Welcome to North Melbourne- Tom Curran!
http://www.kangaroos.com.au/Portals/0/CURRAN-Tom-2011(1).jpg
Height: 195cm
Weight: 86kg
DOB: 18/9/1993
Club: Oakleigh Chargers

Son of former Hawthorn dual-premiership player Peter Curran and relative of North Melbourne life member Bat Curran.

dlv2Fe6J740

Known for: Very Good to elite hands, genuine key forward prospect, hard working, well built, good kick, reads the play well, can play back, forward or ruck.

Questionable attributes: Questionable pace (reports this may be exaggerated), poor carnival (playing second forward to Patton didnt help)

KEVIN SHEEHAN SAYS:

“Represented Vic Metro in three games at the Under 18 Championships. He is a hard working key position player, son of former Hawk Peter Curran. Is very well built, a good kick and loves the hard contests.”

On not being picked F/S by Hawthorn:

''He (Hawthorn recruiter Graham Wright) left the house and it sunk in that 'oh … they don't want me'.''
''For the first five minutes it was pretty disappointing. 'I felt excited going into the meeting and it didn't work out how I wanted it to, but I tried to cop it on the chin, and literally within five minutes I think I was starting to feel more excited about it. I could see the positives,''

''The way I see it, 17 doors open up now and only one door closes. If I get picked up now, people externally will see it as me being good enough to be drafted, not just look at it from the father-son angle. I think that could be good.''

Drew's Natural Successor?: ''We need to start preparing to replace our key forwards. We would like Drew Petrie to play forever but we were really conscious we needed a big strong key forward and we think Tom fits that bill beautifully.'' - Brad Scott

Bryce Lewis says: "He's a genuine key-position player who can play forward and back. He's competitive and reads the game well. He's a natural footballer."

Jumper Number:Tom has been presented with the number 30 guernsey, most recently worn by Daniel Pratt, First worn by Jack Lynch and previously worn by such players as: Scott Welsh, Michael Martyn and Les Foote.

Did he test poorly or just not test at all due to injury?

EDIT: Just checked. He didn't do any of the physical testing. There's only height, weight, hand span, skinfolds and arm length.

Even if he isn't the most athletically gifted, it is worth noting that Drew Petrie (who hopefully Curran will one day take over) finished 2nd last in our recent time trials. He's done OK despite this...

The important thing is he makes up for that shortcoming with other strengths. He may never be seriously quick, but if he can improve his tank and get stronger in the body, he's halfway there. Seems to possess plenty of natural ability.

Any links? Need some more info for his profile.

Cheers.

Am willing to do toms game reviews if noone else claims. I had Norris last year

The speed thing is a furphy. Curran was injured, first with a back, then with a hot spot in his navicular during the TAC finals. In the Vic Metro vs SA (or maybe metro v country) game they had the trackers on and his terminal speed (top speed) was the highest on the ground. You guys are lucky he didn't test. In the 10 games he played for the Chargers he finished 3rd in the B&F tied with Toby Greene.

I think you have a considerable bargain.

Thanks for the info Yabby, have read a few times that the 'questions on his pace' were greatly exaggerated. Will be interesting to see how he goes completely free of injury, I hear he played most of last year with a bandaged knee?

He's only just walked through the doors at Aegis Park, but draftee Tom Curran can already sense a bright future at North Melbourne.

"It's an awesome club, good list... young list and promising times ahead so it's really exciting," Curran told kangaroos.com.au.

The 18 year-old key-position player was selected with North's second pick on Thursday night and has quickly embraced his new home.

"I'm settling in well. The players are so welcoming so they make it easy for us.

Drew, meet your new shadow.

He looks like he has the scope to develop into one seriously big, powerful unit.

Hopefuly his footy develops, becaus he's going to be able to break some packs open at 6ft 5 and 100 kilos.

It's fair to say he's won me.

QFT.

He was absolutely outstanding for Oakleigh, and was a class above imo when he was there.

Finishing 3rd in that B&F in a fairly star studded lineup from that amount of games is a fair indication.

Very impressive. The enthusiasm he conveys reminds me of the early interviews with JZ down at Wilsons Prom. Quality kid, going by that alone, and a very good long term prospect. I went to the same school as his dad (I'm a few years younger than Peter though) and well remember watching him plying his trade for the 1st XVIII prior to heading to the Hawks. If young Tom can eek out a career like his dad's we'll have done extremely well.

Any updates on the boy? Is he still having his postponed 'pre-season'? Likely to play some VFL any time soon? Hopefully he can get out on the park sooner rather than later, would be a shame if his AFL career is stalled early through injury like it was for Aaron Black.
