Hunter. To me they seem to be very similier players
They could give it to Farren Ray if they were lucky enough to Draft him. That would meet with your approval wouldn't it sera given that your now his number 1 fan?

You have converted me Yakuza. I have seen the light, the RAY of light...
But yes. I agree. Young Farren is a shoe-in to be our next enforcer.

Give it to Ben Cosgriff.;)
I'd like to see it back out there. However of our regular and semi-regular players the only ones with high numbers (>30) are Embley (32), Matera (33), Green(35), Hunter (39), Wirrpunda (44) and Carroll (46).
Can't see Matera or Wirra wanting to change numbers, and Embley's had 32 for a long time now, probably wouldn't want to change. Similarly with Hunter. Don't think Green has earned an important number just yet, and given Carroll wore 46 at the beginning of his spell at the Dockers I don't think he'd want to change numbers again (oh and he doesn't deserve it either).
So if 24 is to be reallocated it would have to be to one of our younger players. Staker might be a possibility or perhaps Selwood, but I can't see the club giving it to any of the others on the list.

How about Cousins? All captains of the Eagles could wear Woosha's number as he was the first premiership captain of the club.

I think that when a player retires the number should be given a years break and then given to the new recruits. The idea of matching numbers to certain types of players just doesn't make sense. Let the individual want to make a name for himself wearing that jumper not the jumper dictating that the player must live up to those who wore it before him. Poor ole Ashley Sampi having to try and play like Chris Lewis because he looks like him and wears the same jumper number.
Tradition is good but lets not make it something that rules the way we do things.

I personally wish that we had more numbers, ie go to 999, that way we could retire numbers belonging to the legends of the sport... Before I get jumped on I know this is not going to happen but I think that symbolism would be good...

There's an episode of Futurama where all the baseball players in the 30th century have to wear numbers like "3/16" , because all of the whole numbers have been retired.
I always thought that Woosha should have worn 666 on his back

Of the players mentioned, nobody really jumps out.
Adam Hunter maybe, but he's already got Muddy Waterman's number, so maybe he can just aim to match Muddy (which I'd be VERY happy with) for now. :)
Give it a years break, then give it to a new recruit I guess.
I like the Cousins idea though, would be nice to build that as a tradition at the club.

It's a jumper with a number on the back, just like every other jumper. If you start revering it because of who has worn it then it becomes an anchor around the neck of future players. The tradition of the retiring player handing the jumper to the new recruit should be one that is held in high regard.
Antonowicz was expected to be the next Sumich just because he wore the number 4 on his back. I can still recall the headlines after he was given the number 4.
A number should be retired for a year after the player who wears it retires but that should be the end of it. It gives you the opportunity to remember that player because the number isn't out on the field. The number should then be given to your new recruits with no expectation other than wearing the jumper with pride.
The names of previous number holders are painted on the lockers for the players to remember. That is where it should stay.

Get outta here, it's still Mighty Peter Wilson's number in my book ! ;)
GO WILLOW !
But yeah, your right, It SOUNDS like a nice idea but Cousins has established himself with that number.
So when Cousins' time is up, we will be wondering who will get #9.
So best probably not to bother.

Hunter or Green for my liking.
I think Kasey Green would be my choice to wear the famous 24.
