Originally from Manjimup, Paul Peos was recruited by East Perth after making a big impression as a member of Western Australia's Teal Cup team. He made his debut for the Royals in 1986, and at the end of the year, after being the only rookie in the league to play in all his team's matches for the season, was chosen in West Coast's inaugural VFL squad.

Between 1987 and 1992 he alternated between the Eagles and Royals, earning plaudits for his strong marking, coolness under duress, and exemplary conversion rate when playing in the forward lines. At the end of the 1992 season he was traded to Brisbane where he played 33 games in two seasons, kicking 40 goals.

One of the outstanding schoolboy players of his time, Peos resisted strong overtures from Carlton before joining the West Coast Eagles as part of the inaugural squad. Peos was a product of the exceptional 1985 Teal Cup team which produced players of the calibre of John Worsfold, Guy McKenna, Chris Lewis, Chris Waterman, Peter Sumich, Scott Watters and Allen Jakovich.

He had two stints with the club, playing 51 games from 1987 to 1992 before transferring to Brisbane where he played 33 games in two seasons before returning to WA to play with East Perth. He was then recruited in the 1995 pre-season draft and played a further four games with the West Coast Eagles.

Other members of that outstanding team included current senior coach John Worsfold and his assistant Peter Sumich. Together with Chris Lewis, Scott Watters, Paul Peos, Chris Waterman and Guy McKenna, they made up the Magnificent Seven, when they graduated to the West Coast Eagles in the late 80s.

Peos still gets a kick out of Eagles history (http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/afl-news/peos-still-gets-a-kick-out-of-eagles-history-20110801-1i7w2.html)

As West Coast prepares to mark its 25th anniversary with an inaugural hall of fame induction on Friday night, Peos, 43, yesterday recounted the first official kick in club history.

"I was at half-back and, from memory, Phil Narkle dished out a pretty sharp handball. I then got this horribly hurried kick forward, " Peos recalled.

"My timing for going to Brisbane was pretty good as the Bears had just moved from Carrara to the Gabba and the facilities were probably as good as any club going around.

"Injuries were the biggest issue for me (at West Coast). Life's about opportunities and opportunities came but too often I was unavailable and couldn't capitalise on them. I was in the (squad of) 25 for the 1992 grand final, so that shows I wasn't far off."

Carlton almost succeeded in cradle-snatching another outstanding talent from a WA club.

The Blues were hot on the heels of East Perth tyro Paul Peos, who attracted their scouts during last year's Teal Cup series in Perth.

Peos, 18, from Manjimup in WA's south-west, at one stage looked as though he could have taken up Carlton's bid and flown to Melbourne.

In the end he made his league debut for East Perth against Swan Districts and at least the WA public will have the chance of seeing him develop before he makes the move.
