Dayne Zorko - Broadbeach Cats
Born: 1989
Height: 175
weight: 76

Originally from Surfers, a pacy, brilliant, classic on-baller in the true rover mould. Knows where the goals are and likes to give opinion to opposition and friends alike. Broadie's best performed player in Grogan Medal 2008, leading club goalkicker, equal club B&F winner 2008 and B&F in 2009. Representative in Queensland 2009 under 21 side and 2010 Queensland team. Picked up a dozen - yes, 12 big ones - against Western Magpies in 2010. Co captain 2010 and picked up his third B&F award while learning real estate is not for him.

Zorko is a quick and gutsy midfielder who has dominated the local Queensland competition for the past four years.

The Broadbeach Captain is fresh from another outstanding season in the NEAFL, winning the 2011 Syd Guildford Trophy as the Football Record Player of the Year and claiming his fourth successive Best and Fairest award with the Cats.

In fact, Zorko has finished in the Grogan Medal top ten in three of the past four seasons.

The former State U18 and U12 Captain has been considered unlucky not to have been previously drafted considering his natural ability to play both in the midfield and up forward.

His nous in front of goals was never more evident than in 2010 when he lined up at full-forward against the Western Magpies and booted a career-best 12 goals in one of his more stellar individual efforts.

From the youtube QLD vs WA clip: the commendators described him as 'that sort of player that can really rally the boys'. Good 4th qtr by Zorko.

Looks and moves a bit like Rockcliff in that clip.

Quite a few parallels to Rocky.

Great footballer with runs on the board overlooked in several drafts because of percived physical deficiencies (Rocky unfit, Zorko too short). Regardless, just kept getting back off the ground and performing in a lower league until he demanded AFL selection.

He won't die wondering, that's for sure. I'm really happy about this selection.

His nickname is Tinka btw.

I'm excited about him. Might just be because I like seeing AFL footballers closer to my height.

Broadbeach Cats website (http://www.broadbeachcats.com.au/)

Tinka finally gets his just reward. Somewhere inside a trade of Melbourne defender Matthew Warnock to the Gold Coast, as part of a three-way trade deal the Lions gave pick No.52 in the NAB AFL National Draft to the Demons. In return, the Lions gained Queensland zone player Dayne Zorko (he was the captain of QAFL team Broadbeach in 2011) and pick No.47 from the Suns. Gold Coast gained the Lions' second round pick (No.34).

The Fox Factor at play, Coach Gus' push in the media and the will of the Club has prevailed. Take a good look at Tink in the Cats jumper, it will be a while before we see it again post a successful AFL career. And if for whatever reason we run up against you wearing a Lions jumper, let the game begin.
The Supreme Master told us: There are 3 certainties in this life: death, taxes and Dayne Zorko will play AFL footy. Many are called, but only a few can win the holiday to a pre season!

2007 AFL Draft Prospect: Dayne Zorko (http://www.**********.net/2007-afl-draft-prospect-dayne-zorko/)

Name: Dayne Zorko
Height: 176
Weight: 69
State: Queensland
Club(s): Broadbeach

AFL Positions:
At his size he will need to be a versatile player for teams to be interested in him. Zorko should be able to play as a small forward, a midfielder or a back pocket. He has some tricks around goal to use so a team might draft him with a forward spot his destination.

7th December 2007 (http://www.noosanews.com.au/story/2007/12/07/nn-afl-star-presses-his-rookie-claims-in-melbourne/)

Magin flew south on Sunday night with his Queensland under-18 captain Dayne Zorko (Broadbeach) and Rohan Bail (Mt Gravatt) to train with the Bombers until Friday, while Matthew Davis (Mt Gravatt) headed to Richmond for eight days.

11 December 2007 (http://www.velocitysports.com.au/default.asp?PageID=491)Also passed over in what was the last opportunity for players to break into the AFL system this year were Queensland U18 players Dayne Zorko, Ben Gibson, Matty Davis and Darin Stewart and fellow draft hopefuls Rohan Bail, Mathew Clarke and Broc McCauley.

DAYNE ZORKO TO CAPTAIN U18 SCORPIONS (http://www-static.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-4711-0-0-0&sID=55257&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=4873178&sectionID=55257)

Craven said 18-year-old Zorko had proven himself a worthy choice to follow in the footsteps of recent Queensland U18 captains Albert Proud (2006), Wayde Mills (2005) and Will Hamill (2004).

