JAEGER O'MEARA
D.O.B: 23/02/1994
Height: 182cm
Weight: 75kg
WAFL club: Perth
THE RUNDOWN:
The Dongara teenager has been touted as the next David Swallow - and for good reason.
WA 18’s best all-rounder has already turned high-profile recruiters in AFL circles, with Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney both reportedly fighting over his future services.
GWS’ draft concessions allow them to select four players nationwide that are 17 this year, who turn 18 in the first four months of next year, then on-trade to other clubs.
O’Meara, 17, is top of WA’s most wanted list. O’Meara is a dynamic midfielder who gained All-Australian selection as a 15-year-old and then was added to the AFL Academy after strong performances at last year’s under-16 national championship.
The Perth colt tested superbly during the recent academy camp. His 2.8sec. over 20m would have placed him third at last year’s AFL Draft Combine. He also showcased his endurance by reaching level 14.3 in the beep test.
To wrap it up – he is technically sound on both feet, can play anywhere in the midfield and is a solid overhead mark for his size.

That spoon in your debut season is starting to not look so bad.
Congrats on O'Meara, wish we could have had him.
Also jealous on how you guys have all the WA talent!!!
O'Meara, Bennell, Swallow & Matera. Some pretty good talent being produced in the western states. :o

Funny, if Port didn't win their last game I wonder if we would have still been able to get him.

Sure - Ablett, Day and a compo pick would of got it over the line :thumbsu:
What's scary to think about is that he'll have two pre-seasons into him before he makes his debut. Will set him up nicely for the senior level. He's looking a bit scrawny at the moment!
Hope he goes well in the NEAFL next year. Will be keeping an eye on him. :thumbsu:
Congratulations to the Suns...Jaeger is an absolute jet and when you have him Swallow and Ablett running through the midfield in 2 years roving to Zac Smith it will be scary to say the least for us other clubs

Not having a go at the NEAFL or anything, but would there be any thought from Gold Coast to keep him in Perth next year, where he will no doubtly play 22 games in a stronger competition
On the other hand, having him around the club training would be usefull too

Don't really think it's having a go at all. The WAFL is by far the better comp, IMO. NEAFL still developing.
But no. Jaeger is already on his way to the Coast from what I understand. He'll go over to Arizona with the team and get a whole pre-season into him, followed by a season in the Suns Reserves. Or so the Coaches at GC have said. Probably good for him to be around the team immediately, too. Build up some friendships and contacts.
Think of Swallow. He was here a year before he got drafted. While the VFL and NEAFL are different in terms of ability, O'Meara would still benefit from being up on the coast experiencing our lifestyles, as well as forming relationships with the players and coaches.
Unless he has to finish off some schooling, which I don't think he does, moving to the Gold Coast early will be the right decision.
Seems that Jag is happy to be a Sun! Article about in on the AFL site here. (http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/125090/default.aspx)
TEEN sensation Jaeger O'Meara could not be happier.
Aside from staying in his home state of Western Australia, the 17-year-old prodigy - who will play for Gold Coast in 2013 - said the club he wanted to play for most was the Suns.
Speaking to AFL.com.au, O'Meara said he was excited when he found out the Suns would select him.
"If I didn't get to stay in WA I was hoping I would go to the Gold Coast so I'm definitely very excited," O'Meara said.
"They were in my top three preferences so I'm very grateful to be able to go there. Obviously they're a very good club and I've only heard good things about them
"They're also heading in the right direction, they've got a number of outstanding young players and also they've got the older more experienced guys like Gary Ablett, Michael Rischitelli and Nathan Bock as well. I'm looking forward to being part of it and having some success in the future."
"I'm a down-to-earth kind of guy who likes to hang out with his mates. I enjoy a bit of fashion as well so I think that suits Gold Coast pretty well so I'm looking forward to heading over there," he said.
Really mature kid. Exciting times!

Damn, he looks good in that. :D

haha, well we are putting Jaeger on "Lay-by" may as well add her too :D
Jokes aside, seriously looking forward to checking the kid play next year in the NEAFL. They should try to organise as many Gold Coast reserves games as curtain raisers and hopefully I don't miss too many games with my own footy committments.

You could just commit to playing for the Suns NEAFL team :)
Should be a good shot at premiers next season, especially if they don't throw their finals game due to commitment to their Thailand end of season trip :thumbsu:

Nice to read that Rischitelli & other Suns sent him supportive texts.
Minimal game time for the JaegerBomb in 2012 (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/gold-coast-star-signing-jaeger-omeara-to-spend-2012-in-gym/story-fn69a32t-1226170552961?sv=37bb53b2a60eede56d038617033a58f)
GOLD Coast will wrap prized WA junior Jaeger O'Meara in cotton wool next year ahead of his highly-anticipated AFL debut in 2013.
Suns coach Guy McKenna said the club had already decided that O'Meara would only play a minimal number of matches for the Gold Coast reserves team, which plays in the new North East Australian Football League.
I guess Bluey's comments seem to make sense. But I hope he can still play ~10 games, just to keep his hunger there. JOM is a VERY skinny boy though. Cannot blame Bluey for wanting to bulk him up a little before the AFL run.
Can one guy do conditioning work all year? His pre-season will be 15 months long! It'll be like the Hulk coming out to play.
If he comes out with half the body David Swallow has built himself I will be impressed. But mind you it's useless having a body built like a brick shithouse if you can not use it in a game. So he is gonna have to play SOME games!
Good idea. Agreed in that it would be great if he formed into another Swallow-body type.

