The Exchange Period
Commences with the "Trade Day" talks at Optus Oval involving all clubs on Monday October 13th and concludes at 2.00pm on Friday October 17th.
Important Rules
The following key points of the AFL Rules in regard to the exchange period:
- A club may exchange a player or players on its primary list for a player or players on the primary list of another club
- A club may exchange a player or players on its primary list for the draft selection or draft selections of another club
- A club may exchange a player or players on its primary list for a combination of a player, players, draft selection or draft selections of another club.
- No more then five players shall be exchanged by any one club prior to a National Draft
- No more than three players from a club shall be exchanged in any one transaction or series of related or interdependent transactions
- Where an exchange occurs between no more than two clubs, the exchange must include a player (ie. Clubs may not make a straight swap of draft picks)
- A club shall not be entitled to exchange a players received in any exchange until the following year
- Where the exchange of a player(s) and draft selection(s) involves more than two clubs, the exchange between two clubs involved in the transaction can be for a Draft selection or selections only, provided that the remaining exchanges involved in the transaction include the transfer of a Player or Players. (ie. In a multiple club deal involve players and picks, the paperwork to complete part of this trade my involve a pick for pick swap among clubs, provide other parts over the overall agreement include the transfer of players)
- A club may exchange a draft selection that is has received from another club, provided that the selection is not traded directly back to that club.
Lodgement of Lists
All Clubs must lodge a Primary List with the AFL on October 31st. This list is a maximum of 35 players and will include Rookies promoted to the senior list, any Father/Son recruits and second year rookies. (A Club may retain a maximum of three rookie players on tis Rookie List for a second season).
All Clubs must then lodge a revised Primary List with the AFL on November 14th. This will enable the Draft Selection Order to be established. Each Club must have a minimum of three selections in the National Draft on Saturday November 22nd.
Any players delisted by a Club (ie no longer on the Primary List lodged with the AFL on November 14th) must nominate for the Draft by Wednesday November 19th to be eligible for the National Draft the following Saturday.