"He leads by example on the field in every situation and has a big influence over the group off the field," Craven said.

Zorko, only 176cm, is a first-year top-age midfielder who was among Queensland's best U16 players in 2005 but missed the opportunity to play at U18 level last year due to injury.

A wonderfully courageous and inspirational type, he is at his best around the contest and is also a prolific goal-kicker.

Originally from Surfers Paradise, now at Broadbeach, he was a late starter to the '07 program after he had his appendix out but has quickly made up for lost time as the championships approached.

Gold Coast talent scouts eye gun youngster (http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/afl/coast-scouts-eye-young-gun/story-e6frepf6-1111116470535)

by: Andrew Hamilton and Chris Hartley
From: The Courier-Mail

The former Queensland under-18s captain was unlucky not to be drafted last year after starring for Queensland in the national championships, as well as in the annual Allies clash against Victoria at Optus Oval in grand final week. On that occasion Zorko had a day out, booting three goals in a best-on-ground performance. AFL recruiters had concerns over his size but AFLQ chief executive Richard Griffiths, who is also a member of the GC17 football committee, said he had blown away those misconceptions during a red-hot start to this year's competition under new coach Shaun Hart.

Hart laughed off concerns over his star pupil's size, saying Zorko was a tailor-made AFL footballer. "It is rubbish, mate – he is absolutely as good as they get in our state league," he said. "He was heavily tagged last week and still managed to kick five goals. He is very good at stoppages and is a phenomenal defensive player who usually makes about 10 tackles a game. I think there is a place, without a doubt, for Dayne Zorko on an AFL list."

Dozen goals for Cats Dayne Zorko (http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2010/06/21/230431_sport.html)
Nick Smart
June 21st, 2010

He was overlooked in the national draft a few years back but again pressed his strong AFL potential with the dozen majors."He's a pretty special talent and a good footballer," said Cats coach Adrian Smith. "It wasn't just the goals he kicked -- his chasing and tackling in the forward line was some of the best I have seen in a long time and he was outstanding.

Smith does not hesitate when asked if Zorko deserves a shot at AFL level. "I wish they would give him a crack," he said. "We had five GCFC boys playing in our team and I know there were a few eyes from the club there watching. Gee whiz, it would be hard for them not to be impressed by what he did on the day. Sometimes you give blokes opportunities and they run with it, and I think 'Tinker' would."

Club insiders suggest it will be the first of many milestone games for the 21-year-old, who rejected offers from interstate to stay with Broadbeach after he narrowly missed the 2007 and 2008 AFL draft.

Smith insists that if he was 5cm taller Zorko would be playing AFL football. He says he still should be and could be.

I've seen a lot of players at that elite who can't do the things that Dayne can do. He breaks the lines, he's got explosive speed and he uses the ball very well, he said.

Always attracting a strong tag because of his huge importance to his side, Smith says Zorko is handling the close attention better these days, and is getting a lot more support from his teammates.

State rover Dayne Zorko won his third consecutive Jim Stubbs Medal for Broadbeach’s best and fairest player at the club presentation dinner on Friday night. It is a remarkable effort by a player who is still only 21. Broadbeach officials are adamant the clever ballwinner and goalkicker should be given an opportunity at AFL level and it will be interesting to see if the Gold Coast Suns will give a chance to one of the QAFL’s best young players.

MAROONS' BEST INTERSTATE EFFORT? (http://www.sportzscene.com.au/index.php?page_id=417)

Rover Dayne Zorko showed the AFL recruiting scouts at the game and the team in his home town on the Gold Coast just what he was capable of with a brilliant performance that was the equal of any of the West Australians. Zorko won the hard ball, found it in space and capped his game with four goals, including three in the last quarter. His fourth major at the 32-minute mark of the final term, a sensational long, bouncing goal from 65m sent the crowd of around 3000 at Bendigo Bank Stadium into stunned silence.

