Changes at BHHFC, players, personel and club news.
Reserves premiership captain Leigh Kitchen and Jackson Sketcher will be with Frankston.
DETERMINED to strengthen its list, Frankston has secured a couple of good recruits.
Box Hill pair Jackson Sketcher and Leigh Kitchin signed with the Dolphins on Saturday.
The midfielders played in Box Hill’s reserves premiership side this year, Kitchin as captain. Sketcher was a star at TAC Cup level with the Sandringham Dragons, jointly winning the 2010 Morrish Medal with Dyson Heppell.
Kitchin has played in Box Hill’s reserves three successive flags, twice being named best-on-ground in grand finals. He’s also a Hawks reserves B&F winner.
‘‘He’s played at Box Hill for three years and with the Hawthorn players he just hasn’t been able to get the opportunities,’’ Frankston coach Simon Goosey said. ‘‘They add a bit of depth to our midfield. It’s looking good.’’
As per a post I put up in another thread somewhere, apparently we have offered Gold Coast delistee Marc Lock a contract if he doesn't get drafted, though it appears Collingwood VFL has also and are likely to win his services if he's overlooked.

Former Gold Coast captain locked in for Box Hill
Muston to stay on at Box Hill.
Box Hill Hawks have completed their first significant signing of the off-season, securing inaugural Gold Coast captain Marc Lock.
The midfielder is relocating to Melbourne after being delisted by the Suns.
He played one senior match this year, against Carlton.
Box Hill recruiting manager Dale Bleach said Lock was intent on returning to the AFL

Musto’s Pre-Season Diary No. 1
Well here we go! Back at for another long gruelling summer. The break never seems long enough but never the less its exciting times ahead for season 2012. Off the bat congratulations to the Development Team for an outstanding season in 2011, but more importantly the Grand Final victory.
A group of 80+ turned out for the first session at Waverly Park on Monday. Our coach Damian ‘DC’ Carroll looks to have a massive pre-season ahead of us and there will be plenty of competition for spots on the list. Thanks to Ben Griffin (Strength & Conditioning C) for hitting the boys up with a 3.2km Time Trial straight up. A lot of the guys have come back in good condition but there is still plenty of improvement needed if we wish to be a real contender in 2012.

Marc Lock: Suns
DETAILS
JUMPER # 1
DOB 21/06/1991
HEIGHT 192cm
WEIGHT 83kg
FORMER CLUB Southport, QLD
Marc Lock was captain of the GC SUNS 2010 VFL side.Although the understated Lock had shown plenty as a junior level footballer – he received the Coaches Award as a defender after Gold Coast Stingrays undefeated run at the 2008 Under 18 State Championships - there was plenty of talent stealing the limelight during his first pre-season at the Gold Coast Football Club (as it was then known).
But Lock’s approachability, actions-not-words work ethic, and absolute commitment on the playing field each week clearly stood out because he the playing group’s clear first choice as the club’s inaugural captain.
He proved an inspired choice - at season end he also took home the club’s first best and fairest award.Lock was raised in Adelaide but moved to northern NSW as a teenager. He cut his footballing teeth at Coolangatta Tweed Heads AFC. Now played almost exclusively as a negating midfielder capable of pushing forward and pinching the odd goal, Lock’s on-field hallmarks are his clever ball use, level-headedness, running capacity and all round consistency.
Lock hands keys to Ablett
ALTHOUGH Gary Ablett will lead the Gold Coast Suns into their first AFL match and will go down in history as the team’s inaugural captain, technically the honour belongs to the little-known Marc Lock.
Lock, from Terranora on the NSW/QLD border, has been the captain of the Gold Coast for the past two years, leading the club through a season in the TAC Cup and a year in the VFL.

Club jumps into Hawthorn stripes at Box Hill
BOX Hill Hawks will ditch their traditional jumper and wear the Hawthorn strip in a move certain to anger club diehards.
The new jumper will still have Box Hill's trademark white horse displayed on the breast.
The famous Box Hill jumper, which had been unchanged since 1975, was voted out at a meeting of the club's board this morning.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/club-jumps-into-hawthorn-stripes-at-box-hill/story-fn53khop-1226203368222
I thought that if Box Hill was going to change the jumper it was going to be the brown and gold Hawk logo design they trialed in the last couple of years.

