Ahhh, the old quadrophonic vinyl - now there's a throwback to the seventies!
I got a quadrophonic CD-4 vinyl version of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, which I also found in the bargain bin at a second hand record shop almost 10 years ago. Unfortunately it is extremely quiet - gotta turn up the volume to hear anything at all. Is this a problem specific to those old CD-4 recordings?
Incidentally, I reckon "Tubular Bells" should have been in my original five albums. Not sure what I'd displace for it though.

My 5
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd: I've always thought Wish You Were Here was an attempt to recreate Dark Side. They never quite got the 'feel' back.
Heroes - David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust is tempting but I think Bowie was more in control of himself on this album
Crime of the Century - Supertramp: Starts with the sublime "Dreamer", "Bloody Well Right", "School" and "Hide In Your Shell". Tails off a little on side 2 but the memories still linger.
Seconds Out - Genesis: A live album from the time that Genesis (more particularly Phil Collins) had heart and soul in their music. They have the crowd from the start and keep a firm hold on them. The musicianship is outstanding.
A Night at the Opera & A Day at the Races - Queen: Can't separate these two. Some classic and well known tunes and tucked away gems like "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy".

Of course, I could also have put in Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf just gets the joke and there's some great rocking and great lines in the songs.
Also missed Born to Run, and a few others from the time when Springsteen was good..

I see many of you with fine taste have rightly listed
THE CLASH LONDON CALLING
as one of the albums of the '70's.
As an interesting aside Rolling stone magazine voted this the best Album of the '80's even though it was released in
JULY 1979!!!
At one stage in my life my top five would have being something like
ATLANTIC CROSSING ROD STEWART
ARRIVAL ABBA
LIFE SHERBERT
HAT TRICK AMERICA
BAT OUT OF HELL MEATLOAF (HANG ON,I STILL LIKE THAT ONE!!!)

Can some one please explain to me why The Clash are so highly regarded, especially in Britain. Their music is dull, unimaginative, and the album mentioned above would have to be one of the worst "Punk" albums I've ever had the misfortune of listening to.

I'll give it go;) For starters I don't think too many people consider "London Calling" a 'punk' album(whilst there is a couple of 'punk' songs on it) as such. If you want 'punk' Clash you'd go for the first two Clash LPs "The Clash" and "Give 'em enough rope".
The main reason IMO that "London Calling" gets such a good rap from critics is that it covers so many different musical styles (London Calling, Clampdown - Punk; Cadillac - Rock'n'Roll; Rudie Can't Fail - Reggae; Train in Vain - Pop etc) in one neat little two album package. Me I just like it. I remember hearing it for the first time in late 79 and being blown away by it. It wasn't a breath of fresh air it was a hurricane.
As for their music being dull and unimaginative that's your opinion ,and you are entitled to it. You like Blondie, and to me they were nothing more than a top 40,singles orientated band. That's my opinion and I am entitled to it. I am a little older than you and whether or not that accounts for the difference in what we think or just the fact that music is mostly down to personal taste I don't know.
Either way if you think The Clash are dull and unimaginative you are very hard to please.:)

Certainly very accessible, although I would like to hear the songs from Parallel Lines (one of MY favourite albums) played in a small club at the time of release. I'd say they would have had more edge than they do on vinyl/CD.

Agree with the Leapster - I've never really considered it a punk album in the traditional sense, such as the Pistols, Kennedys, Black Flag etc... London Calling always came across as more of a great pop album to me.
And why did it leave such a lasting impression with me.
Well for one thing, I still roll it out quite regularly. It tends to be a very safe "go to" album when I'm unsure what I feel like listening to.
It's also got, as Leaping Lindner so eloquently put it, the album has such a vast array of musical styles - no two songs are even vaguely similar.
And finally, I guess it just reminds me of a being a 15 year old having a wild time getting wasted around at some poor souls house while their parents were away for the weekend.
Agree with everyone about London Calling-A pearler of an album.
My sis actually bought it on vinyl and kept playing it .
I wasn't really into that style but this album is the sort of one that anyone would like.Real positive vibe too.
Buy this cd if you've never heard it-you won't be sorry.
Get it for cheap as chips these days.:D
Not a filler song on the whole thing.

Favorite 70's records from my collection - in no particular order:
Rush 2112
Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo
Frampton Comes Alive
Led Zeppelin IV
Van Halen
The Clash 'London Calling' wasn't released in the US until January 1980, and that's probably why Rolling Stone is ****ed up on the matter.

Nup. Haven't listened to Rumours for a good 15 years. Not into it these days. But as a kid growing up in the 70s it was huge and as a teenager in the 80s I really liked. One of those rare albums where no only is every song a winner but the album gels well and really communicates the times.
I was about 6 when it came out and wasn't really aware. It wasn't until I listened to it (and got well into it) in the mid 80s that I remembered all the songs and it tok me back to that 70s feeling. Was very differnet to the 80s feeling. Much more relaxed and way cooler. The whole 80s thing with music and fashion sucked super d1ck for me.

always though that the Macs "Tusk" was early 80's.
The Carole King album would be up there in the poll and Blondies "Parellel Lines"
But my favourite and still is:All Things Must Pass. I can hear shades of classic Floyd here before classic Floyd. I know the production may date a few songs but it is a great album and especially the remastered 2001 edition with bonus tracks.