Monday 20 June 2011

Broadbeach rover Dayne Zorko provided the greatest evidence yet that he deserves a chance at AFL level after a brilliant performance in Queensland’s thrilling interstate effort in WA on Saturday.
There was confusion over the statistics-taking on the day but unofficially the speedster collected 35 possessions and booted four goals, including three in the last quarter onslaught when the Maroons blasted eight goals to two.

It earned Zorko the Zane Taylor Medal to go alongside his three consecutive club champion awards with Broadbeach.

“It was definitely up there,” Zorko said of whether it was the best game he had ever played.

Monday, 5 September, 2011

Broadbeach captain Dayne Zorko has ridden an extraordinary mid-season vein of form all the way to the winning post in the 2011 Syd Guildford Trophy.

Zorko polled 21 votes in five games from Rounds 13-17 – only four short of the maximum – on his way to a season tally of 31 and a one-vote win over Southport’s Matthew Payne.

His blistering mid-season burst came after a relatively quiet start to the season in which he’d polled only five votes in the first eight rounds, and before he failed to catch the judge’s eye at all in the last four rounds.

Dayne Zorko has won a staggering fourth consecutive Broadbeach Cats B&F award. And he’s only 22.

The pocket-sized captain and midfielder (pictured) capped a sensational season when he polled 123 votes for a runaway win over prized off-season recruit and Queensland teammate Kallen Geary (82).

It was a margin which suggests, in numeric terms at least, Zorko was a 50 percent more valuable than the player voted the club’s No.2 player.

State Screening (http://www.broadbeachcats.com.au/newsDetail.php?We-ll-Miss-You-Tink-114)

He makes good decisions, has a good engine, is fast, aggressive, capable on both sides and directs the aggete to a target up to 50+m. Knows where the giant erections are and finds them consistently as a crumbing forward, or playing tall within the 50m arc, or breaking from central and boundary stoppages. Love watching him streak from the middle, eyes looking, looking, then down to the air conveyance before putting it through or hitting up a forward in position. Takes a pack mark that require double takes, moments later runs down a ball carrier, and is always at the bottom of the pack when the ump calls for it (next to Azza). Years ago, he would have been rewarded every time in those packs, simply because he has the nut in his sights and goes after it.

The images of 50m penalties sometimes blurr the big picture, and he doesn't back down when maybe he should. But why oh why he hasn't been on a club shopping list is anybody's guess. Size is often heard as a reason, and yet how many footy rooms have something about "the size of the fight in the dog"? Discipline is also whispered about the place, but this season has been no problem. Athleticism? Will match most at their beep, handball and jump tests etc.. But at the risk of begging the question, he can play football. He can change a football game.

And loyalty. He could've taken off to the SANFL or succumbed to the lures of Southport in a dollar chase. This bloke does stuff that defies the eyes. And we hope he has a 'happy ending'.

Broadbeach Profile (http://broadbeachcats.com.au/playerDetail.php?Zorko-15)

Number: 1
Born: 1989
Weight: 79
Height: 176
Senior Games Prior to 2011: 61
Sponsor: KLF Interior Linings

Knows where the goals are and likes to give opinion to opposition and friends alike. Winner Syd Guildford and runner-up Grogan Medal 2011. Broadie's best performed player in Grogan Medal 2008, leading club goalkicker, equal club B&F winner 2008 and B&F in 2009. Captain Queensland under 18, captain in Queensland 2009 under 21 side and representative 2010 Queensland team.

Picked up a dozen - yes, 12 big ones - against Western Magpies in 2010. Co captain 2010 and picked up his third B&F award while learning real estate is not for him. Makes you wonder what kind of wunderkids are in the AFL draft when Tinka wasn't picked up. Turned down lucrative offers interstate to remain at Catland and will certainly miff the SUNs when he turns it on against them in 2011.

Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr said the Lions were thrilled to secure the exciting home-grown prospect to the Club via the trade period, rather than try their luck at the National Draft. "After witnessing his impressive performance in the State game against Western Australia, our recruiting staff tracked him closely for the remainder of the season.”
“He has sparked plenty of interest from a number of opposition clubs, and we had no doubt that Dayne was going to be selected by someone at next month’s Draft.”
"We were actually prepared to use one of our second round selections at the Draft to get him to the Lions, so being able to effectively secure him during Trade Week for Pick No.34 is a great result. It eliminates the risk of someone trumping us on the day."
"Dayne's a really quick and talented midfielder/small forward who we feel is ready to play senior AFL footy next year."