Patto has been rewarded for a solid year of effort with a Hawks rookie pick. Gibbo gone to Kangaroos unless there is another one. Hope it works for him but maybe it means he will come back to the Hawks anyway.
Good luck to them both
We've taken a few from the Hawks over the past couple of seasons :P
A couple more signings as mentioned in Musto's diary.
Max Otten - Max joins us off a year on the Sydney Swans Rookie List. A former Vic Metro Representative at 19 years old who looks ready to go. Has had a great start to the pre season and at 191cm and 85kg he will fit in perfectly around Wing/Half Back. (Andy's brother, originally from the Oakleigh Chargers.)
Matthew Scott – Matt joins us off a year on the Kangaroos Rookie List. He is an in-and-under midfielder coming off a reconstructed knee in mid 2011. Another 19 year old at 185cm and 75kg we can see him playing some good senior football once he returns mid year.

I hear that Daniel Pratt has signed on.
Pratt on board at Box Hill for 2012
Former North Melbourne defender Daniel Pratt has signed to play with Box Hill Hawks in 2012. Pratt, who played 119 AFL games for North Melbourne and Brisbane, will add significant experience to Box Hill’s defense and mid field.
With Sam Gibson (North Melbourne) and Adam Pattison (Hawthorn) being drafted in the AFL Rookie Draft last week and and other senior players Shaun Pollard and Haydn Kiel not returning to Box Hill in 2012, Senior Coach Damian Carroll was keen to recruit a player with senior AFL experience to City Oval. As well as being a senior player Pratt will also take on a coaching role with the Box Hill Hawks Academy that utilises Hawthorn’s training facilities at the Richo Centre
Other new players to sign with Box Hill Hawks for 2012 include
Marc Lock: former Gold Coast Suns player and inaugural captain when they played VFL in 2010
Max Otten: Sydney Swans rookie in 2011 and brother of Adelaide Crows player Andy.
Matthew Scott: North Melbourne Rookie.
Kalem Post: Collingwood VFL team in 2011.
Jason Salopek: TAC Cup Dandenong Stingrays player in 2011.
They join the following returning Box Hill Hawks players from 2011.
1st Year returning: Beau Muston, Josh Ralph, Taylor Gilchrist, Guy Phelps, Xavier Murphy, Ben Monkhorst, Tim Northe, Sam Cust, Daniel Cooper, Corey Cassidy, Jackson Bolton, Tom Cunningham
2nd Year returning: Brent Wallace, Michael Thompson, Liam Tobin, Jayden Cass, Luke Andrews, David Mirra, Ben Fagan, Aaron Johns, James Wilsen

Pratt & Muston will be handy, but it may be an inexperienced Box Hill line-up in 2012.
I was hoping we'd sign Michael Bussey of the Eastern Ranges FC. He was unlucky not to be drafted.

Jayden Hoegel would be considered a bit of a loss wouldn't he? He seems to feature frequently in the best players list.
There seems to be an enormous turnover in the playing list. What affect will this lack of consistency have on results? Does anybody have the number of Box Hill only players that have played in the last 3 years?

Disappointed that Hawthorn has decided to wipe out Box Hills' history by doing away with the Mustangs jumper. It was a great jumper and, being the same colours, there was no need for that. Former President and Life Member John Ure has quit the club as a result and I fully support his reasoning.

John Ure.
Life memger of Box Hill, Hawthorn, and the VFL.
In a statement on the club website, president John Ure said the Hawks would wear the new design for two years and at the end of 2011 make a decision about assuming a single jumper. All feedback would be taken into account. He said the alternate strip stemmed from the board’s wish to present Box Hill Hawks “in a manner that is progressive, attractive and marketable to today’s modern football market, while being respectful to the Box Hill Football Club’s long and proud history”.
“Since it was founded in 1937, the Box Hill Football Club has always worn a brown and gold jumper that incorporated the white horse logo. The new Box Hill Hawks jumper is true to that, however, it also recognises the club’s important relationship with Hawthorn and the Hawks emblem that it adopted in 2000. While Box Hill’s Mustang jumper is a magnificent one, it should be remembered that it was introduced as recently as 1974 and for almost four decades prior to that the club played in a jumper of completely different design. In 1974 Box Hill was being bold and progressive by presenting a new image to the football community through a new jumper and 36 years later in 2010 the club is doing exactly the same thing.”
I think he understands where things are going.
You can read some bitter things on VFL web pages.

