After he got dropped for the finals again, I would have put money on him being traded. Kinda surprised he is still with us.

Well, possibly we see his true colors, and thats why we love him?

He was great in the WAFL semi against East Perth. Wish he played like that all the time.

Yep, its safe to say he saved his career here in the west with his WAFL finals performances for West Perth.

i can't see why Chambers wasn't given more game time. I thought that in 2002 he was one of our most vital impact players and sadly Woosha left it too late in 2003 only giving him limited chances, he and Josh Wooden are 2 very underrated players who I wish would at least win a bench spot with the eagles, if the eagles don't want them, then trade them for more defenders.

Carlton made there trading policy quite clear well before the trading period, and for the life of me I thought we would have traded at least one of the likes of Chambers, Wooden, Read etc ... to them, although there is a good chance that they just did not have anything in return for us.

We all know Callum's upside, his disposal is normally very good, kicks a very good goal, very fast. But he has a tendancy to let his opponent gather quite a bit of the ball in dangerous parts of the oval. Unfortunately for him, we already have quite a few players with the same resume on file, who do his job quite a bit better going are way. I can't see him getting much of a run this season either unless he develops a better defensive side to his game.

I wouldn't think it's beyond him either. He does have a good level of endurance, so basically it comes down to teaching him how to be more accountable.

We all know what we have with Callum. Dangerous offensively, can be a liability defensively. The question is are we happy with that knowing he's probably not going to get much better?

memo the gur and others

Where is the evidence of these opponents doing the damage?
This year Chambers got four games. He played exceptionally well against Adelaide and Geelong - who were the players he was on, and what did they do to damage the WCE?.
Against Melbourne he had a modest game but no better or worse than his opponent(s) and against Fremantle he was hardly on the ground - his nominal opponent Walker had the same or fewer kicks during the course of the game, but did kick one goal when Chambers got caught on the wrong side of a ballup. IS THIS WHAT YOU ARE BASING YOUR OPINION ON?
If so you might also ponder that the ballup might have gone WCE's way, leading to a set play possession and dish off to a fast running wingman, and Walker would then be criticised for the same thing.

I respect your opinion and we often have lively debates on this page about relative meerrits of different player. However I would have to support GUR on this one CHambers is very lose and very soft, rearly does he place his head over the ball and make a hard physical contest.

You point out that Walker kicked the goal on him at a stopage contetst and if it had gone the other way we may have done the same can be a valid one if it happens in the midfield. It is inexcusable to play lose of your man in your backline at astopage contest which is what he did and is the reason IMO why he did not play in the finals.

Chambers has potential but what he has to do, as Gur rightfully points out, is improve his defensive side and he may become a regualr.

Cheers

Ultimately I think Chambers has had his day. Probable that he has another year on his contract or the Eagles may have been more active in getting rid of him.

Like everyone, I know Chambers has a very dangerous attacking side to his game. However defensively he is the worst of our runners (possibly Adkins aside). I remember in the Adelaide game he was cheered effusively by the crowd for effecting a smother on a Crows player on the wing. I however was too busy cursing him for absolutely wussing out of the contest to get the ball in the first place - he would have been first there, yet he baulked on picking up the ball and the Crows player ran around him. The smother was almost like he said to himself "gee that looked bad, if I don't do something spectacular now Woosha will carve off my nurries". There were similar incidents in the Geelong and Melbourne games that I saw too.

This I'm afraid is typical of Chambers, and he doesn't have Judd's skills to make up for it. I'm sure he'll get another chance in 2004, but he will certainly need to pick up the defensive side before he has a chance of being a regular again.

Base your assumptions on Callum's entire AFL career, not just this season syd.

I saw that too Mr Q, but it was probably only visible from Bay 315. Those jokers in 316 probably only saw the smother. Go 315 - the Bay to Be In!!!

I think a lot of us forgot the 2002 season Callum had. If he got a place in the early stages of the 2003 season he might have been able to hold his spot down, instead of having to prove himself at WAFL level once again.

If he does go at the end of 2004, who will take his place working on the Eagles Travel Desk?

How old is he?

I reckon he has the best disposal in the team...always hits a target...I'd have him coming off the bench like 2002.

I've always liked Callum, and was really surprised this year when it took him so long to break into the team

He has great endurance and is deadly kicking for goal on the run, i say keep him and use him off the bench like 2002, theres definetly a spot for him in the team
