'Essendon skipper James Hird spoke passionately on Wednesday night at the Crichton Medal about the quality of the Essendon list. Hird said the team has a bright future ahead of them and hoped the club and players would be able to keep the list together as much as possible. Continuing Hird's sentiments, the news that Dean Rioli re-signed with the club earlier this week, was welcomed by all involved with Essendon. Rioli signed a new two-year deal that will see him at Windy Hill to at least the end of the 2005 season.

Rioli was drafted to Essendon as a rookie in 1998 and was elevated to the senior list at the end of 1999. He has played 72 games with the Bombers and been used in numerous on-field roles, including the mid-field and across half-back. The 25-year-old received a National Rising Star nomination in 1999 and was a member of the 2000 pre-season Premiership side. '

Hell yeah, I love that guy. I would love to see our forward read:

Cupido, Lloyd, ???
Rioli, Lucas, Hird

And, for that to happen for extended periods of time. I think Rioli is one of the most highly skilled damaging set up men in the comp and his lack of fitness should really see him play more of an unaccountable role across half forward rather than on the ball or at half back.

Dean Rioli.
Magnificent to watch, brilliant hands, brilliant kick, vision. Could not care at how opposistion fans get into his body shape, would walk into any team. The boy plays big, his bulk is an asset.
Two more years ?
Magic.

I think I probably haven't appreciated Rioli's efforts as much this year as I should have. It is easy to take his disposal for granted.

The only issue I have is that we don't see his best often enough.

Thats great news.

He was starting to play very good towards the end of the season and in the finals. Lets hope the others sign that are yet to sign.