BHH have signed Matt Jones for 2012.
He is a midfielder who played for Labrador last season and was runner up in the B+F.
He also made the NEAFL team of the year 2011.
Matt won the B+F for South Croydon in 2010. (EFL.)
He has also played TAC Cup with Eastern ranges.
So welcome back to Melbourne Matt.
PEOPLE STARTING TO TALK ABOUT THE
JONES BOY
For a player who arrived somewhat unheralded Labrador midfielder Matt Jones is certainly making an impression.
Despite the Tigers having been decimated through injury for the majority of the season Jones has been a shining light in the
midfi eld with his quick hands and ability to win inside and outside football a real feature. Jones arrived at Cooke-Murphy Oval
after an 89 senior game career at South Croydon in the Eastern Football League as well as spending time in the TAC Cup with
the Eastern Ranges.
Jones form in his inaugural NEAFL Northern Conference season, as well as a 30 possession game in the FOXTEL Cup when the Tigers took on North Adelaide at AAMI
Stadium has been rewarded with nomination for the NAB AFL Draft Combine to be
held in October this year.
Many a good judge believes that Jones possesses that x factor required and has AFL
traits now being heavily scrutinised through second tier competitions like the NEAFL
and FOXTEL Cup.
In fact 14 players in all from nine competing clubs within the FOXTEL Cup have been
nominated to participate in either the National or State Combines including Jones’
Labrador team mates Steve Wrigley and Queensland Scorpion Tom Fields. Jones has
played all fi fteen games for the Tigers in 2011 but perhaps played his best one last
weekend in the clubs harrowing two point loss to Southport at Cooke-Murphy.
Racking up over 30 possessions and running hard forward of the ball Jones also
chipped in with three goals including a classic stoppage goal from a boundary throw in
to put the Tigers back in front deep into the fi nal quarter.
One gets the feeling a copy of the DVD of the Tigers v Sharks game might fi nd its way into recruiting departments around the
countryside as the football world fi nds a bit more about the Jones boy from Labrador

I wouldn't get to excited by the Rioli training news. I think the name adds hype and with hype comes over expectations.
He was nominated for the 2010 draft and was overlooked by 18 clubs. That's the main thing to remember. He's ok skilled and somewhat versatile, but unless he's improved out of sight in 12 months, he will only be a middle of the road player in the VFL.
Having said that, i wish him well. Will be a decent replacement for J.Hoegel (sp?) if the rumours of him leaving are true.

No. Not every player nominated themself for the draft. Paul Puopolo didn't nominate himself for the draft until 2011 and something tells me David Mirra didn't nominate until 2011 either?

I would classify Mirra as being overlooked by AFL clubs a few times. If an AFL club had shown interest, wouldn't they have nominated?
I get your point, Rioli probably won't turn out to be another Isaac Smith (probably a better example than Mirra), but if he turns out to be another Mirra, then Box Hill will have done well!

For Box Hill’s latest recruit Will Johnson, the 2012 season represents an opportunity to experience a completely new football environment as well as relaunch his AFL dream.
Currently sidelined following a shoulder reconstruction in September last year, the former St Kilda-listed utility is hopeful of joining the Hawk’s main group in pre-season in the next six weeks.
In a major tick for Box Hill’s culture and facilities, Johnson said he knocked back offers from other VFL and WAFL clubs before signing on at City Oval.

Musto's Pre Season Diary 3
Thursday, 9 February 2012
Well 2012 here we come! Only two weeks until our first practice match against Williamstown on Friday 24 February at Whitten Oval. I’m sure you are looking forward to footy getting back up and running as much as I am. A lot has happened since my last diary with new recruits, pre-season camp along with the continued grind of the pre season a big feature.
First off lets have a look at some new faces:
Daniel Pratt – Pratty joins us from North Melbourne. He had a fantastic AFL career spanning 11 years and notching up 119 games (3 for Brisbane). He brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership. Having spent time as Vice Captain and in the leadership group at North Melbourne he is a great acquisition to our club. At 185cm and 95kg we would expect him to play a key position down back but if required can definitely play through the midfield.
Danny Hughes – Danny joins us from a year at WAFL club Subiaco but prior to this spent 4 years on Melbourne’s list. He definitely has put himself in a great position to have an outstanding year with a solid pre-season at St Kilda. His endurance/speed combo along with his jumping ability will see him as a vital asset roaming around half-forward this year. At 186cm and 85kg he is a great size and we look forward to him kicking some goals for the Hawks this year.
Will Johnson – Will joins us from 2 years on St Kilda’s list. He could be considered very unlucky to get the axe from the Saints at the end of last year after debuting mid season. He still has the fire in the belly to get back to the next level and I’m sure once he has recovered from his recent shoulder operation will show that he is capable. At 191cm and 91kg we see Will playing his best footy as a key forward.
Pre-Season Camp
On Friday 3 February all the boys travelled down to the YMCA facility on Smiths Beach at Phillip Island. It was an intense three days packed with a great mix of conditioning, footy skills, theory and not to mention the most important reason for the camp… bonding!
Damien Carrol, Ben Griffen and Steward Ward put together and co-ordinated an sensational camp that will hopefully set up our 2012 season. We were split into six groups with points were awarded for each activity over the duration of the camp.