Matt Angus, his coach at NEAFL club Broadbeach Cats, said Zorko would become a household name in the AFL and feature in the Lions' round 1 team.

"He was the most influential player in the NEAFL and he will have a long and successful AFL career now he has an opportunity," Angus said."Until this year, his attitude was not good enough," Angus said."By his own admission he didn't have the discipline required to make the next step. He lacked fitness and to be a good AFL defender you need to be very fit."

"To his credit he turned it around. He said before pre-season this year he wanted to give the AFL one last crack and he got fit and had an amazing season. He kicked three or four goals this year from outside 55 metres and they were at key moments."

Rob Kerr's Trade Week Analysis (http://www.lions.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/5085/newsid/125257/default.aspx)

Dayne has had an outstanding 2011. He certainly caught my attention when watching Niall McKeever play for Queensland against WA. I would go so far to say that his effort in that State game was one of the most competitive performances I have seen from a player this year. He refused to accept defeat and very nearly dragged his team over the line.

From then on, the recruiting team added him to our watch list and he impressed so much that he finished the season ranked inside our top 30 in our order of merit. While other clubs may disagree, I doubt they watched the NEAFL as closely as we did. Injury played a part late in the season, but by that stage Dayne was firmly cemented in our minds as a potential small defensive forward and midfielder who can kick goals and give us the option of releasing Todd Banfield up the ground more often.

Zorko trade

I’m pretty sure that’s the long and short of it, feels like the Suns got the best of this one, but we’ll have to keep an eye on young Zorko there. Dayne Zorko averaged 125 SC Points at ’07 U18 Champs and 120 in ’07 TAC Cup. Of 12 junior games Champion Data has on record, six were 150+

The 19-year-old midfielder was on a list of Queensland players, including Nikos Keim, Adam Spackman, Nathan Kinch, Shaun Tapp and Rohan Bail, with potential to make the AFL.

"It's definitely going to be a big weekend against Western Australia, but that doesn't mean if I play well up there that I'm going to be picked," Zorko said.

"I have to keep playing good football at Broadbeach where I am now."

"It would be awesome to play for St Kilda," Zorko said. "If the Gold Coast team comes in, I think I'd definitely want to play for them so I can stay at home."

Zorko was full of praise for the Cats, saying head coach Matt Angus and fitness coach Gary Fox played a huge role in his elevation.

"Gary took us at the start of November and just carried us," Zorko said. "He was amazing. I've never had a fitness coach like him and I give a lot of credit to him, he was exceptional.

"I could just get to a lot more contests, I could move and go a lot harder for a lot longer instead of previously, where I haven't been able to. That's been the biggest change."

The Surfers Paradise junior admitted to thinking on occasions his AFL chance may have passed. "There's always those days, absolutely," he said. "After the state game, people told me something might happen and there was some hope there. There were a few days where I thought it wouldn't happen but I'm so grateful it has."

Just wondering if Zorko tested in the combine and if so does anyone have a link to his results or know what they were.

I heard through the grapevine that he won the handball comp, got somewhere in the 14's for the beep test and was midfield in the sprint test. But I wouldn't worry too much about all those results, because he can play the game, and will provide more value than some of these project "played basketball" 6'5 blokes that recruiters are in love with.

This is the sort of drafting you don't have to wait five years to see if they are up to it.Two years at most,so it's good from a list management perspective.

Hoping he can immediately show good thinking in what will be a quantum leap under pressure, especially if earmarked to play forward - he will basically have someone wearing him but I think this a pretty good punt from the Lions overall.

I don't know much about Zorko, but I do hope he shows a lot more than Bewick who I don't think is AFL standard, would love to be proved wrong though. I draw the comparison to Bewick merely based on their not too dissimilar pathway to AFL as mature agers.

This is my first professional AFL pre-season and it’s been very different to what a pre-season would be down at Broadbeach or elsewhere in the NEAFL. So far I’ve enjoyed it and the guys are just sensational so I couldn’t be happier. Physically, the running and the weights are at a very high standard and there’s so many guys at a higher fitness level than me that it pushes me and motivates me to get a better result which is great.