GOLD Coast coach Guy McKenna admits he hasn't seen too much of teenage prodigy Jaeger O'Meara doing what he does best in the flesh, but he is certain about one thing.
The quietly-spoken 17-year-old from Dongara has what it takes to become a superstar.
McKenna agreed acquiring the future draft rights to O’Meara from Greater Western Sydney was a steal and he believed playing him alongside Suns captain Gary Ablett from 2013 would significantly benefit not just the player, but the whole club.
“I actually texted Gaz ‘he said his favourite number is 9’ so (be) prepared to give that one up,” the coach joked.
“I think that’s an advantage for some of these young boys. We understand what sort of player Gary has been over the course of his career and what an elite talent he has been and he’s also such a great leader.

Damn, congratulations on this pick. You guys are surely looking the goods in the not too distant future. As a Docker's supporter I have a soft spot for your club. The way both teams are going we might just head off in a GF relatively soon, we would win of course, that goes without saying, but your list is astonishing!
Interesting to see in his interview that he loves the beach, which is why the Gold Coast was his preferred destination after any of the WA clubs.
Looks like another beach boy to join Shaw and Brennan. Sounds good.
His favourite player was also Peter Matera, much to Bluey's dismay! Hope he and Brandon get along well.

God damn, can't watch that video in my region. Really need to get a Australian VPN or something.
edit: scrap that. VPN up and running :)
Rated top 3 in the intra-club on the weekend by Bluey. Certainly not a bad effort. :D
Played his first real 'game' on the weekend, if you could call it such.
Starting on the bench(not the sub) against Melbourne for his first game. Picked up 1 disposal and 2 tackles. Clearly took him some time to get used to the speed of the game.
Saw much more of his future in the game against Brisbane. He was subbed in for Hunt in the second quarter. So in 20 minutes of play with time-on, he amassed 5 kicks, 2 handballs and 2 tackles. Certainly not bad at all.
Nominated in the first Suns GOLD highlights play for his efforts against Brisbane. He takes 5 steps and is gone. Lightning off the mark! At about 2.40:

hi sunny.
what caught my attention with omeara is his blistering pace, speed off the mark, and his anticipation.
anticipation can be learned. pace can be built.
but nothing cept a lucky bag of genetics and subconcious will, can make a jaeger omeara.
.
Damn. Every time I watch his highlights above I curse at not being able to see him in the seniors this year. :D
Anyway.
His first NEAFL appearance was a resounding success. Was far and away the best player in the team, according to Reserves Coach Shaun Hart.
http://www.goldcoastfc.com.au/data/jaeg.jpg
Hart didn’t hesitate when asked who was the best performed SUNS player.
“Jaegar O’Meara was outstanding as we expected him to be. He was the best man on the ground by a fair way,” he said.
...
When further quizzed on O’Meara, Hart couldn’t hide his excitement at his talent, and the frustration that the SUNS will have to wait until next season to see him at senior level.
“He is very exciting. The Sydney crowd that got their early would have been pretty excited to watch him play,” he said.
“It was a pleasure to see him running around and the speed he plays the game at already. His offensive and defensive balance, he plays both parts of the game very well, as well as stoppages.
“He was just outstanding today.
“It is going to be one of those things we have to keep being frustrated by that we won’t see him at senior level this year because he would play in the seniors, there is no doubt about that.

Watching Suns train. To me, Jaeger O'Meara is already their second best kid at the club (after Swallow) and can't play AFL for 12 months.

I can't wait for 2013 already just to see Jaeger play.
A great experience: O’Meara
Travelling with the boys to Melbourne last week taught me a lot about life as an AFL footballer and also made me twice as determined to learn everything I can this season so I'm ready to press my case for selection in round 1 next year.
It was great experience for a young footballer, not to mention a great performance by the team against the Kangaroos, and I got a lot out of the trip.
In addition to the procedural aspects of travelling that I learnt, the opportunity to spend time with the senior players was golden.
Being on flights with them, in the hotel, at meals and in team meetings and then in the rooms etc, it all really helped me to develop my relationships with them.
I love being in the football environment and I'm desperate to play round one next year, so I really want to work hard on those relationships.
My view of footy is that it is important to have strong relationships off the ground as well. That seems to be a strength of the teams that do really well. You look at Geelong, they all get along really well and it seems to be important to them.
I think that sort of culture is important to the SUNS to.
The travel protocols were a real eye opener and something I'll need to learn more about.
Being able to win on the road will be crucial to our success in the future and getting our travel practices right is very important.
Things such as hydration, what you eat, your sleeping patterns and recovery disciplines take on extra significance when you are playing interstate.
Another highlight was going to watch the Eagles play the Tigers with the coach.
The most important thing I took away was that West Coast’s defensive game was a lot better than Richmond's. That is really important in the AFL at the moment where the better sides are the ones that are stronger defensively.
Bluey asked me to follow one player and I chose Trent Cotchin. The thing that struck me was his change of pace. He really used his explosiveness to his advantage, you could see that he had perfect timing of when to go and go hard.
It was a great lesson for me because he is a player I have always loved to watch and I hope to be able to develop into a similar type player in the coming years