2012 Recruits: Marc Lock
Friday, 10 February 2012
AS THE inaugural captain of the Gold Coast Suns, Marc Lock will always hold a place in the history of the AFL’s 17th side.
But having been delisted by the Queensland club at the end of their first season in the AFL, the 20-year-old is intent on becoming more than the answer to trivia questions by rebuilding his career at Box Hill.
The hard-working midfielder was part of the Suns’ first ever AFL side that suffered a humbling loss to Carlton in round two last season.
But he endured a frustrating year in 2011 from that point on, dropped from the Suns’ side for their second game of the season before seeing out the year in the North East Australian Football League.
Lock said his time with the Suns had only fuelled his determination to make it back onto an AFL list.

I've looked at the changes to the list and believe our recruits will more than cover our losses. A total of 19 players on the 2011 list have moved on including the following 13 players who played senior football:
Sam Gibson [19 games, 58 votes in B & F]
Jarrad Boumann [19 games, 42 votes]
Haydn Kiel [ 19 games, 41 votes]
Ryan Jackson [17 games, 36 votes]
Brad Neil [14 games, 23 votes]
Adam Pattison [12 games, 28 votes]
Jayden Hoegel [11 games, 14 votes]
Shaun Pollard [9 games, 13 votes]
Leigh Kitchin [4 games, 4 votes]
Kris Nye [3 games, 3 votes]
Dylan Van Unen [3 games, 2 votes]
Jackson Sketcher [2 games, 3 votes]
Ben Kennedy [2 games, 0 votes]
Using a criterion of a minimum average of two votes in the B & F per game I rate Gibson, Boumann, Kiel, Jackson and Pattison as key contributors in 2011 and players who we will need to adequately replace in order to improve. I'm confident we will cover the losses as follows:
Sam Gibson - Taylor Gilchrist [10 games, 17 votes] missed the first half of 2011 due to injury, improved every game & fitter in 2012 and Matt Jones.
Jarrad Boumann - Marc Lock and Max Otten
Haydn Kiel - Daniel Pratt and Beau Muston who didn't play a game in 2011
Ryan Jackson - Danny Hughes and Matt Scott
Adam Pattison - Will Johnson and Tom Gordon.
In addition the team will be strengthened by the improvement from the 10 young players who played senior football in 2011. Third year players Dave Mirra [18 games, 51 votes ... a very big ask], Luke Andrews [15 games, 30 votes], Michael Thompson [3 games, 2 votes], Jayden Cass [3 games, 2 votes] and Liam Tobin [3 games, 1 vote]. Second year players Tim Northe [9 games, 15 votes, Sam Cust [6 games, 7 votes], Ben Monkhurst [3 games, 1 vote], Joshua Ralph [2 games, 5 votes] and Xavier Murphy [2 games, 1 vote].
Finally every year a couple of previously listed players and recruits step up into the senior team. Dale Bleach has again done a wonderful job recruiting and hopefully 2012 will see a change of luck for the Mustang Hawkers with no pre-season injuries to our key recruits.
I'm very excited about our prospects in 2012.

Boumann and Pattison haven't moved on as such, they've upgraded. Depending on how HFC see Boumann he may or may not play prodominantly for BHH and Pattison will require injuries to other HFC rucks to be playing AFL level. Patto should be playing at least as many games for BHH in 2012 as he did in 2011.

I expect we will get a fair amount of games out of those two but some other really good signings. Game one is underway and only a trial but will give DC a few ideas about where we stand I would think.. Williamstown good stiff opposition

Just back from Whitten oval. Would guess that we lost by 6 to 8 goals. All Box Hill listed players while Willie had a few Bulldogs listed players running around. The Development Squad game was just about to start and the list looked like half the side were top up listed players..There were a handful of Box Hill listed players sitting out both games...roll on next week

Pretty fair post NSY.
Believe the actual scores to be Willy 14.10.90 to BHH 3.2.20
Our better players were David Mirra - makes a contest everytime
Tim Northe and Aaron Johns with a mention for both Brent Wallace and Captain Musto.
Otherwise we were outplayed by WB players and our lack of height showed out greatly.
Hopefully next week against Sandy we will have a few HFC listed players in our team giving us some height and bulk.

