View Full Version : Rhys Palmer walks out on Dockers
RISING Star Award winner Rhys Palmer is set to join GWS after walking out on Fremantle.
Palmer, 22, has told the Dockers he wants to seek better opportunities elsewhere.
He has played 54 games since making his debut in 2008 but has struggled with injury since his breakout first season was rewarded with the Rising Star Award.
Rumours have linked the left-footer to the Giants for weeks.
He is widely expected to be one of four young stars to join the new franchise, along with Callan Ward, Demon Tom Scully and Adelaide's Phil Davis.
Ward told the Dogs yesterday he was leaving for GWS (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/western-bulldogs-for-two-first-round-picks-as-callan-ward-leaves-for-gws/story-e6frf9jf-1226129573267).
“I can confirm that Rhys has advised Fremantle, through Brad Lloyd and Chris Bond that he does not want a new contract with the Dockers,” Palmer's manager Colin Young told website sportsnewsfirst.com.au.

Probably best for both parties involved if he left.
The West Australian newspaper:
“It was the hardest decision that I have ever had to make,” Palmer said.
“The relationship with my mates and the staff at Fremantle is very strong.
“However, the opportunity to play in the midfield that is being given to me at GWS is what I trained for all through my football career.”

If he gets a good run in the midfield he will be a very good pick up for us.

The man's a shankologist. I don't think he'd be in Freo's best 22.
The best game he played all year was a lockdown role on a soon-to-be-retiree who wasn't in the best of nick.

Fair enough. I guess that is the best way to go about it after the deal is done and dusted. However; I don't think I'll be as light-headed if Scully leaves us tbh. Or at least not that early in time. I'll be devastated! xD

Good Luck to him.
Would have struggled to make best 22 next year like he did this year, even with all our injuries.

Wouldn't blame you in the slightest - it'd be the equivilant of if we lost Fyfe... our board would explode! But like LN said, he's not in our Best 22 if we had a fully fit squad to pick from... or maybe even an injury list with less than 10 blokes on it (one can dream, right? :o )
What do you think you should get for him?
On an open market, he'd probably be a high-second rounder (or low first), especially in this year's weak draft.
But under the AFL's compo rules based on age, contract, on-field performance and draft position I'd realistically expect an end of first rounder. I guess the only question mark under those four categories is on-field performance, but he did win the Rising Star a couple of season ago after all...
We spent pick 7 on him. He wins the rising star then is cut down by an ACL in his 2nd year. Returns in his 3rd but with a limited preseason struggles to make the team eventually losing his spot in the finals.
In my mind thats the time GWS swooped. He completes a solid preseason and is played all over the ground except his best position in his 4th season. I think Harvey knew the outcome already and purposefully limited his opportunity.
Everytime he went back to WAFL he dominated. He gets heaps of the ball in the midfield when allowed to play there.
He'll be a decent pickup for you guys. Probably better than decent because he comes with something to prove. Ideally we'd get a band 2 compo because we spent an early first rounder on him. Fair compensation will probably be 3rd band, though i can see the AFL screwing us with band 4. Though the 4 year deal rumoured to be worth 2 mill should put us in band 2/3 territory. Age and being a first rounder himself should give him currency. Though his best and fairest finishes will be poor.

Palms plus Ward, your've got yourself two solid extractors there.
With a good pre-season, palms will start racking up the disposals with the odd clanger thrown in.

Fantastic pick up for you guys.
Has a huge tank, skills will get better as he wins more of the ball and builds confidence. He's a real hard working midfielder.
Remember Fremantle has a great history of plateauing if not lowering footballers ability.
Most who have left in the past will excel at other clubs..
Good luck Giants
Yeah, huge pick up..
Most Freo fans were hoping you had Rhys in the bag, that way we get over's for him.
Cheers.

Given the other possible players that we could of lost, I am relieved that it is palmer who is gone. Sits on the edge of our best 22 so no big loss, but for GWS I think he will be a decent get. He should benefit from having Sheedy and Williams as coaches too I would think.

I think Palmer is a little selfish at times on the field, that probably contributed to his lack of game time. Honestly he's a good player who needs opportunity.
Great pick up GWS, solid player who can only get better. Seemed to be in a stalemate position at Freo with injuries and then trying to get back into the best 22. But a fresh start, and guaranteed midfield responsibilties put on his shoulders will make him take that next step. Things are starting to fall in place for you guys, look forward to the next few signings being released.

Surely this kid has something to offer to GWS. With more game time he will become the stellar player many people hoped he could be.

Really think he will play some great football next year, he's as determined as they come. Think I'm going to have to adopt GWS as my second side as well.
