View Full Version : A Question regarding trading draft picks ?

I was wondering can clubs actually trade their next season's draft picks in a player transaction.
For instance, with North poaching Jade Rawlings (and don't I feel stupid !!!!) I still find it hard that the Hawkers will be satisfied with a 1st rnder and a player as North really haven't got that many naturally good young players that they would give away ... but say if north offered their next year's 1st rnd pick in addition to this years one, I think that would be fair.
Therefore 1st rnd national draft 2003 plus 1st rnd national draft 2004 picks for Jade Rawlings.
They do these sort of deals in the NBA and it's win win for all parties. For instance Detroit which finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference have the 2nd pick in the NBA draft, due to a previous year's trade with the Memphis Grizzlies (Onya Jerry West another blunder)
I don't see why it can't work in the AFL.

How did North POACH Jade?
He was uncontracted looked at by what 3-4 clubs we one. If you want to talk about poaching, then you should know with your clubs history.
You also know nothing about our list, no naturally good young players,
D.Motlop
Harris
Hale
Hamish
Jones
Harvey. B
Clayton.J
Grima
Urch
etc etc

Okay I'm sorry poaching probably wasn't the right word and yes Carlton did the same thing for many years.
Anyway you guys are laughing, you got Longmire and Carey for next to nothing from the swans.

We approached the Swans, they said here take Carey for $10000 and Longmire cost us $15000 simple. No poaching they werent contracted, they were in the Swans zone and we need them to give up the rights to them.

I would not consider Brent Harvey to be a young player.
He's 24/25 years old ?(Somewhere around that age bracket)
Young players I consider are aged 21 or less.
Some of those other young players you listed like Hale, Hamish, Jeremy Clayton, Grima and Urch aren't really proven at AFL level (not sure if anyone of them bar Hale have played in the seniorsyet) so you can't say for certain if they are going to make it.
back to the original question.
Does anyone know if you can trade next years draft picks????
I dont think u can.

no you cant, and it wont be necessary to contemplate it either, because hawforn are not as stupid as boganboy and can see that there is talent in our list. i think that rawlings + brett johnson for baird + pick no.9 is fair...and before you say anything bogan, i dont care what you think of that trade!!

he is not doubting the young stocks, but rather believes that the young players at the club that hawthorn would want in a trade are players that the roos would want to keep.

In Fairness to bogan_blue, he did say "good young players that we were prepared to trade away."
I don't think any of the players you mentioned would be on the cards at all with the exception of J. Clayton
Corey Jones I would probably accept (not too happy about it) but only if it was a straight swap and I really doubt that Hawthorn would go for that one
bogan_blue did admit his mistake with the "no way roos" thread so perhaps he is growing up after all
