View Full Version : What do you hope our team will look like Round 1 next year?

Round 1, 2012 is fast approaching. If we could get every player you want (and realistically think we have a chance of getting) in a Giants jumper for Round 1 next year, what would you like our team to look like?

Personally, I don't really know enough about the uncontracted players currently available and how the whole draft system works to be able to make much useful input. But of the current players in the NEAFL this year, I think Josh Bruce, Jeremy Cameron, Steve Clifton, Jonathan Giles, Curtly Hampton, Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar and Gerard Ugle have impressed me this year. And of course Izzy.

The only name I really know of those getting thrown around are the Cornes brothers and Dale Thomas, and would love to have any or all of them in our side. I know we've signed Phil Davis so hopefully we can build a strong defence around him.

I think you can expect a few NT boys given GWS has the zone and Sheedy's history with the Tiwi Islands.

I especially expect Ross Tungatalum to be playing AFL next year. He carved it up in the foxtel cup and the NEAFL this year. He's got flair and would put bums on seats too.

Tapp and Palipuaminni might also be worth a look.

Scully, Clark, Palmer, Carlile, Davis have been the 5 names thrown around (Ward seems likely to re-sign at the Bulldogs). It's suggested that we've got 5 for this year and next year we will get a few more than that.

Players competing for a regular spot next year with (includes those 5 players + Coniglio, Patton, Wingard, who will be Top 3 picks at this years draft. Does not include the NT kids plus the other 6 selections in the Top 15 of the draft + the expirenced AFL players we get via trading with the 4 17yr olds like O'Meara):
B: Aylett, Carlile, Wilson
HB: Hombsch, Davis, Ugle
C: Treloar, Shiel, Palmer
HB: Patton, Cameron, Hampton
F: Wingard, Folau, Reid
Foll: Clark, Scully, Coniglio
I/C: Bruce, Golds, Giles, Miles, Carey, Cooyou, Clifton, Phillips, Flagg, Townsend, Darley, Bugg

Sure I missed a few aswell. Much better talent pre-draft than GC pre draft easily. Shiel/Treloar Top 5 picks and Cameron/Hampton/Hombsch top 10 in this years draft IMO

I think the 5 names locked in are Clark, Palmer, Ward, Carlile and Davis. From what I know Scully hasn't decided yet and more likely to stay with dees, specially because of his family and close ties with lots of mates from demons.

I think you guys should add Jordan Russell from Carlton Blues for your list. He is out of blues and rumor is he already agreed to join GWS.I think at the end the 5 names we going hear at the end of the season going to be lot different than the names we hearing right now.

No one knew Phil Davis joining gws till few weeks ago, because everyone missed his name on paper.

The 200cm Clark had been touted a potential recruit for the new team coming into the competition, Greater Western Sydney, but his WA-based manager Colin Young was adamant this week that Clark wouldn't be going there.

"Mitchell Clark will not be going to Greater Western Sydney," Young said. "Should Mitchell decide that Brisbane is not for him going forward, then I'm fairly sure that there's quite a few clubs that will make the call."

Don't mean to be negative but with Clark now ruled out and the mail that ward is staying with the dogs the list of recruits looks very thin to me.

There was an article on SNF that we've got 5 players. Scully, Carlile, Palmer, _____, ______ + the guys we get from trading. It's not that bad

You are dreaming about Scully, Melbourne have given him there best offer and he still hasn't signed, and close ties to mates give me a break people change jobs every day of the week and they still keep there mates.I have no inside mail ( unlike others who always claim they do) yet I will be stunned if all of the grief he has gone through and put Melbourne through this year if after the season he says I'm staying, if I was a Melbourne supporter and he resigned now I would be pissed, when if he is staying this could of been put to bed weeks or even months ago.

On a related note, wouldn't mind having a punt on you guys playing Essendon in Round 1 next year. Sheedy v his old club, surely the AFL can't look past that!

Suns verse Giants, round 1!

The SNF article is simply portraying the media assumptions of who has gone, apart from Davis of course.

I wouldn't be sure about Carlile making his way to GWS, you aren't his first preference unfortunately.

Most likely Giants V Essendon will be our first game. Not sure where though....maybe ANZ Stadium?

At this it looks like we have these players joining GWS:

* Phil Davis (Adelaide)
* Callan Ward (Western Bulldogs)
* Rhys Palmer (Fremantle)
* Tom Scully (Melbourne)

In my oppinion other players that we will probably get are:

* Ricky Dyson (Essendon)
*Danyle Pearce (Port Adelaid)
* Dylan Addison (Western Bulldogs)
*Xavier Ellis

I believe Brendon Goddard could potentially the GWS marquee player.

