Shae McNamara played in the VFL in 2010 and was surprisingly re-signed after being delisted for 2012. I am happy for him to remain on the list because there is a feelgood factor associated with Shae’s association with the club. Shae’s dad was a regular follower and contributor to the VFL game thread on the club website. He seemed a real nice guy eager to hear if his son was getting a kick.

Shae was used in the ruck and as a forward this year, and also played some games on the wing. As a winger, he gathered 20+ possessions on a few occasions. Playing in the ruck, he had 23 hitouts against the Bullants in a losing team. Although he was largely used as a forward during 2011, with short spells relieving in the ruck, he actually kicked more goals in 2010 (14) than in 2011,. He displayed some agility for a man his size, and is also able to kick with both feet, which is quite amazing given his short exposure to the skills of the game.

Perhaps Shae has been retained as back-up should a Steve Bradbury situation occur and the American is the last big man standing. After two years in the system, Shae needs to become more of a presence around the ground as a ruckman. His tap work has improved, and he has shown ability as a link player. He would be looking at improving his overhead marking and developing confidence in his reading of the game. At 204cm and 104kg, Shae is a big man, and adopting a more physical approach to the game may help him make the next step.
