I read in 'The Age' that the Saints have agreed to trade our second rnd pick (23) for Jason Gram. I don't know too much about him could someone let me know what he is like??
Who gets out of this deal the best??

Who gets out of this deal the best??St Kilda. Undoubtedly. Gram I believe was pick 19 in the 2001 draft, he is a better player now yet is going in exchange for pick 23 by all reports. It just doesn't add up

Maybe if they chucked in a player as well, like Reiwoldt, then we might be a bit chirpier

Hope there's an extremely good reason for clearing the lad. He was coming along at a fair enough rate for a 19 year old. Has tremendous athletic ability. Two years of developing the kid down the drain in one fell swoop. Let's pray draft pick no. 23 can play a bit.

I dread the future :( It's in many ways the nature of the beast. Look at what Craig Bolton has done with his career - all the best to Jason at the Saints ( has some company there with ex-Lions ) . How can you dread the future with 3 flags and a 21 yr old gun playing the hardest spot and on ballers like Black and Power and Charman ? These guys will be rock solid and hopefully more Qld based players will step up. I was upset when Molly left but that seems an eon ago. Now we can reflect on our amazing success and look forward to some more excitement as it seems the current squad really want more success and are hanging together.
I recall seeing posts in the past. "Oh no we've traded Matthew Clarke... Steven Lawrence... Molly Molloy....". I don't think we have been really hurt by a trade. Good luck to Jason, he deserves to play at the top level. Don't forget we still have Jared Brennan with more kilo's on his frame, Richard Hadley etc etc. Life goes on.

Does anyone think his clanger v. Freo a la Rhyce Shaw affected his confidence and outlook at all?

I agree - good luck to Gram.
Big deal, we can reflect on our success if we want. I'm looking ahead. And not just next year.
We'll lose White, Hart, Lynch, McRae and probably Pike in the next 1-2 years.
The "core" of our team (Leppa, Voss, Aka, Lappin, Scott's, Keating, Caracella, Michael) will be very late 20's-into their 30's within those 2 years as well. The core of this team was regarded as young a few years ago. Not anymore - they are ageing.
Who of the young brigade are bona-fide senior regulars in their own right? Charman (debateable if Mcdonald is fit), McGrath (I'm not convinced yet), Copeland (ditto), Power, Black, Brown.
Who is on the fringe who can step up? Notting? Shattock? Hadley? They've all been in the system for quite a few years, and are STILL on the fringe. Brennan? Looks a talent, admittedly.
Yes, I am looking forward to next year. After that, I fear a gulf, and I'm not convinced that our younger group of players can not only step up to account for this, but also to cover for the core, which will be on the wane IMO (if they aren't already), and will be finding it harder and harder to get on the park all the time.
Fair enough Bolton went - good on him.
We've traded Headland (under sufferance), Cupido and Gram away. THESE are the guys to fill the shoes of others.
My point is that our 22 WONT be anywhere near as strong in a few years. We might have plenty of "talented" guys with "potential" on our list, but our best 22 will drop away.
I hope I'm wrong.
Denno...as a Saints supporter, I wish I had your concerns. You've just won 3 in a row, and have retained your entire list except Gram, and you're odds on to make it 4 possibly 5 ...we just want 1, we're not that greedy, and we'd do anything, trade anyone to get it...I wouldn't worry about losing a 19 yr old, 2 game player.
btw...I've never seen the kid, whats he like and what was his terrible mistake vs Freo?

Excellent post, Denno.

But I can't say I noticed his seconds form tail off at all.

In an ideal world, we wouldn't have lost him. IMO, he's worth more than what we got.
Of course I'm rapt with 3 in a row (who wouldn't be!), and the chance to get another. I guess I'd like us to be sustaining our level as we go forward. Maybe I've been spoilt as a Lions supporter. Am I asking too much? (Probably) Is it unrealistic to expect us to stay at our current level? (yes). I'm concerned that we are sacrificing our long-term prospects for possible short-term
results.
To me, Gram was one of the guys to step up over the next 2 years - now we have to start again with a draft pick. That's a waste in my opinion.
Gram had about 10 mins in a game against Freo (in the last quarter). He tried to clear from defence, but got smothered by Longmuir, and J-Lo then went on and kicked a decisive goal from the resultant spill. Gram got dragged. We lost. If you want to see a flash of Gram brilliance, watch his debut game (the game before, against Melbourne from memory). Poise beyond his years (and experience).

the Richmond gamei think it may have been Denno...
how great was it....
our section was cheering so loud (or perhaps that was just me & Mr Ripper & Beausgirl coz we were all so proud when he got the 1st run on the park) & when he had that turn around handball through the middle which lead to a goal.. it was just magic.....
surely have some good ressies memories as well... like the kick which so was a goal which he convinced the goal umpire that it was a behind........

I know where you are coming from and I agree. Sure we have won 3 flags in a row, but I fear we will turn into be a basket case again mainly due to not developing the younger players.
Come 2005
Lynch, Hart, White, McRae and possibly Pike would have retired. How do we expect less than 5 game players to replace these blokes? Sure we have some fringe players but we will not be competitive in 2005 unless we bring more young blokes through next year. Keep refreshing players bodies, bringing in at least 1 bloke every week.
If Notting is benched for most a game, we drop him and bring in a first gamer or something and give the first gamer a taste at AFL level.
If we have an injury to say Pike, we don't bring in a fringe player, we bring in a young player.
We need to do this if we are to remain competitive 2005 onwards. At the moment trading young players is not helping our cause.
I don't want to see this club become a basketcase again and at the moment, it's heading that way unless we start playing young players next year.
Selwood, Corrie, Wright - all need to make their debut's next year without fail.
Weller needs to be played when Lynch doesn't travel. Not Bradshaw in that position (he'll be in the team already) but Weller. Someone young who can get more taste. Possibly Merrett.
We need at least 4 debut's next year and those players need to play more than one game next year. Some of them, if not all, preferably 5 games.

Certainly the selectors kept faith with the squad this year - and were rewarded - but Chris Scott, Marcus and Fly played pretty much on will power towards the end, and Vossy .. well, who knows. We need to develop these roles - cool HB sweepers and goal sneaks - as much as FF and onballers. But bring on the young ones and not die wondering.