Realistically I think we need an experienced Key Defender and another forward too. Who else is likely to come to GWS?

After the Giants attempts on Collingwood players, I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Dawes was their target all along. Drive up the price on Tomas, Pendlebury & Swan so they can't afford to pay Dawes what he deserves.
Dawes would definitely be a solid KPF for the Giants

I really hope it isn't him but your logic does make sense but GWS did approach Thomas. Collingwood should have enough to keep him though.

At this stage it's looking like we might put together a pretty impressive midfield for our first season in the AFL (if all the rumours are true).

Chad Cornes, Luke Power, Tom Scully, Callan Ward, Rhys Palmer.

Throw in Phil Davis down back, Dean Brogan in the ruck, plus our NEAFL stars from this year and the X-factor in Folau up forward, and we are very close to being a highly competitive unit come next year. I think we need probably one more star midfielder at the top of their game, and one more good key defender and key forward to mentor our young guys coming through and provide that strong spine.

How would you compare those names to Ablett, Brennan, Harbrow, Krakouer, Fraser, Brown, Rischitelli and Bock?

I think its more drive up Daisy's price so they can get Pendlebury next year!!

GWS will get who they want. Goddard or Pendlebury or both, next year.

Ablett

Rischitelli
Bock Power
Ward
Scully
Brennan Davis
Harbrow Palmer
Brown*
Krakouer
Fraser

*Rated so low due do sitting out more than half the season

Obviously Ablett is Elite, and Rischitelli is pretty experienced, club B&F winning quality midfielder, so they're above what the Giants have picked up so far
Bock and Power are KPPlayers, and I reckon are as good as each other in their particular roles.
Sclully and Ward are emerging quality midfielders, plenty of talent and will be very good players with decent support..
Davis and Brennan are about level, Brennan is highly unpredictable but can be influential, and no-one is quite sure how good Davis will be - he has great potential, but missed a bit of footy recently due to injury.. Over the years he should develop into an excellent CHB, so I am probably underrating him here..
Harbrow and palmer, again qiute level.. can both be really handy on their day, but not known for their consistency.

Fraser and Krakouer have played a couple of good games between them, but honestly they probably shouldn't have been picked up. Brown got himself suspended and severley injured himself. But despite his physical presence hasn't proved to be an effective player for the Suns. Great at playing the man, not so much the ball.

Davis will be a top 3 CHB (or maybe FB depending on where he is played) within 4 years if he stays relatively injury free (possible long term shoulder issues may shortern his career), bookmark it. GWS got a extremely underrated pick up in him, cert for multiple AA honours over his career. I know these are wild calls to be making at the moment but the kid is a special player who just oozes talent, he will be irreplaceable for us and sorrily missed (despite what Crows supporters say about Talia). I will look forward to seeing him on a more regular basis (living in WS myself), although not in the circumstances I would have liked. GWS will probably be my second team but losing Davis to you guys has certainly given me some pause.

As a Lions supporter as well as a GWS supporter, I'd dispute your rankings.

Rischitelli won our B&F in a year where just about all other experienced players missed significant parts due to injury. He was good, got a lot more possessions than in previous years, but he was still a one trick pony in grabbing the ball, slamming it on to the boot and having the opposition mark it. Power also spent half the year looking very average and marked it with terrible disposal. It really was only the last six weeks where he looked a shadow of himself.

I'd rate them more as follows:

Ablett

Bock
Ward
Scully
Davis
Rischitelli
Brennan
Harbrow Palmer
Brown* Power
Krakouer
Fraser

Man now McDonald's been added to the list...

With new players going to the Giants every week I'm not going to speculate any further on what the best 22 will be til I'm sure they've got all ttheir players from other clubs for the season..

And then after that there'll be the draft..

Recruits so far.

Scully, Ward, Palmer, Davis, McDonald, Power, Brogan, C.Cornes

to come..

Jordan Russell, Ricky Dyson and Brendan Fevola..?

Do you think you will get any others..? Sheedy mentioned a surprise, i am thinking it was James McDonald.

But media keep suggesting a big name player that hasn't been mentioned as of yet..?

Surely O'meara will get another Band 1 player across the line..?

Pendlebury, Goddard and Hurley

He's no doubt been written off and will continue to be, but I'm not sure how many of his critics have seen him play.

I only saw him in the last H&A game this year. You can tell that the instinct of knowing where to be, when/where to lead, etc. clearly isn't there yet (can only come with more time on the ground) but his hand and foot skills have clearly developed in the past year, and his marking (especially on the lead) would probably suprise some. Wouldn't want to pick up the ball near him, either. He'll be good ;)
