Nickname:

Gowers looked like the prototype for the new winger when he came of age in 1991. Tall, excellent overhead and a keen eye for goal, he was a critical component in the premiership charge.

Injuries conspired to cut Gowers down thereafter, and he never fulfilled the potential that shone in September 1991. He moved to Brisbane but spent more time on the treatment table than the training track.

Former Hawk Andrew Gowers played on Mainwaring in the 1991 grand final, which the Hawks won.

"I really admired Chris. We had quite a few battles. He was just a fantastic player. He was tough and talented and a really good athlete, and a great overhead mark," Gowers said.

XAVS GO FOR GOWERS (http://www.vafa.com.au/index.php?id=13&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=541&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=1&cHash=828c2fa8bf)

Andy book-ended his career with premierships at Old Xavs in the U19s in 1987 and seniors in 2000. In between, Gowers played 89 games at Hawthorn (1991 premiership) and 51 games at Brisbane (Bears and Lions).

Old Xaverians President Simon Hunt said that “Andy's playing credentials and experience speak for themselves. He has been coached by some of the great modern day coaches including Alan Jeans and Leigh Matthews and his family has a long standing involvement with the club, with his father Trevor captaining the club from 1969-73."

ANDY Gowers was once the boy next door type. He looked as tidy in his footy gear as he was in his disposals for Hawthorn and Brisbane.
Gowers then came to play for Old Xavs and made the VAFA team - he was ageless.
But this season the grey hairs have appeared and the brow has hardened as he entered his first year of coaching Old Xavs.
