AFLQ career

Pask began his career at the Western Magpies and in 2004 won the National Australia Bank AFLQ Rising Star Award as well as finishing runner-up in the Western Magpies Best and Fairest. Following this season Pask was selected by the Brisbane Lions in the National Draft.

Brisbane Lions

Pask was into his second year on the Lions' list before he was elevated to the Brisbane Lions Senior team in May 2006. Pask played eight senior games for the Brisbane Lions before subcuming to injury which saw him derail his momentum. Pask then struggled to find pace and consistency after tearing his hamstring and re injuring it several times again. He was moved onto the Western Bulldogs in 2007.

Following his de-listing from the Brisbane Lions, the Bulldogs were keen to snap up Pask as a rookie in case of further injuries to key-position players in 2007. Is a hard-working big man who can play at either end of the ground.

The strongly built key position utility had played mainly as a forward until the middle of season 2005, whereupon he moved back into the defensive half with good effect. Pask, previously a virtual one-man forward line for the Western Magpies in the AFLQ, is trying to emulate Robert Copeland who established himself at the Lions after being rejected for a rookie list spot at his first try. He showed good versatility when swinging back for the latter stages of last season with the Suncoast Lions, his good body work and timing on the spoil coming in very handy. In 2004 Pask won the AFLQ’s Rising Star award last year and was runner-up in the Western Magpies’ best and fairest despite an injury-interrupted first half of the year. Is a long-time Queensland underage representative.

Interview (http://www.*********.com.au/afl/ups-and-downs-afl-marty-pask-experience-part-1)

MM: As a young guy growing up, did you always want to play AFL?
MP: No, I didn't. It's actually something that sort of, playing footy-wise, found me. I played a lot of cricket as a junior right up until grade ten or eleven at high school, and one day I was just filling in numbers and a mate took me down to play footy at Wests (Western Magpies) and there was a guy named Geoff Jennings who captain-coached Footscray - he won a Best and Fairest there at the Bulldogs. He was the senior coach at Wests and then I started playing senior footy, made a couple of Queensland Cup sides at 16, 17 and 18 and was fortunate enough to get drafted. It was only up until I was about 18 when I stopped playing cricket and then decided to play footy.

MM: How did you feel when you were drafted by Brisbane in 2004?
MP: It was good to stay home; I was pretty close to my mum. Playing in Queensland where you had your mates was probably a good thing and looking back, Queensland was all I had known growing up. I knew the Gold Coast, I knew Brisbane, I went to school in Brisbane, and the club had obviously had all that success. So I was coming to a club that was a very successful organisation, so I really enjoyed that aspect as well because you learnt so quickly and you learnt what successful people did in business as well as football, and the contacts and the people that you're around at that time was pretty special.

Pask lifts Suncoast (http://www.lions.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/5085/newsid/30865/default.aspx)
12:00 AM Sun 20 Aug, 2006

A dominant 10-goal performance by big forward Marty Pask has ensured the Suncoast Lions will play a virtual elimination in their final AFLQ qualifying round at Fisherman’s Road, Maroochydore next Sunday.

Pask, who had been quiet in the opening term, burst through a pack, gave off a handball, took it back and goalled from 50m on the run to open the second term and send his team on their way.

The 21-year-old kicked 3.2 for the quarter as the Lions stretched their lead to 28 points at the main break, and was lively in the third term again, setting up several goals. He put on a clinic in the last term, taking a string of big pack marks sandwiched between two and three Redland players, blasted 6.2 of his side’s 8.5 for the term.

In his second season on the rookie list, Pask got the call-up today after Lions ace Nigel Lappin, yet to play this season due to an ankle injury, was put on the long-term injury list.

It is recognition for an outstanding start to the AFLQ season in which he's kicked 23 goals in the past three weeks at full forward after some strong performances at fullback in the early rounds.

A long-time Queensland junior representative, he won the AFLQ's Rising Star award in 2004, when he was also runner-up in the Western Magpies' B&F despite an injury-interrupted first half of the year.

Aker pushes Pask and pots Lions, again (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/aker-pushes-pask-and-pots-lions-again/story-e6frf9kf-1111112475137)

The former Lions star has spoken out in defence of another teammate shown the door at the Gabba. Akermanis can't believe the Lions delisted former rookie Marty Pask and will be pushing his case at his new club, the Bulldogs, and around the AFL. "I do not understand how Brisbane could get rid of him (Pask) to keep some others who are undersized, slow and, to be honest, B-graders who will never make it in the AFL," Akermanis said.
"I would have thought he'd be an asset to any club. He's such a good-sized kid and he's played AFL footy."
"With the right mix and the right coach, I can see a great future."

Leisel Jones began a romance with Brisbane Lions AFL player Marty Pask in November, just before he was drafted to Western Bulldogs in Melbourne.

She describes Pask as a "good distraction" who gives her much-needed balance in life.

"I would have been 100 times worse off without Marty, because he understands so much about sport," Jones said.

OLYMPIC gold medallist Leisel Jones and former AFL footballer Marty Pask have split months before they were due to wed. Jones and Pask, who met two years ago, released a joint statement yesterday.

Jones said: "Marty and I met at a time that was right for both of us and we have shared some wonderful memories together but, over time, we have realised that we were not ready for the commitment of marriage."
