Drafted at no.3 in the 1996 AFL Draft, there were big raps on Hilton as a quality key position player. Recruited from Murray Bushrangers, at the time of the draft Hilton was injured, but that did not stop him being picked up by the Brisbane Lions. He played just 9 games with them in 2 seasons (making his debut in 1998), before being traded to the Richmond Football Club. While there he suffered a spate of injuries and only managed 82 games there over 7 seasons. He was delisted at the end of 2005, at the age of only 26.

Despite having an injury interrupted junior career, the Brisbane Lions used their draft compensatory priority selection (number three overall) to select Rory Hilton – an outstanding junior midfielder with the Wodonga Raiders and Murray Bushrangers.
A frustrating beginning to Rory’s AFL career saw the youngster struck down with a serious knee injury, which prevented him from debuting until 1998. After a relatively successful year he requested to be traded back to Victoria , and Richmond quickly flagged their enthusiasm.

Scott Bamford and Tristan Lynch were traded to Geelong and Rory Hilton was traded to Richmond in a complicated four-way deal which saw Brisbane gain the services of Adam Heuskes from Port Adelaide and Martin McKinnon from Geelong.
