In a surprising twist to this weeks trade period, Richmond football director, Greg Miller today announced the signing of seven ex Hammerheads players for the next three years.
‘I did the maths last night and realised that although we had 28 contracted players for 2004 we only had $50000 left on the salary cap. I spoke to Danny and he thought it might be a good idea if we got some extra players just in case there were some injuries. I immediately thought of my ex-players at the Hammerheads. They’re a good bunch of lads and whilst they’re skill levels might not be up to AFL standard I’m sure they will put in the effort required of an AFL footballer. And basically they are only replacing Biddiscombe, King, Hilton, Nicholls etc so its really a like-for-like trade.
Solly and Richo have offered to give them free meals at their café at Docklands and Wayne has said beers will be on the house all season if things get tight money wise. They’ll be on about $8000 per year which is just a bit less than the dole so things shouldn’t be too bad.’
Miller also mentioned due to the salary cap situation, Richmond would not be participating in this years draft.
‘We’ve never had that much luck there anyway and who wants to develop players when you can buy them 3 years later.’
