First the good...

What about the bad?

As much as I like punk, the current batch of singers are crap...silly nasally voices mean reaching for the remote now.

Chester Bennington
50 Cent
Fred Durst - this cretin should just stick to making money and keeping his mouth shut.

My god daughter listens to this (her words) R&B bloke who sounds like he's gargling paint through an ill fitting muffler, Nelly I think his name is?

I think Fred Durst has an excellent voice, it's just hardly ever on show because of the type of music he performs with Limp Bizkit - I remember him performing a softer song on that concert for Sep 11 and he sounded awesome.

Ja Rule.
If the ****er would keep to "rapping" instead of trying to "sing", he'd still be the worst, but only just over the likes of Fred Durst and Chester Bennington...

Ill put in another nomination for Scott Cain and throw in one for Britney Spears (not the ive heard her actually sing very often - but seriously, who can get as far as she did without ever singing live, its madness)

Adalita.

And once upon a time, i'd have agreed. But i seriously recommend you reassess based on her recent efforts (last 2 albums). The transformation is stunning (either that or her producers are masters with pitch enhancement software!)

Anyway, Billy Corgan's voice makes me have visions of the baby in "Who Killed Roger Rabbit?". Painful.

And Anthony Kiedis' voice only sometimes threatens to fall into key with what he is "singing" to.

Tongue in cheek Charlie :D the only thing I was defending is the fact that he never considered himself a singer, but a poet & that's how I view him, gawd, if I was to buy his records for his singing feats, let's say I would have about 20 less albums in my collection. ;)

Squeak it comes down to the same thing , people have diferent ideas as to what a good singer sounds like, I think Farnham sounds like a sackful of drowning kittens, therefore I say he has a crappy voice, which is my opinion. :p

Perfect for the type of music, but he can barely speak intellegably let alone sing.

So are we only meant be judging singers on technical ability, and not feel? Otherwise nobody really has the right to criticize anyone else's choice. Celine Dion can 'technically' sing, but personally i'd rather listen to a drowning cat, so IMO she is a crap singer.

Ja Rule without a doubt is the worst voice in history!!
Saw him on channel V doing a live gig and it was embarrassing. His voice is very poor.
There are different sounding voices for different styles of music but this guy just sounds really bad.
As for Bob Dylan yes he doesn't have the smooth sound of many rock singers but his raspy voice is full of heart and soul and does work in well with his musical style and lyrics.

No doubt about it i has to be Mark Knoppfler live. His voice was the driver for the music industry to develop technology to improve a persons voice for recording.

Therefore Mark Knoppler is to blame for all the digitally enhanced music we put up with today.

I agree with you there on Rob Thomas. Cannot stand Matchbox 20 but do acknowledge that he can sing.

But have you ever heard Axel Rose try and sing live?

B-A-D.

Rob Thomas has too much vibrato in his voice for my taste(I cringe when I hear him sing and Axel sounds like the sound a cat makes when you step on it's tail.

My opinion though and I'm sure people h8 the singers I love such as Jeff Buckley,Kate Bush,Chris Cornell,Maynard James Keenan,
Billy Holiday,Peter Gabriel,Billy Corgan(I'm Sure Corgan would irritate alot with his nasally style but I love the way he uses his voice to it's fullest potential with breath and dynamics.)

P.S. Meatloaf is another singer I wouldn't throw on my stereo if you paid me .Hmmmm (10 grand perhaps)
:D
