we don't need players who are wililng to play for the club
he is a mercenary - nothing more nothing less - fine playing for the dollars - but at least be honest about it
and if next year I see one bulldog player shaking his hand I will "spew" (as wallace once said in a famous video)

It wasnt only his " a s s" ching, it was the way he played footy, there is NO-ONE that can replace him. I cant believe he would leave this club.
We still got Crofty and Murph.
Gorrrrr!
We've just come last, we've got all sorts of problems, and people are not upset by this? I don't understand at all.
He's one of our best players. Of course we need him. We need the club to be in a state where players like him don't even contemplate leaving.
But the decisions made so we have to move on. Let's get the best possible deal.

OK - let's be honest. What do we know? Nothing. He may be a mercenary. He may not be. He may crave team success. He may want a mdifield role Rohde wouldn't give him. He may just want a financially stable employer who doesn't ask him to take a pay cut after the trade period has ended.
I for one will not bag him unless something becomes public that justifies it. He's a great player who has given us pretty good service for quite a few years. He has some flaws, but not as many as alot of our list. I'd thank him for his performances for us because more often than not his contribution has added to my enjoyment of being at the football.
There's players on our list I would more readily classify as mercenaries. They take our money but don't deliver at all. Nathan Brown doesn't owe us anything. There's plenty on our list that couldn't say the same thing.

K9, very well put and I tend to agree with just about everything you say but...its the manner in which he has left which has not endeared himself to the supporters.
I was a huge Tony McGuinness fan but didn't feel he lets us down when he left and felt he was actually upfront and honest with his dealings and reasons for leaving. Wished him all the best.
If this is true that Nathan is leaving then he has been very economical with the truth so far and has treated the club and supporters poorly.
He has played a game and most here never really believed that his "my first option is to stay at the club" spiel was very genuine.
If he is leaving it to his manager to explain why whilst he trots off on a holiday then it poor refelection on the integrity of the man.
Like you I will wait until tomorrows reports before really judging him but the signs all point to the fact that he has left us.

k9, i think you are being most kind to nathan brown. i'm not sure he has always delivered on the field, and from what has been documented, he surely has not delivered off the field!
nathan brown has turned his back on the club which nutured him for 7 seasons ... loyalty, commitment, and passion count ... they are qualities people of good character, good nature, possess ... money, potential for success, alone should not drive an individual ... the hard road to prosperity is a more rewarding one than the easy road ...
this bloke has made a big decision ... one which may potentially severely damage an already fragile ship ... self-centred not selfless!
one can only recall back to 96 ... doggies finish 2nd last, bloke called grant finishes 2nd in the brownlow, is offered a truck load of money from port to move over ... he stays, doggies go within pts of making gf the next yr.
as far as i'm concerned, we at the wo, have many a player better than nathan brown ... AND it evidently seems, have many a person better than nathan brown!

Midfield role! Why wouldn't Rohde want to play him midfield at times?
Did Penny leave because he wanted to play first rover?
As for the second case. He wasn't the only affected by the pay cuts but the only one so far that wants to leave.
$ and thats all. Notice he is only interested in himself and would not have got anything out of Kretiuk's last game and lap.

Yep, thats what I hoped for
Its quite obvious he preferred listening to his old now unemployed football coach - Wallace

The general vibe that he sent out throughout the year was that his preference was to stay, and if the club paid him the money he wanted, he would. From what we understand the club hasn't, so he's leaving.
He hasn't made it a secret that money's very important to him and that he wants to milk every last cent out of his football career so that he doesn't have to work after he retires - if he is leaving for more money, how much more honest and upfront could he have been?

He said it wasn't about the money though.

He said other things had to be taken into account - never said that money wouldn't have anything to do with his decision.
If we had made the best offer, he would have stayed. (not saying that we should have)
The club wanted him to take more of a leadership role on and off the field, so if it was not about money, was he unwilling to do this?
Nathan himself has always said he is in football for the money so that he'll never have to work afterwards. He is quite open about this ambition.
Smorgon said he needs to learn about the real world.

Great player.
Unfortunately also a greedy mercenary and bulls**ter of the highest order.
I'm now very glad that I booed his last game for us against Brisbane.
He and his manager can both **** off !
Hopefully we get the better of a trade going forward.

I thought it after the last game and in retrospect was correct in thinking that he would never play in a doggies jumper again. His attitude and body language were a disgrace, didn't even try unless the ball was basically shoved down his throat. If him leaving was the reason I would have preferred to see a young bloke in the team who was keen and wanted to play run out - not some selfish rat make up the numbers. That sort of attitude really spits in the face of what the Club is trying to achieve and what the members expect from a team representing the Footscray Football Club. Talent wise we will be worse off for losing him, other aspects of the Club may be far better off; only time will tell.
I think the players need a more authoritarian presence who will not be afraid to give them a kick up the backside if things are going to improve for us. Brown is the exact opposite of that and would have had some sort of sway with the younger blokes. Perhaps him going will make them pull their weight a bit more?

Brown gave away his boots to someone in the crowd after the last game.
Whoever got them, I hope they send them back with a "stick them up your bum" letter attached.
Will be interesting to see if he "gives" more to his new club.

I guess one thing which is intersting is that he only really made an effort to get himself fitter and faster this year - remember the hooplah about how he was the new improved, hard training Nathan Brown.
Obviously the reason was he was gearing up to get big money on his next contract - whether from us or whoever.
The question is, why couldnt he have had that initiative in previous years?
I'm wondering how appealing he is going to be to other clubs, after all this negative publicity. Maybe another coach might transform him into a team player, much the same as the Swans have re-made Barry Hall. Or will it still be about me, me, me?
