View Full Version : What young Eagle do you overrate?

Pretty much everyone thinks Judd is bound for superstardom, and McDougall will be a good player, but I'm interested to know what players people think they rate far higher (or lower) than the 'average' Eagles supporter? So cast caution to the wind, prepare to be laughed at, and make the wildest prediction you can think of which deep down you maybe believe.

For me, its Staker. From before the preseason I thought he was bloody good, but since I've seen him at AFL level, I've been pretty ecstatic. I don't think he's going to be a Mitchell White flanker sort, I think he's going to be a lot better! Not only are his skills incredibly clean, he's extremely decisive, a very underrated quality in football. Guys who can make the right decision instantly are pretty rare.
Once he packs on a few kgs, I can see him being a versatile, elite defender in the Silvagni mode. Good in the air, very agile, and a great tackler to go with textbook skills and coolness under pressure. I'm convinced we're looking at a 250 gamer.

So am I the only nutcase with crazy opinions? :)

yeh i rate staker highly aswell.

but i really have a great deal of respect for darren glass. i think that while he hasnt been brillant down back he can certainly hold his head up high. i hear the lesser informed eagles fans at matches degrade a guy who gives it his best all the time against the competitions superstars like richo. his skills arnt remarkable but he is a good 'blanket' and will be a very very good player who will go on to play at least 150 games for our great club.

i have also had a soft spot for hunter aswell ...u have to admire the was he plays his footy.

Glass and Staker.

I agree about Staker and would like to throw Gaspar into the mix.

I like Gaspar and think he will add a new dynamic to the team as does everyone else but like many others we haven't seen much of him. He is constantly named as our saviour at CHF/CHB or Full Back for these exquisite skills that very few of us have actually seen. He could turn out to be a total hack.

I think (hope) he could be our answer to Full Back and see him being better than McIntosh in his prime. McIntosh started as a forward and ended up being one of our greatest Full Backs and I think Gaspar has the necessary skills to beat the likes of Lloyd, Lynch, Tarrant, Tredrea and (wait for the Dockers rebuff) Pavlich.

In all honesty, it'd probably be Travis Gaspar.

No doubt, the guy's got talent, but I often find myself thinking "hey won't it be great when he gets out there, he'd really help at *insert position*"

But then I remember the guy hasn't managed to string more than 10 games together without going down and out.

He's got talent - but unfortunately at this point he is unreliable due to injuries, I guess I sometimes forget that (probably not alone).

I probably overrate Doogs a bit:rolleyes: And Staker as well, but he was bloody good from his debut onwards. He seems to have all the makings of a champ.

I think that with all the hype of Judd and Kerr and co. in the midfield, somtimes Jones goes a bit unnoticed.

Selwood, I just think he has all the tools to be a really great player for our club. But im probably over rating him.

I was going to say Glass, but then I never think he is a champ, always 'solid'. Fact is we have been spoilt by having Monkey and McIntosh as our two past FB's. I've never expected Glass to be that good, just solid.

I'm going to have to say Gaspar and Howser.

They are the two who I expect to be 'top-liners', probably by the end of the 2004 season.

lets hope

I hope you are right, but that is some expectation after all McIntosh together with Sivlgni was a full back of the 90's.

Lets hope...

I have not posted for a long time, but have kept an an eye on all the postings and I believe the most overrated player is Wirra as far as money being paid. I rate him along side Jeff Farmer . Where we may possibly get 16-20 games per year, some of the other players give their heart and soul and play 22 or more. Let's face it if they are lucky they might only win 1 or 2 games per season

Well apart from the fact that I wouldn't consider Wirrpunda to be a young Eagle, are you forgetting the fact that he's just signed a new, "dramaticly reduced" performance based deal ?

And also, what does "if they are lucky they might only win 1 or 2 games per season" mean.

Who might ?

If we lose a lot of games next year, probably all of them (we are rather dependent on, deep breath, McDougall, Gaspar, Glass, someone else big stepping up).

Me? Probably Humm.

Selwood, Nikoski, Beeck

possibly Humm, Munro

Definitely Gaspar, he hasn't done much to suggest his billing. Injuries aside I hope he can get to string some games together to show us what he can do.

I dunno, but young materamagic seems to seriously overrate McDougall...

Maybe he's Doog's brother or something???

Tough one. I'd like to think I don't overrate any of our young players yet, but...

McDougall hasn't really done anything of particular note, despite that I think he has what it takes. He'd probably be the #1 overrated player (at this stage) for this board.

Personally I probably overrate Lynch a little given he couldn't get into the team in 2003. Don't think I'm alone there though either.

All in all though I think its not too difficult to overrate our youngsters as they haven't played much on the whole: of those born 1982 or later (ie 21 or younger), there aren't a lot of games been played yet other than Kerr and Judd.

1982: Zac Beeck (0)
1983: Jeremy Humm (17), Quinten Lynch (11), Ashley Hansen (0), Kane Munro (18), Daniel Kerr (63), Andrew McDougall (12), Chris Judd (45), Mark Nicoski (0)
1984: Ashley Sampi (25), Mark Seaby (0), Adam Selwood (2), Brent Staker (7), Paul Johnson (1).

as far as I can tell, I don't overrate any Eagles players.

If on the other hand I was asked which players I thought were over-rated I'd probably say Gaspar, Staker, Lynch, Doogs, Johnson, Hansen, Selwood, Nicoski, Seaby, et al.

On the basis that IMO they haven't played enough footy yet to be properly rated.

For me it's Sampi.

In my eyes he can do no wrong.

Love the little fella.

This subject is not up for debate.

As I said, he can do know wrong.

Nothing.

Understand?

Good.

Go Samps.
