Excellent trading period by Essendon, re-signing Dean Solomon and all other key players apart from Mark Bolton who remains in the air. Perhaps ironically, we end up with Richmond's pick 6 AND Dean Solomon.

IN:
Justin Murphy, Matthew Allan, Mark Alvey, draft pick 6

OUT:
Cory McGrath, Danny Jacobs, draft pick 44

That's all sourced from the EFC official website, so it's legit.

I'm reading conflicting reports about the Allan trade. I first heard that we gave up our third round pick. Now I'm reading that it was actually our fourth round pick.

But some good deals. I don't agree with trading for Murphy, but I can live with it. McGrath was just in the VFL anyway.

Jacobs for pick #6 and Alvey is a brilliant deal. We lose one of our more expendable players and get a very good pick and a hard midfielder.

And with two first round picks we are in good shape for the future.

We traded him for McGrath, who is even worse than Murphy. If Murphy works then it's a decent pick up, if not, then he'll get to play in Bendigo every week. It's no risk for a possible return.

Pick 6 is the big scalp, but Allan and Alvey are two good pickups, and all we really lost of note is Jacobs.

Im not sure how well the Dons did

Allan and Murphy are pretty much useless. Alvey is decent

McGrath will be a good player for Carlton, never got his chance at the Dons. Jacobs is a gun

Pick 6 is the big one though. Sheeds will get a star with that pick

And we lost Jacobs because we didn't want to pay him what he wanted so I'm fairly happy with it all.

Hrm, apologies, seems AFL.com is now reporting pick 60 for Allan, which makes it another zero risk trade along with Murphy.

Essendon have done well apart from the Murphy-McGrath deal.

Then again, if Sheedy was determined not to give Cory a go, might as well send him somewhere else.

If Allan is fit, he'll be a handy backup ruckman. Murphy is no risk, because McGrath was just playing in the VFL anyway.

Alvey was a very good player in 2002, and started out this year well before having a serious injury. Of course, there's a question mark as to how well he can return.

McGrath will be a good player for Carlton, but we didn't need him. Same goes for Jacobs. He was expendable.

I think the reasoning behind the Murphy trade was that Essendon were basically going to delist McGrath anyway, so why not get something for him.

Wouldn't have done it myself, but I would guess that is the rationale involved in this deal.

Unbelievable.

Bombers rip everybody off, again.

Murphy will come good at Essendon and Alvey and Allan will be handy, but draft pick 6 alone is worth Jacobs, McGrath and pick 60.

Congratulations.

Well Done Bombers

Pick 6 and Alvey for Jacobs was an absolute steal

Once again you have outsmarted everyone at the trade table, just as you did with Cupido and McPhee last year

Well Done

Matty Allan struggled to get a game in a team screamin out for a ruckman.. ruckman with stress fracture in foot - doesnt bode well... he also comes with a manager that would present most carlton supporters with a difficult choice if they had only one bullet and david allison and john elliot lined up in front of them.

Murphy = Hack. Talented but a hack, a lazy heartless hasbeen both were going to get delisted if nobody took them anyway. We were willing to throw in a slab and a pizza to smooth over the deal if need be.

enjoy.

As much as I hate Carlton I still hope cory does well. Sheeds must have really hated this guy!

It's the Murphy part I can't get my head around!!

Like everyone said we did pretty much ALL zero risk trades..

And (I dont know if someone already said this i didnt read all the posts) Jacobs was gonna quit Essendon anyways and knocked back a deal this morning or something... We got compensated nicely though with Alvey and Pick 6...

Good work Bombers.

Great results all around.

Players who want to play for the club, 3 draft picks in the first 30.

You couldn't wish for anything more.

Everyone's laughing at us for getting Murphy, but i think he might be the ace. We don't need tough midfielders, we have too many of them already for a good balance - we need a high possession receiver who can use the ball, and he sure is that. He'll be handy i think, very handy, and opposition fans will hate him, and that can't be a bad thing ;)
