> Jordan McMahon re-signs with the Bulldogs
>
> For immediate release
>
> 20 October 2003
>
>
> Western Bulldogs midfielder Jordan McMahon has today signed a new two-year
contract with the club. The 20-year-old was the Bulldogs first selection
(number 10 overall) at the 2000 National Draft.
>
> Originally from the Glenelg Football Club, Jordan played 18 games in 2003
for a career total of 37. Jordan made his senior AFL debut in Round 6, 2001,
under lights against the Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium.
>
> That night, Jordan gathered 18 possessions in an impressive first up
display and he has since further underlined his potential with an AFL Rising
Star nomination in Round 18, 2002.
>
> A former 110-metre hurdler at the Under 13 and Under 16 level in the
National Athletics Championships, Jordan is a player that the Bulldogs are
looking to develop into an important part of the team's midfield in the
years to come.
>
> The Western Bulldogs Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Newport, said the
re-signing of McMahon continued the trend of extremely positive news for the
club following a very successful trade period last week.
>
> "Jordan is a part of a group of extremely talented younger players that
are going to form the nucleus of our team in the years to come, said
Newport. "Like the rest of his younger team mates, we are extremely happy
that Jordan is continuing his career at the Western Bulldogs."
>
> "In the next few years, we are all looking forward to watching Jordan step
up and fulfil his potential which is a very exciting prospect for all
Western Bulldogs supporters," said Newport.

What about Gilbee and Bowden? I haven't read the papers very much lately. Have they signed and I just missed it?
The best thing about this is that he is very attractive to opposition clubs in next year's trade period, as he will be under contract. I don't want to see him in Bulldog colours next year if he continues to play unaccountable, weak, scared football. I hope he blitzes against Port next year, so they trade him for Salopek next year.

I hope he starts averaging 24 damaging disposals a week, accererating out of heavy traffic and delivering pinpoint passes to our forwards from the wing, and develops into a top shelf outside midfielder (for us) like Jason Akermanis.

You've got to be kidding?
Jordy will be a fabulous player.
Just because he's played 37 games, lets not forget he is younger than Boyd, Harris or Skipper; is only a few months older than Power or McGuinness and is just 1 year older than Faulkner!
Everyone here raves about how good Faulkner will be. Will he be as good as Jordy is this time next year? Highly unlikely.
To all you Jordy lovers out there, I would love nothing more than to see him develop into an explosive game-breaker and to prove me wrong, but I'm just calling it as I have seen it so far. He currently is not prepared to put his body on the line when it's his turn, and he never bothers to play tightly on his designated opponent. In short, he has absolutely no presence on the field and is not a team player. we don't need players who do occasional flashy things, nice pass here, good baulk there. You don't need to be old to do the team oriented things well. Power, Birss, Hargrave, they are all more team-oriented in the 1%ers than McMahon, and all I'm saying is that this coming year is make or break for him. If he is not willing to drastically improve this side of his game, then I'd rather see others at the club who are.

I'm actually with you on this Sedat..
If he wants to play like a pansy next year like he did for most of this year, its not that great of a thing to resign him...
As I said in another post hes a gamebreaker, and like you I want him to play more accountable football.... But in my opinion, he didn't deserve to play 37 Senior AFL Games the way he has... It would've been better spent on someone else
It's not too late for him to improve in these areas, but he clearly needs to lift dramatically in his a) attack on the ball and b) ability to play much closer to his direct opponent. He's actually been playing like a pansy since he started, not just last year, and not just in the infamous game against North in 2002 either.

Good to see Jordan 'defence is that thing that keeps the supporters off the oval' McMahon will remain a Bulldog for a few more years. I know he lacks in the accountability department, but I noticed him laying a few decent tackles in the last few games and in interviews I've seen with him he seems very committed to the club and its traditions.
I agree with what's been said here about the improvements he has to make, but players with his flair and speed are rare and as soon as he bulks up a bit (when's that conditioning coach coming?) he'll be a valuable player. Bowden should be the next priority.

A few times this season our team turned it up.
Jordy was as guilty as anyone on these occaisions.
I also think he was one of those players who realized we were short on depth and was complacent about his spot in the team.
I watched him for a whole qtr against Williamstown and he never touched leather. And it was all due to a lack of effort.
Like Sedat I want to see this talented player make it.
These are just my observations made this year. Anyone who disagrees about his efforts this year was'nt watching.
The whole team was awash with shirkers and sulkers and softies this year (with the usual few exceptions) but this was due to the woeful dynamics of the team structure. Someone like Jordie just needs everything going well around him for him to fire. Hopefully in the longer term he will be one of the firers, rather than a firee.

Just because you are a member of the Grammar Police, doesn't give you the right to make up words.;)
There's one member of this household who's purring away at the news. Bring back the dreadlocks, I say!

Get off Jordans back. He is still learning the caper but he has the skills and speed to be one of the best players in the competition.
I dont know about you but I like a young player with some self belief.
Rhode has only had one year to work with him and he was injured pre season last year. Most players become more accountable have better defensive skills as their careers have gone on. Jordan will be no different.
With a good pre season on the weights Jordan will shine in 2004!

Sedat is just stating the facts
Currently we cannot afford to have Guido, McMahon and Gilbee in the one side. I would have liked to see one of them traded for a stronger player.
Having said that if they learn to play stronger, accountable footy then fine.
A lot of people on this board forget we finished last and goals are scored against us too easy, so most players aren't as good as what we think.
Players do improve though and I'm hopeful.

I think Sedat is stating his opinion. Seeing as we have heaps of talls now after the trade week i think we will see players like McMahon, Gilbee and Gia being a lot more valuable to the team because they are quick, skillful and agile and will be able to play off the talls. What do you mean by 'most players aren't as good as what we think'? It is a lot harder to play well in a side that is losing every week and therefore is not performing. We have Hahn who is a strong medium sized player and senior players like West, Johnno who are not tiny.
Guys, as I stated before, it's only one supporter's observation of his career to date. Yes, he has explosive pace and very good finishing skills, but his defensive aspects do not exist ATM. He really needs to take some hits and work hard one-on-one against his direct opponent much more than he has done in the past. He doesn't even shepard his teammates because he seems to fear physical contact. One argument in his favour that I won't buy is his relative youth; he has been in the system since 2001, which is longer than Judd, Ball, Hodge and Polak. So this excuse really does not stand up. Like I said, I hope he turns it around and I'm wrong, but he better get cracking in 2004.

Exactly.
And Faulkner may not be as good as MacMahon in a year but I would very much hope that at the end of his third year he is mroe advanced then Jordy is now

That everything is done in order for Jordan
to reach his full potential.
I've been a knocker of his, but I also see his genuine ability on a footy field. Take into consideration that he is by-far the best weight for age talent in the AFL technically (perhaps he should enter the Cox Plate) if your comparing him to other players of the same build like Cam Hunter and one or two others.
He definetly needs to bulk up a little and add a lot of toughness to his game, but with his speed and his foot skills he could be the next Nigel Lappin.
But if he doesn't find that extra dimension to add to his game then he will unfortunately forever be the next Scott Bamford.
