This was in a Mark Alvey article in the Age on Sunday:

Alvey has strong bonds of his own at Whitten Oval. "It probably takes two or three years to form good friendships, but from day one, Rohan Smith has been like a father figure to me. To leave a bloke like that, I know I shouldn't single out one person, but the realisation that you'll never play in the same side again is tough."

In the same paper in a seperate article Smith commented that he would be looking forward to getting to know Jade Rawlings as part of the International rules team and making him feel welcome out West.

How good a guy is Rohan Smith?

Bubba is a very nice guy who cares deeply about the footy club. We grew up arounf the corner from one another although I am about 10 years older than him I can remeber him as a kid joining in our games of street footy. His mother was my kindergarten teacher.

Good Western Subs boy, just like Boof Johnson, Gian Sira and Westie and the departed #35. Have I missed anyone?

There is a minority of us that don't steal cars, honest...

I used to love St. Albans' finest, "Billy the Kid" Kolyniuk. Great forward pocket specialist, very clever around goals.

You're practically related then;) Geez, you're sounding like Suzie.

Can't believe that their was strong talk a couple of years back about trading him:( My brother (younger, so what does he know anyway?) still reckons he's a dud, LOL.

Bubba is a champ.

I have still got his autograph on my jumper from when I was 7 and he signed my jumper in the change rooms at Whitten Oval....whilst he still had the number 31!!! Plus a very strange hairstyle.

You shouldve seen him, he had only played like his second game of league footy and I came in with his number asking for his autograph.

Very good player, very good bloke.

The hairstyle was a mullet...a mega mullet. Cut it off before he played his 1st senior game for the club.
I remember him kicking bags of 5 goals on a couple of occasions for the reserves whilst wearing the number 31

V St Kilda at Western Oval 1992. He kicked a pearler from the boundary line at the Barkly Street end. Right foot around his body.

Lockett missed three easy shots in one quarter. Hawkins as always was brilliant and Grant kicked an amazing goal in the last.

The Ghost of Alby Smedts said to me "weve got another 10 of watching him(Grant) do that" Its gone so quickly.

Bubba, well what can you say about him, he loves the doggies, he loves his family, and you can tell he cares a lot about those two things, he is bulldogs through and through, he will do anything for his mates, and takes the new guys at the club under his wing, and looks like hes got a really strong friendship with gilbs, but not as strong as johnno :D .

Rohan Smith is a great advertisement for the club and the game. My mum told me about the Alvey article on the weekend, and after Brown's departure it was nice to hear someone say something nice about the club.

There's an award at the WB Best and Fairest that goes something like "most respected player" or "best clubman" (or something like that). Rohan has won that a few times hasn' he? Deservedly so!!

Bubba is an absolute champion player and an even better person. He is always there to help other players and the club and never needs to be asked to do it.

If he isnt already a life member of the Bulldogs he will definately be there.

Ps. I think Kolly went on to do some coaching, not 100% sure though.

He had it all through his first senior season. First game of 93 he had a new haircut and new number and was the most unrecognisable player from one season to the next i can think of ever.

Champion player and a great leader. His footy this year was as good as I've seen, he really is bulldog through and through.

Smith , Johnson and Grant. Are there three more loyal and passionate footballers in the AFL ? I think not , it is an absolute privelage to have these men playing at the doggies. Not only are they admired by us , but supporters of other clubs see there immense value on and off the field.

This year was vindication that Bubba is one of the best attacking half-backs in the competition: the Guy McKenna of the last few years. I still curse Suntan for ruining him in '00-'01 by having him play one-out from the goalsquare.

This is exactly what Westy was complaining about in the Sun a couple weeks back. Don't forget what a champ Westy has been for us, he is always the forgotten one but is just as much a bulldog as any!

Westy, too, please.