Pretty rough for Box Hill when Hawthorn has an intra-club on the same day.

Williamstown Vs Boxhill Hawks 24 February 2012 at Whitten Oval
Sorry for the lateness in my reply guys didn't get on last night. On a hot day where the temperature soared we got an absolute shellacking.
The score
Williamstown 1.2.8 6.5.41 10.6.66 14.10.94
Box Hill 0.1.1 1.1.7 2.1.13 3.2.20
The game was tight early as Box Hill held firm in the first quarter in defence but got blown away as the game progressed. I’ll give you a rundown of some of our better players
Tim Northe: Was probably best on for Boxhill played in the middle and fought on manfully well above his weight division. His attack on the ball was good but lacked size and got pushed aside often especially when attempting to tackle.
Aaron Johns: Refer above got a bit of the pill but too diminutive to do anything else.
Beau Muston: Who has lots heaps of weight over the preseason. He has some of his zip back (caveat still runs in straight lines) played back to cover the taller players in the Willi forward line in the first qtr did well but then was moved to the midfield and then as a tagger onto the dangerous Zeph Skinner
David Mirra: Who to most box hill watchers is one of their favourite players. He played back most of last year started in the forward line this year and provided a contest. By the end of the second he had moved back down to defence as we were leaking goals down there. Looking forward to another good year from this guy never disappoints.
James Wilsen: Has some size and strength and battled on well in defence. A defence too be truthful was under siege for the entire game. He will add much needed height in defence for the forthcoming season not overly quick but reads the play well.
Josh Ralph: Poor guy played in the ruck and is just too short. He tries hard never gave up and gave his all.
Tom Gordon: a new recruit has some size about him and has a good pair of hands but lacks pace. Took some good marks especially one low down on the lead and kicked a goal from it.
Danny Hughes: Not that he was one of our better players but started like a house on fire he was everywhere in that first qtr probably best on ground after the first but faded badly out of the game to be hardly sighted by the end.
As I made comment during the match it was like watching the Fitzroy football club go around before it folded. Why because we lacked not only height but weight we made some skill errors and turned the ball over by over possessing it. Our midfielders and KPs were just being pushed around like the kids they were. Williamstown had a mature side out there with a few WB players. They played the better more structured football and they deserved the win.
Better player for Willi included
Tory Dickson: who played in the middle and racked it up along with 3 goals to boot.
Ayce Cordy: played in the forward line and kicked a couple but didn’t really light it up just too tall most times.
Andrew Hooper: also had a day out kicking 3 looks like he will have a good year this year.
Lin Jong: Had my eye on this kid is a good size and has a turn of speed got a bit of the pill as well.
Jarrad Grant: It was interesting to see him out there playing at CHB. For the most part he looked disinterested perhaps because the ball was coming down there.

Did Max Otten, Daniel Pratt & Kalem Post play TFP? I'm assuming Will Johnson & Matt Scott aren't ready to go yet?

Yes Max Otten and Pratt played but didn't offer much unfortunately. We were outplayed in just about every department a young and inexperienced team
Went down after work and caught some of both games.
Seriously hot, even at that time of day. I'd give them all a medal just for competing. And about five Box Hill guys, not playing, were doing their own fitness session, including plenty of running.
Nice comeback by Musto, considering it was this time last year he injured his ankle.
Pratt's experience and size might be handy, although he looks a touch slow. Will have a little trouble getting used to Pratt as 'one of us'.

Just one final note while i think of it.
There has been quite a few changes in personnel down at box hill the new faces will have to get used to the place the players and the game plan this may take time besides that i wonder how many of them are going to make the cut once the Hawthorn listed players are added to the lineup

Well beaten but any promising signs that might get topped up with a few Hawthorn boys

Looks like the player profiles list on the BHH website might be it although I believe they can have 45 so maybe a few to be added.

Heard a bit more about trial last week. Not only did Willie run out 12 Bulldogs they had about 10 on the bench to Box Hill 3 on bench in super hot temperatures. They ran out fresh players at each interval so the score might have actually not been too bad.
The AIS game looks great for the young blokes