Today we woke up at around 5am and went for a bike ride and it was the first time I’ve ever got on a bike like that - they are very very good bikes! I did almost fall off though - they’ve called out “stop” and I didn’t hear and I went flying at about 40,000 km per hour, straight over the kerb, over the footpath, through gravel, through garden. But somehow I held it together and the bike was fine, thank god, because I don’t think Brett Burton would have been too happy with me if I’d wrecked the bike. Oh and I managed to stay alive which was good.

Jake, I am currently living with Ryan Lester and Bryce Retzlaff.

Yea Brent Harvey.

Footy Tragic (http://www.footytragic.com/blog/player-profiles/must-have-rookies-mature-aged/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed)

Compared to 2007, height doesn’t seem to matter as much anymore. Back when he was going through the junior system if you were under 180cm you might as well forget it unless you were a freak talent. Zorko stands at 175cm and four years ago his kicking could only be described as scrappy, at best. Clubs were willing to take a punt on 190cm midfielders who couldn’t kick, but not the shorter ones.

To his credit, Zorko plugged away in the QAFL (later rebranded as the NEAFL) for Broadbeach and won four consecutive best & fairest awards. His kicking has improved markedly in that time too, but a lot of the hallmarks his junior game was based on remain. He’s always had a tough attack on the ball and a very keen footy sense. Zorko is a bit like a traditional tough rover, but he also has the ability to go forward and kick goals.

He’s not very quick, but he’s worked hard on his endurance and looks like an Energizer bunny with his consistent repeat efforts. He already had a pretty mature body at 18, but at 22 now he’s got a lot more power, especially in his legs. He previously lacked depth in his kicking, but now he’s pretty comfortable hitting them 55-60m on the run.

Coming from the NEAFL, what has the step up been like?

Probably just the professionalism, training five days a week, being around the guys for a good portion of the day. Obviously skill level is a big difference as well.

Describe yourself as a player and what you hope to improve:

A forward defensive player is probably my go really. I love to tackle, I love chasing and it's always nice to kick a few goals and get rewarded for that. So over the preseason I'm just trying to work on my fitness and get my body right and if that all comes together then I'm sure the rest of it will come together as well.

One Saturday in June 2010, forward Korey Fulton was a late withdrawal for Broadbeach in their QAFL clash against the Western Magpies. Zorko, until then considered an on-baller, was played as a makeshift full-forward. He kicked 12 goals. Goalkicking has been part of his skillset ever since, with his 2011 season featuring a number of Buckley-esque goals drilled from 55m. That's great news for Brisbane, who plan to play him as a goal-kicking midfielder or as a small defensive forward, freeing Todd Banfield to drift up the ground.

He tackles. When Zorko kicked 12 against the Western Magpies, Broadbeach coach Adrian Smith was quick to point out the haul hadn't been his only contribution for the day. "It wasn't just the goals he kicked," said Smith. "His chasing and tackling in the forward line was some of the best I have seen in a long time." A hard-running, goal-scoring, tackling machine who is set to debut at the same age as Michael Barlow? Let the hype begin.

The intensity and work levels have certainly gone up a notch.

But while the running components are about the same, the intensity around the drills is a massive step up.

“The Club has been so good to me already, and I can’t wait to put on the guernsey for the first time and give a little bit back to the fans.”

“It’s surprising how well we’ve all gelled together,” he said.

“I’ve gotten closer to the boys than I ever expected so early on. The older guys are definitely embracing the younger guys and everyone just wants to be the one team.”

“We don’t want to be split up in all different groups. We’re one team and I believe we’re going about things the right way.”

Brisbane have been quiet on the issue. Zorko suffered a minor hip complaint several weeks ago, and his time is up. Brisbane quoted on their website that he would return at the end of the NAB Cup. He hasn't. Zorko needs to be removed from your team, if he is currently in it. He has allegedly had issues with his hip previously.

The most asked about rookie in history, Dayne Zorko, is over his hip flexor prob but needs conditioning b4 playing. He's missed 2 months.

Zorks - aka Toadfish - should be pushing for senior selection in 4-5 weeks.

Sounds about right. After missing a chunk of pre season, he would need a good 4-5 weeks for a bit of match fitness. We already know he can play at that level, so i think he will get a senior game once he gets fitness, test him out at top level.
