK the $800k a year came from one of the Crows' players on Twitter, so I agree with those who wouldn't bank on that figure being 100% correct. However it'd definitely be over the $500k a year mark.

All the articles point today to 750-800k PER YEAR.
Crazy money, surely they are struggling to pull more talent then?
GiantForce
3 Aug 2011, 16:48
If the 700-800K rumors are true...we might indeed be struggling a little to sign talent like the Suns.....I guess the idea of living on the Gold Coast rather than Western Sydney is a little more appealing...

Or, maybe they figure that KPP's are harder to find than mids. You only have to look at Gold Coast, plenty of little running types, not many big bodies. Maybe they are happy to pay a premium for the bigger fellas.
Geez, if this is the whinging that happens when 1 player signs to a new club, wait until Free Agency comes in!

No (fan of 10+ years).......but if I was, it's great to see people like you encouraging new fans to our great game
However I doubt the figues are as high as 800K, media always pushes by a few hundred K a little so they can play the "They shouldn't be offering this amount of money to a kid" card. Could well be more a 600-700K figure judging by todays reports
However my initial thoughts pretty nuch seem to be very wrong. Thought Adelaide would find it hard to justify someone who's had a few injuries and limited game time a lot of $$$, so would have thought around 300K would have been enough to secure him.

300k should be more than enough money to secure a 20 year old who has played 18 games. Unless he is being offered 750k a year over 5 years then it makes it a tad hard;)

Appears that he could re-sign with Adelaide tomorrow and there would ne no repercussions (Acording to Giants CEO Dale Holmes on 3AW). He announced his intentions to join the Giants (So probaley a handshake agreement between Davis' management and the Giants). No contract has been signed yet. So Giants have done no wrong it seems.

Davis is a potential top player to build a defence around, obviously GWS will need a few more experienced players in the backline as well. Slight question marks for mine are 1. lack of speed and 2. dodgy shoulders.

$3mil over 5 years being reported by a few articles I've just read. So about 600K a year for Davis

Which sounds reasonable to pluck a potentially 10 year CHB for GWS whilst you've the extra money to build your lists.
People seem to be under the impression that GWS will massively inflate the contracts for players, which simply isn't the case. They will be inflated contracts but not to the level at which the garbage journos would be reporting.
I'm not particularly sure why it is, but GWS has aroused my curiosity moreso than the Suns.
word from schoolmates is that he's signed a heads of agreement with gws for roughly 700,000 annually.
he's certainly cleared his locker from adelaide.
it must be remembered that like every other club, gws have to spend a minimum of their salary cap that will be larger than other clubs initially.

I can assure you Davis is going to be a very very good player. You dont pay that money to an 18 game player otherwise. It is why us Adelaide supporters are totally devastated. We actually picked him to be a possible forward aswell. His only question mark is his shoulders. Dont worry about his pace, he is one of those blokes who looks like he has plenty of time every time he touches the ball, never rushed.... He is also ultra smart

have no problem with the way you guys are going about your business, very shrewd... however gubby allen has to be the most pretentious, cocky, condescending f-wit to step out in front of the media. Giving your club a bad look in my opinion
Allen is my biggest concern about GWS. As someone who follows the Lions as well, it was devastating to see the shape he left us in after almost a decade where he was in charge of drafting, trading and contracts. The players who came through the '01 to '07 drafts (before we promoted Hadley to take over) are largely non-existent. He was a co-architect of the Crazy Vossy trade period, including the Fev trade. He repeatedly paid players ridiculous contracts for their playing ability and achievements, and backended contracts resulting in us paying near the salary cap in years where we were at the bottom of the ladder. He really seems to have no negotiation skills and no concept of planning for the future further than next year.
Last year was the first year that we were really managing to right the ship and hopefully we're trending up now. But if he pulls the same shit at GWS, it'll be easy to see how he could destroy a new club if given the same free reign he had at Brisbane - so I'm fervently hoping they have not given him that same free reign, that they've learnt from our mistakes.
As a Crows fan living in Sydney, I was thinking about supporting GWS as my second team.
But I am so devastated about Davis defecting, I don't think I can support GWS now :(
Already was successfully defending the best forwards in the game as a 10-gamer, will be one of the very best key position players in the league shoulders permitting.

I am in the same boat - but as I really like phil as a player and as a person - I'll be following him at GWS and definitely supporting the Giants as my second team.
Who can really blame him for leaving? If I was in his position I would have done the same thing.
He treated the Crows with utmost respect and showed his integrity as a person. That deserves my continued support for him.

Wait until your club loses 2 CHBs in 2 years of the calibre of Bock and Davis and get back to us on the whinging. ;) Actually think there's been minimal whinging considering what our club has lost here with minimal to no recourse.

At least when free agency comes in we'll have the chance to steal someone else off another club to fill the gap. At the moment we just lose 2 gun CHBs in 2 years for crappy compensation.

You're a dead set idiot.
1. You've got no eye for talent if you don't know who Davis is
2. Do you expect "western sydneysiders" to know who he is? Has it occured to you that that may just be the reason AFL is expanding there?
Hell, "who" would be the response from a very large chunk of AFL followers. And a lot of the rest would only be able to tell him from a stick of butter because he's not as yellow.

That's a fair point, given that he's only played around 18 games. But therein lies the angst felt by Adelaide supporters. A first round draft pick who has had major injury issues, yet was fully supported and financed in his rehabilitation by the Crows, who expected he would become their long term CHB.
But...we can't really complain as we were signatories to the concessions granted GC and GWS, just as all the other existing clubs were.
We were just stiff to lose two Centre Half Backs in two years.:(
