Reckon I've figured out what we've been missing the last couple of years...

The enforcer-type... Wally, Barney (at their best)...
Look at the Lions...Brown, Lynch (steriod freak), Michael, Pike...
All players who make the opposition think twice before committing to a contest...by the time the guy has thought "i better grab the ball now", the enforcer has brushed/bumped him aside and banged the ball down the ground.

Currently at Essendon, who can fill this role?
Solly? not big enuff...
JJ/MJ? Ditto... all tough players, and can hurt the other team, but can't intimidate like the really big guys...
Can we take a fringe player from another club and turn him into this sort of player? Think what Syd-en-y has done for Barry Hall... close to the dumbest player i've ever seen when he was at the Saints (not the ideal breeding ground to be sure), but given more guidance at the Swans, has turned into a good contributer week in week out...

Is there anyone like this on our list? Who?
Is there anyone we can turn out like Barry? Who?

Ideas people....?

Solly is big enough...188cms and 96kgs.

**** being an enforcer you just need to be hard at the ball thats why i am ****ed off to here essendon are shopping around solly. Why??? we need these physical players like brisbane have to be successful.

We have no enforcer coming through the two's although Courtney Johns already has defenders getting out of his way and when your 192cms and 100kgs its no wonder

If Courtney Johns isn't given a spot on the senior list next season I will be extremely piszed!

As for Solly, I'd hate to lose him, but it might be the price we pay to get ourselves that midfield jet we need so badly.

i think if we lose solly to get a 'jet', then we will be back to square one. i don't think it would improve us overall.

oh and robert shaw said on bomber radio after the port game that johns would definitely be promoted to the senior list next year

We really need Solly if we want to match it physically with the Lions (who are obviously the benchmark). Especially seeing we'll be running a lot of light bodies through the team next year, what with Reynolds, Winderlich, even Bullen (unless he goes all Cousins over the summer).

A big tough ruckman would also be handy to back up Hille. Keating/Gardiner/Primus have shown how valuable they are.

Look at the majority of Premiership teams over the years, they have all had that bit of prick bastard in them, you must not go into a game without them, 2-3 normally do the trick. Said it for years, so obvious.

Windy, thats exactly my point...

No matter how tough ur JJ's, MJ's Solly's (if he stays) are, they are no match for the BIG bastard who the opposition KNOW will come out swinging if things get willing...
Watched the 2000 GF last week (just for the sake of it), and Wally WAS that guy...threw a few punches, laid some hard tackles, one or two big bumps...thats all it takes to get the other team second guessing...
My question is, who on our current list is capable of that? Or, who can we get that is capable of that?

Physically, Lloydy is more than capable, but he's not that type of player... Not saying he is weak, soft (see Collingwood), i just reckon that he isn't mean enuff...

Maybe Bullen can find out what steroids Cousins managed to get his hands on in 99...

Umps watch Lloyd too closely...yes he's a tank, but he's got a different role.

I'd love to see Courtney Johns busting up backlines. He seems to have a similar physique to Jonathan Brown...imagine the possibilities
