View Full Version : Domestic Super League
There is a poll on baggygreen.com.au that asks if Australias domestic competion should expand into New Zealand and South Africa, much like the Super 12 rugby. How do others feel about this proposal. I think playing one day games against New Zealand would be something worth looking at.

It would not be against New Zealand, it would be against some of New Zealand's provincial sides. I think that is what they mean.
I am all for the idea of having a super league type set up, it would be like a training ground for international cricket. However, it is not really viable, but, I would love to see it happen.

I love the idea of it. We'd dominate so bad...
there shoud be some manner of northern hemisphere / southern hemisphere split with a championship at the end.
The provincial sides was what i intended. Does anyone know how many side they have in NZ
There was sort of a mini champions league a few seasons ago in Perth with Western Australia, Central Districts, KwaZulu-Natal and Mumbai playing each other in a one-day competition towards the end of the 2000/01 season.
The choice of teams seemed a bit ad hoc though as WA were the previous season's winners at the time whereas Central Districts were the current season's winners in New Zealand.
Western Australia won the thing. Here's the link (http://www.cricket.org/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/2000-01/OTHERS+ICC/CHAMPCUP/SCORECARDS/)
I like the idea of a Champions Cup each year.
I'm not too keen on almagamating our one-day competition with NZ, say.

It would work well as long as the teams weren't decimated by international commitments. Say a 10 week competition involving:
5 teams in Australia
5 in RSA
2/3 in NZ
2 in Zim
Maybe Kenya or Namibia.
Cricket isn't like Rugby, teams could play 3 games in a week no worries. And as long as there was no international cricket on then, it would work a treat. But a comp with all the best players out spells disaster, much like the current comp.
I agree with DaveW - I like the idea of a regular champions league. That really has merit and is probably the most feasible option, financially and scheduling-wise.
I'd draw the line at rearranging our domestic cricket too much. I think it goes alright as it is.

Sorry Rob - this is the reason Cricket in England is so pathetic; they play every second day. Too much cricke = not enough pressure to perform = crap cricketers.

Playing every second day is a bit different to playing 3 games in a week as part of playing 15 or so games in 10 weeks. My point was that you could get a 16 team comp over and done with within 10 weeks with each team playing each other once, as opposed to the super 12 rugby where a team has to have a week between matches.
And it is one day cricket, it's not like the bowlers are sending down 40 overs a day.
But IMO, the reason why English cricket is so pathetic is more to do with the large number of teams and no stability in the top division (i.e 3 teams out of 10 going down, 3 going up every year), so the top players can get away with playing 2nd division cricket. Much of the problem would be fixed with a 1 down 1 up system. While they do play too much cricket, I don't think it has as much to do with playing standards as the problem of too many teams speading the talent.

I spent a winter playing cricket in England. And the reason, from what I saw, why there cricket is going down the tubes is that they have too many first class sides which means that the limited talent that they have is spread to thin. So, whilst there are still good players getting about, alot of ordinary players are playing first class cricket.

great idea i doubt that it would ever expand as far as RSA though, It would be awsome to have.

I reckon it'd be a fantastic idea.
It would hopefully raise gate attendances around the country, so the states would get more money pumped into em.
And if the likes of Zimbabwe, Kenya and Nambia have a team or 2 involved, its going to help there development alot too.
