After playing a strong grand final game against St Kilda in 2010, Dawes began 2011 with an air of expectancy hanging over him. Having shown how much of a presence he could be in a pressure game, the hope was that in 2011 Dawes would improve his overhead marking and become the complete player. Unfortunately for Chris, the season did not unfold as he might have wished. A knuckle fracture, and perhaps some niggles acquired earlier in the season, robbed him of game fitness and confidence. He missed rounds 16 – 22 and never recaptured his early form.
Statistically, Chris Dawes’ best games for the season were the first two against Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos where he had 26 and 20disposals. His third game against Carlton produced three goals. Against Melbourne in round 12, he got 18 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal. In the first 3 games no free kicks were awarded against him. Over the season, he earned three times more free kicks than in 2010 but gave away two frees less than in the previous year.
The general opinion amongst supporters is probably that Dawes’ form fell away after the knuckle injury in the round 15 game against Hawthorn, where young Jordan Lisle played his best game for Hawthorn opposed to Dawes. Chris’ form had dropped away from the early rounds, and Lisle was beating him on the day before his injury.
Chris Dawes can look awkward when his timing is astray. This is evident when his endeavors to be at the drop of the ball see him caught underneath it, stretching for overhead marks that he is unable to grab. If he has good touch, and gets to the fall of the ball, the overhead marks that are spilled at least bring the ball to ground, where Chris is also capable of firing out a quick handball or laying a tackle. The combination of excellent ground skills, a broad, aggressive body and a good football brain make Chris a useful KP player when he is in form.
Dawes was only a shadow of his former self when he returned against Fremantle in Rd 23, collecting only 7 possessions. He was well beaten by Jack Anthony who played his best game for Fremantle against Dawes. Against Geelong in round 24, he collected only 7 possessions against Scarlett. Chris’ finals’ games returned better disposal figures against quality opponents, but he certainly did not play with the authority of his 2010 finals games. He kicked three goals against Hawthorn in the PF.
Dawes could have moved clubs for better money for 2013. He seems an intelligent, articulate guy who can be counted on to bring credit to the club. To truly become a key forward, Dawes needs to regain the form and touch of early 2010, then show that he can crash packs and take overhead marks. Hopefully, an injury free season awaits Chris in 2012.
