Why is it every year essendon gets shafted by the salary cap. we started building a side in 98, won a premiership in 2000, close in 2001. Then we lose players that we drafted at a young age because of the salary cap and cheats like brisbane and sydney get away with retaining players and recruiting top players. the afl should be like the english premier league, if you have the money spend it, go all out to buy and retain players.

How exactly are Essendon being shafted?
You know the salary cap going in, if you cannot manage your list within that cap, then any problems that occur are all your own doing.
The cap concessions to Sydney and Brisbane are dubious, but they have absolutely no correlation to Essendon's failure to manage it's list effectively.
Phat that negative essendon bias is starting to show mate:D

Yep, EPL is real fun for the 16 team who are NEVER up the top. EPL is probably the worst example of a sport you could think of mate. If they could change it to something like our comp, they would in a heartbeat.

I'd say the Bombers are probably paying middle of the rung players too much to start with. They have a good year and up the money to unrealistic figures. Silly.

I'll pay that one mate.
Actually don't mind your lot, very envious of the way your club is run (salary cap aside).

Exactly right.
Only thing stopping them is restraint of trade issues.

What is the salary cap - about $6m? We've had Hird, Lloyd, Fletcher, Mercuri earning about $2m between them. That leaves $4m for the other 34 players - average of about $115k per player. So when guys like Solomon/Blumfield/Caracella, etc want $300k per year it is very difficult to accomodate them.
I don't know what everyone is whining about. We needed to offload a midsize backman anyway - we just got the push we need. I am extremely happy with the way the Hardwick trade worked out for us. Losing Heffernan to ensure we landed Winderlich (or was it Layco ck?) was worth it. Caracella and pick 60 for Smokey McPhee and that other bloke has been a win.
I'm sure the Solomon trade will be just as good.

Dont tell me we are in **** with the salary cap again. How is this possible? is this because of the hird Lloyd thing?

He was. What makes it better is he was (and still is now) an Essendon suppoter as a kid. So the chances of him leaving us for $ are slim.
(Not saying that he's going to be the next superstar, but if he did, he'd stay for the club over money.)
Brisbane are struggling this year to stay in the salary cap, even with that extra bit of cash they get. A strong chance a few Brisbane players will be playing elsewhere.

39 goals from Cupido, numerous assits, handy time spent in mid-field, one of the silkiest footballers going around, what does this boy have to do to get some recognition off you ?

(Best first year player 2003) He was very good for us. But he is a flash-in-the-pan player. His type (ie. flashy, smart arse fwd pocket) don't last the distance, so i refuse to join in the group masterbation over him. Only time will tell, but i am quite confident that 5 years from now everyone will be saying 'gee he didn't really kick on like we thought he would'.
Thats why i think he will be moved to a wing in a couple of years when his endurance is better and his speed and kicking can be very handy weapons for us.

I hope he is moved away from forward pocket, but i'd like to see him play in defence for a while to get some accountability into his game. If Sheedy can change his attitude the potential is enormous. But we don't have enough goal kickers in the side to take him away from the foward line yet.

Kinnear beatson the brisbane recruiting man said Eastern Rangers made a mistake by not playing Cupido back to polish up his defensive game. Maybe playing him back might not be such a bad idea. with a view to moving him to midfield after that
