On another matter, was surprised to see a melbourne supporter selling Melbourne memberships outside the alpha bakehouse in downtown Yarraville last saturdey morning. When I chipped him for being in Yarraville and not Hampton he retorted "come on, it's a victorian club?".
Thought no more of it except when I had to go altona gate early monday morning (9.30). Lo and behold two guys being very upfront selling bloody Richmond raffle tickets and I think memberships outside sanity.
Along with Carlton having an interest in a Laverton pokies venue and Collingwood running house raffles (from bulldogs) in Carolyn Springs it is obvious that whilst we reside in the western suburbs we of course do not own it. It makes for an interesting dichotemy: other teams, players (rawlings) and supporters looked down on us because of who we are and where we live yet we understand that the old tribal geographic boundaries between teams are things of the 50's.
This is precisley the reason why the whole rawlings trade issue has been an important and successful initiative. We should not be seen as the lowest of the low, the team most likley to fold, the team you only support because you live in the western suburbs or your father barracked for the dogs. We are a real player in the business of football, able to outhink and outplay (survivor?) our opponents. We need to be seen as an adopter of the national marketplace not a tribal team. The Darwin initiative is an important aspect that could be used to push us out into the wider marketplace.
Even if we do not get him we have showed that we can play the game, not be lapdogs living on handouts from the powerful. Starting to turn into diatribe.
