View Full Version : Current 24. Jed Bews (2012-)
In the first action of trade week, Carlton and Geelong also secured father-son prospects in this morning’s bidding process.
But bidding for both Dylan Buckley (son of Carlton legend Jim) and Jed Bews (son of Geelong legend Andrew) was less of a war and more of a formality after both the Blues and Cats secured the pair with their last picks of this year’s draft.

Very pleased, Reading Andrew's article recently in the Addy i think he'll be wrapt he is staying a local lad. GReat opportunity to join a club at the height of it's powers, and the ability to develop youngsters. Jed will be at a great place to learn his craft.

Good news. If that's right and we used our last round pick, he surely can't be bad value at pick 102!
Great get for the club, prove the naysayers wrong, you're at the greatest club in the land, you can be what you want to be!

Will be highly amusing if he turns out to be an absolute surprise gun along the lines of Ablett and Scarlett. Then we can look forward to many years of Bigfooty fans and bias commentators raving on about how unfair the F/S rule has been for Geelong.

Draft combine measurements would be more recent I'd think?

Absolutely this. If he is ever part of a Geelong Premiership can we just get all the "* flag" and "tainted premiership" out of the way now?
Sad cases.

Haven't seen him go around but the fact there were no expressions of interest in him doesn't inspire confidence. Still, as you say, for pick 102 we're not risking much.

Looks pretty good for a seventeen year old, think we'll all be better positioned to judge after a couple of seasons.
Hope he still puts on a couple for cms and he'll be a nice mid size like Duncan.

Can't imagine someone like _Me or some other posters here would be happy about this pick-up.
The people I mean are the ones who have said that they wouldn't want any sons of Gary Ablett jnr playing for Geelong, since they would be sons of a traitor and a "Judas".
But, don't forget, Andrew Bews left Geelong to play for Brisbane. However, he has been embraced back at Geelong like nothing happened, and his son has been picked up.
That just shows that Geelong Football Club have more maturity than some of the posters here. I'm sure if, in the future, Gazza's son or son/s are availbale for selection, I would have no problems wanting us to get him over stinking Gold Coast, that's for sure. I hope, by then, most of you will put your grudge against Ablett aside as well.

I stand to be corrected on this but Geelong offloaded quite a few players mid 90s because they simply couldn't afford to pay them. Damian Bourke and Shane Hamilton also went to the Bears, and a couple of others went to St Kilda/North/Essendon. I would venture that those players didn't approach their destination clubs offseason in clandestine hotel meetings either - but past is past, you're just as guilty of keeping this shit going as _Me_ is by bringing it up. Speaking for myself I can live more comfortably with Ablett leaving because our game style now has no place for the way he plays comparative to the salary he thinks he's worth. We proved this year that we don't need a 600-700 disposal mid to win a flag.

I hear a lot and only good things about Jed. I was just wondering what aspects of his game made him be a late pick. Im not saying he is bad because he is picked up late, as I think teams dont want to bid on a player in the 3rd round this early before the draft.
From what I have heard.
Good:
Kick
Decision making
Speed, agility
Bad:

Good height as well.
Possible backline in 2-4 years time???
Guthrie*, Gillies, Bews
Hunt, Taylor, Smedts
*bit uncertain if he will be back pocket.

He's really skinny and will probably need a few preseasons before he can play in the AFL. Clubs seem to be looking for ready made kids with early picks, which is quite a rare thing - not many can be like Joel Selwood or Jack Darling and have an impact in their first season with the big boys. I'd expect to see a lot of the 20-21 year old talent from VFL, WAFL, SANFL get a shot this year with GWS having the best picks.

Where's Mackie and Lonergan?
Also, Bathie may be a ruck but has an excellent defensive side to his game. Could play anywhere on the ground.

Yeah almost all the player vital stats on the site are old and outdated. If you read the article on the site it gives his draft combine height & weight, Mick Turner also describes him as a replacement for Enright one day, which adds credibility to the new measurement.
so the club is incorrect on their website ,, 181 & 73 ?
That's a big disparity, wonder if someone could check on that and atually get it right, seems silly no one knows his size for sure!
In VFL footage saw him close to Guthrie, looked about the same size, but impossible to tell being a broard shot of them, Guthrie's listed at 186, but would be interesting to know the facts.
He might've been that size last year, being so young, can someone get it right?

Well spoken C71.
I agree, whilst I did have a slight grudge for Jnr early on, I think that has faded and whilst I don't like how he went about the contract negotiations, to be totally realistic he just couldn't turn that offer down. The amount of money that was given was ridiculous and it is enough to set him and his family up for life. He will be welcomed back at the club at any time.
With Bews, I have heard some positive things, so I hope he learns and thrives at the club and makes a name for himself.

He's young and small and still learning his craft.
Its just he has the best environment in which to do it.
As FS goes, he is probably in the best position of Ablett, Hawkins Blake et al in that the expectation on him is low. He will need probably 2 full preseasons to fill out but for pick 102 - her deserves the chance and the time.
Welcome and Go Catters......
Is Jed Bew a backman!! He's 17, great to see him at Geelong!!!
Hope he impresses in VFL, want to see him play AFL footy!
He's a quality athlete so if he can develop into half a player to go with it he'll end up better than at least 1/3rd of the players in this draft.
GFC site had Djerkurra listed at 186cm after we drafted him for friggan ages for what its worth.

And the players have nicknamed him "mouse". Hadn't thought about it previously but has his old man was rat it makes sense ...

Jed Bews, the son of Andrew Bews who will be officially drafted under the father-son rule next week, had his first training session with the group yesterday where he was given the nickname "Mouse".

With a name like that his nickname has to be Jedi doesnt it? I can see myself in a few years urging him to use the Jedi mind trick on the Umps.

Player statistics
Former club:Geelong Falcons/Leopold
DOB:14/12/1993
Height:182cm

Player assessment
Jed is a different player to his father Andrew, with Falcons region manager Michael Turner casting him more in the mould of Corey Enright while the draft combine was on. He ran a sub-3s 20m sprint at the combine and ranked inside the top 10 in the repeat sprint testing
