I was wondering if anyone else is into the NHL as much as me. I actually follow the NHL closer than Aussie Rules (just).
My boys (da Wings) are coming good again and should give the cup a shake, but I still think the Avs are the team to beat. Sakic, Forsberg, Bourque, Roy, the list goes on and on, they are really strong this year.
I noticed a few of you have favourite teams, so join in and let's get this great sport some more recognition.

Joffa, I have read your posts with some enjoyment, but this beats the cake. I don't know whats up your arse lately, but it seems to be causing you some grief.
If you don't want to join a discussion then just stay out of it. I'm really cut that you don't like my topic.... :(

ps. that last bit was sarcasm...I thought I should explain it for you.

I have been into the NHL since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I grew up in a hockey state (Wisconsin) which strangely enough still doesn't have an NHL team.

I always wanted to play the sport but wasn't a very good skater and my parents feared for my personal safety.

Since I never had a local team to follow, I started following the Philadelphia Flyers. It was basically because I hated the Edmonton Oilers and I wanted someone to beat them in the Cup Finals, and it seemed like Philadelphia was always the opponent, so I started going for them.

Around that time, the Flyers had a promising young goalie from Sweden named Pelle Lindbergh who got killed in an auto accident.

Because of that, I followed them even more closely after that and for whatever odd reason, it has stuck to this day.

They seem to be somewhat of a cursed organization, between that and other untimely player deaths (Dmitri Tertyshny, Yanek Dupre) and the whole Lindros saga.

I have a lot of respect for Detroit and Colorado. I absolutely cannot stand the New Jersey Devils. I LOATHE the Devils.

I follow the NHL loosely. I go for Pittsburgh and from what i've seen they've been going all right this year.

Go Mario Lemiux, hes the man.

Big news today is that Rob Blake just got traded to Colorado. This now gives them Blake and Borque as their main D men, plus a power play of those two plus Sakic, Forsberg and Hejduk. That's an all-star line up in one power play. I think this should just about be enough to get them all the way.
WCE, the Penguins are doing ok this year, especially since Mario's return, but his back is causing problems and his ice time is being cut back. They are still a chance to go all the way though.
Stealth, I hate to say it, but I think the Devils will play the Avs in the Cup finals this year. Also, Lindros was close to being traded to Toronto this week, but the deal fell through, so Eric still has nowhere to play.

I think it probably will be Devils-Avs. The Flyers have a mental block when playing against New Jersey. No team matches up worse against the Debbies.

I wish that the Flyers would just trade the bum, cut their losses and get some new players in. They have been missing a sniper and a good puck-carrying defenseman for years and refuse to go out and get them. Instead they insist on getting more mucking and grinding slow Canadian forwards.

If Philly doesn't win a cup in the next 3-4 years, Clarke must go. I will give him credit for finally hiring Bill Barber as coach though, that was a good idea.

Santos, how did you get interested in the NHL?. There is hardly any coverage of this sport in Australia. I would like to hear how you got interested in this sport. It's not really that big in the US either it would probably rank as the 4th or 5th major sport there.

I love the NFL and I got interested in that from watching Super Bowls on TV as a youngster.

Carb, my love affair with the NHL started in 1987 when I lived in the States for about 8 months and started watching some games on tv.
Then EA Sports bought out the NHL series of games for Sega and I was totally hooked.
The lack of coverage has been very frustrating, but the Internet has enabled me to keep up with the goings on in the NHL. I now play five fantasy hockey leagues, including two in which I am the GM of a team and must carry out trades, drafting and keep within salary caps.
Fox sports now have one NHL game every week which has helped to feed my addiction.
I think, given a chance, that ice hockey would take off here too. I mean it's tough and fast, plus they encourage biffo. I mean what other sport can you see guys going at it and only get five minutes as a penalty?
I think another reason I took to it, could be that it doesen't have so many stoppages that seem to plague other sports popular in America ( I know it's really Canadian).

Big news today. Chris Pronger, Blues captain and last years MVP, took a slapshot on the arm and broke his forearm. He is out for the rest of the season, severely denting St Louis' chances for the cup.

New York Rangers winger, Theo Fleury, has been admitted to rehab to recover from a substance abuse program. Don't know what the substance was, but pro sports claims another victim.
This guy has an $8 mill/year contract. Surely he has better things to spend his money on, but then again maybe not

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd bring it back up instead of starting a new one.

I've noticed many people around Melbourne in NHL jumpers. Roughly 90% of them are Detroit; occasionally I see New Jersey, Colorado, Anaheim and Philadelphia.

My question is, where do they buy them? I've never seen them for sale here in Australia. Do they all buy them or order them from overseas or does someplace have them around (hopefully not jacked up too much). I didn't bring my orange Philly one with me and was thinking about looking around for a new one (probably a Flyers 3rd - the black one).

Where should I look?
