Controversies of the Century (http://www.richmondfc.com.au/theclub/history/100tigertreasures/controversiesofthecentury/tabid/11592/default.aspx)THE JEFF HOGG TRADE

At the end of the 1993 season, Richmond sent shock waves through the football world when it decided to put captain and five-time winner of the Club’s Leading Goalkicker award, Jeff Hogg, up for trade. Hogg eventually was cleared to Fitzroy in exchange for three players – Paul Broderick, Michael Gale and Matthew Dundas.

Tale of a titanic Tiger trade (http://m.afl.com.au/news.htm;jsessionid=0AA40310560F7D461C5FC9AC5FEAF775?action= handleNewsArticleById&id=103723&listRetrievedBy=TEAM&listId=42)

Since the introduction of the AFL's trading period two decades ago, there's been no bigger trade from a Richmond perspective than the one that took place in October 1993 when Tiger captain, Jeff Hogg, went to Fitzroy in exchange for three Lion players - Paul Broderick, Michael Gale and Matthew Dundas.

1993 saw a new kid arrive on the block for the Tigers . . . a raw, gangly, exciting teenager from Tasmania by the name of Matthew Richardson. Fitzroy felt the 26-year-old Hogg, who had taken over the Tigers' captaincy in 1993, was an ideal replacement for Lynch.

For Hoggy . . . A back problem, which had restricted him at Richmond, failed to improve, and he managed just 40 games and 41 goals until he - and, indeed, Fitzroy - bowed out of the game after the 1996 season.

Hogg played competitive tennis instead of football during his formative sporting years. He preferred tennis, but was spotted by the Tigers playing football for Mt Waverley High and worked his way through the under 19s at Punt Road.

With spearhead, Jeff Hogg, in scintillating form, Richmond smashed its arch rivals by 57 points in a performance dubbed the "Mother's Day Massacre". Hogg kicked 10 goals, as the Tiger underdogs went on the rampage against their arch rivals.

10: Michael Gale, Paul Broderick and Matthew Dundas (Rich) for Jeff Hogg and Trent Cummings Fitz) - 1993

One of the biggest deals in AFL history also yielded Steven Jurica at pick No.26 for the Tigers. Hogg's best footy was already behind him and Cummings at pick No.6 was questionable at best for the Lions, playing just 27 games in two seasons. Broderick, in particular, was a steal for the Tigers, going on to win the 1996 best-and-fairest as part of his 169 games at Punt Rd.
