Essendon v. West Coast
Sunday, May 06, 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM
Essendon beat the Eagles by 88 points in a game which was nothing
more for a training run. The only event of note to emerge from
the game was the Matthew Lloyd became the first player to kick 10
goals at Colonial Stadium.
For the moment, Essendon are happy to let other teams such as
Richmond, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn grab the spotlight whilst
they simply go about their business.
Only a goal in it at quarter time but then, Essendon surged away
with 15 goals to 5 in the next two quarters and the game was
over. An already aging and weary Eagles side was not helped with
injuries to such crucial players like Peter Matera, McIntosh,
Kemp, Cousins and Gardiner.
The Bombers spread it around and had 9 goal kickers to the Eagles
4.
This is the time of the year when the top eight and bottom eight
teams are separated. If the Eagles are to salvage anything from
their season this year, they must be competitive against the
Power next week, if not beat them. They are not good enough to
bounce back from a 2-5 start to the season.
They have just entered blockbuster territory and in the next
three weeks square off against Richmond, Melbourne and then
Hawthorn. Over these three weeks we will find out who are
contenders and who are pretenders this year.
The Richmond game in particular should be a beauty given the
history between the clubs. Richmond knocked the Bombers out of
the 1995 finals in a classic and you can bet your bottom dollar
that Sheedy will be bringing this up at some stage during the
week.

Sorry but TomFC's virused computer and my moving to a new flat
have conspired to deny us all of a Hawks v. Crows match report.
