View Full Version : Drafting non Victorians
Historically we have not had a good record of keeping our top draftees that come from Victoria, especially Melbourne based ones.
Those that stay cost as considerably more in trying to keep them at the club.
I am referring to players like Hilton, O'Bree, Cupido, and now Gram etc.
There are also eight Vic. based clubs continuously barking at the door trying to get our young guys to go back.
The National draft is a good opportunity to begin looking at talent that is not Vic based and that would be easier for us to keep.
So keeping this as a policy whom would you suggest should be looked at and what would they bring to the club?
It's no point recruiting non-Vics. If they have very little to offer in terms of potential for future development.
By the way I am Victorian, but I am sick of recruiting Mammy's boys. When are we going to recruit some men with independent and mature outlook on life? Gees, 15 year olds went to war and died in foreign lands and we can't keep some of our recruits in another Australian city.
Hope we get some guns, even though we don’t have access to the top 10 this year.
:) :) :) :)

Have also drafted Chris Scott, Leppa & Luke Power. They've hung around. Think the "go home" feeling is an individual thing. Just hoping Reiwoldt feels mummies heart strings tug in the near future!

irish, I can't find much on Morrison, other than the usual member of the AIS etc. Can you flesh him out a little more?

Reiwoldt needs to be encouraged and enticed to feel the "go home" heart strings.
I am not sure if we've ever tried hard enough to touch the heart and the hip pocket as well.
Should have been doing it before he signed for an extension to his contract.
Much the same as Carlton is doing with Goddard now. Goddard has one more year of his initial two years left. At the end of 2004 he will be coming out of contract. Rumor has it that Carlton is working on a very parochial Carlton family to get Goddard not to sign another contract. If Carlton finishes last in 2004 as most pundits will have us believe, they already have Goddard penciled in as a Carlton player.
We should have been and should be now far more pro-active with Reiwoldt, and family to have Nick on our list at the beginning of 2006.

Absolutely ridiculous attitude to give Victorian youngsters a miss because of a few weak minded ones. No one tries to put one over the Brisbane Lions because if we want you we will take you and if you want to leave we will make sure we get the best deal available for the Brisbane Lions.
Take a good look at the players that have gone because of homesickness...
O'Bree, Molloy, Hilton, Headland, Cupido, Robbins, Picken
Of that group only Cupido has improved since leaving the Lions, and his attitude is not needed around a football club. The rest have stagnated or gone backwards, which is possibly an indicator of mental weakness. These are not the players that win a premiership.
Look at the Victorian players in the Premiership Team...
Johnson, Lappin, Leppitsch, Power, Bradshaw, Brown, Hart
These are the calibre of player and person that win flags. They have invested themselves into our football club and are reaping the just rewards. Even the players like notting who missed out, wants to play for our football club, even when he was being chased by numerous other clubs that may have afforded him greater opportunities.
In regard to Riewoldt, I would be annoyed if the Lions pursued him. He is a fantastic footballer and hopefully a ten year player for the Saints, but it would be hypocritical to complain about players leaving due to homesickness and then use that to recruit other players. We will build the young players on our list and put faith in our drafting ability. If Riewoldt approached the Lions, it would be negligent to not look in to it however.
So I totally disagree with your non-Victorian theory.

Completely agree with you, CJW. Very well argued, and
reasoned, post. Of course it is going to depend on individuals,
and to blame all Victorian draftees (incidently, Headland was
non-Victorian) for the antics of a few bad eggs is to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Gram, Robbins, Picken and Cupido, definitely, left because they couldn't get a game at the Lions, wanted opportunities elsewhere.
O'Bree and Hilton, was probably a combination of opportunity and the go-home factor.
Maybe if you GIVE THESE KIDS A GAME they won't leave. The supposed "go-home" bull**** is ignoring the facts.
Only one player of quality has left in recent times, and one player of quality has come home.

I have mentioned in earlier posts that a perceived lack of opportunities does come in to play, however so does the 'homesickness'. If it didn't a player like Gram would say I want be traded, not I want to be traded to a Victorian club. If Notting had left this year I would have put it all down to opportunity because it was the WA and Sydney clubs that he spoke to, but all the above mentioned players wanted to return to their home states.
These kids have to earn their games, it is not a given that they will play regular senior football because they were drafted. That is why the Lions are successful, maybe Collingwood should try this theory?
The kids who went home, with the possible exception of Bolton and Robbins, are all lacking in certain aspects and that is why they have not kicked on as footballers.

When O'Bree left, we got nothing in return as I recall ( a la Stevens ). Was this a policy of 'standing firm' - as he wanted to go to the Pies - or we got ambushed ?

Riewoldt has a known soft-spot for the Lions, he's admitted it on the footy show numerous times. However the only way we will get him is if he refuses to sign a contract and demands to be traded to Brisbane, even then we will have to give the world for him.
I think we've missed out on the chance to get Riewoldt when we couldn't get him in the draft though. I can't ever see him playing for a Brisbane team unless it's at the end of his career for a couple of seasons. We'll have to be content in the knowledge that a QLD bred player is completely tearing up the competition.
I can only imagine Brown and Riewoldt in the same forward line:cool:
qld bred mmm maybe. tasmanian born and we would say bred.we gave him to you after the hard work was done !!

From memory, O'Bree wanted around the $220k mark per season when he came out of contract. We refused to pay that for a player outside our best 22. Fair enough too. Plus he wanted to go home.As usual, Collingwood pounced on someone coming home..........
