Apologies if this has been done before, but what's the most powerful song you've ever heard?

For me it would have to be 'Bad' or 'Running To Stand Still', two ballads by U2 about drug addiction. When I hear live versions of these songs I get chills up my spine.

"Fee Fi Fo" by the Cranberries is about child abuse. Great song.

When The War Is Over has to be up there.

Holy Grail on Grand Final Day takes on a new meaning.

Well I'm not quite sure how you'd define powerful in terms of songs, I mean Ben Harper - Another Lonely Day is an extremely quiet song but it still stirs me up. Anyway, if I take it the way I think it's meant my list is: Muse - Space Dementia, Weezer - Only in Dreams, Radiohead - Wolf At The Door, Smashing Pumpkins - Zero and Tool - Stinkfist.

Placebo - My Sweet Prince

--edit--

Totally biased opinion, but isn't everyones?
Plus their piano version of Teenage Angst makes me want to cry.

Do I think I can go past Wonderwall?

Nup, I can't. Like mouldy_bread, biased, but still. I wouldn't love it/Oasis so much if it wasn't so good.

Edit: post below reminds me, With or Without You (how did I forget) & All I Want Is You, by U2.

Some of my picks:

The first movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony (particularly the Kleiber/VPO recording)
Bach's keyboard concerto in D minor BWV. 1052
Sibelius' 4th symphony
Carter's 2nd string quartet (all of his string quartets are sublime)
Wagner's "Parsifal"
Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex" oratorio.

(yes, I know that technically these aren't songs)

Gotta agree with jeffers on "All I want is you"

But seriously...

"Power" - Ice T
"Fight the power" - Public Enemy
"Power of love" - Huey Lewis & the News.

Now, unlike Tenacious D, that's a power trio.

Human evolution TOOL style with the greatest end to a song. The last minute is nothing short of spectacular.

Have seen them live five times and just cannot fathom the brilliance of this band.

2 songs that really have a powerful feel for me are
Exit Music - Radiohead
Changes - Black Sabbath
Both songs still send shivers down the spine.

For a good dose of powerful music I listen to a lot of Muse
Feeling Good is a standout.

I'll go for Into the Void by Black Sabbath. Sounds like armageddon is upon us with a great lyrical message to boot.

Resurrection - Fear Factory (album version).. a monstor of an arrangement

Angel - Massive Attack.. Through head phones, this song can alter your brain

Undenied - Portishead.. An unervingly beautiful song. Can sometimes make me feel uncomfortable

High and Dry - Radiohead.. in a certain frame of mind, this can stop me from speaking/thinking.

Like Suicide - Soundgarden.. magnificent dynamics

Times of Trouble - Temple of Dog.. inspirational.

'Nessum Dorma' or maybe it's just got the most poweful word with the 'vincero' bit at the end. My Dad had an album by some famous opera singer (Bjorling?) and played it.. quite a lot. Think I leared to hate it at one stage but then as I grew found that it invoked a lot of memories... Good and bad.

For me at least, nothing quite raises the heckles like this song does.

Daylight,

'And the Band played Waltzing Mathilda' - Pogues version, Bogles is alright, just prefer MacGowans voice.

'New Dawn Fades' - Joy Division.

'God Only Knows' - Beach Boys.

'See me'(cant remember if that's the actual name of the song or not) - Tommy. You know the final track, 'See me. Feel me. Touch me. Heal me', that bit. ;)

and I might get howled down for this but..

Memories - Elaine Page. Yea, I know.. Andrew Lloyd Webber.. but it WAS from TS Eliot's poem and the lyric/poem is just genius.

"VINCERO.... VINNNNCCCEERROOOOOOOOO"... :)

Great pick, Grendel.

I find it particularly moving on Anzac Day. I know a lot of ex-servicemen, and I'm thinking of them when I hear it.
