View Full Version : Callum Burges Article
By Paul Harrison
West Coast’s plan to draft young West Perth utility player Callum Burges in Saturday’s draft could come unstuck as the hype surrounding him builds.
In August of this year FootyGoss ran a story on Burges and the belief that some AFL clubs thought the Eagles were hiding him in an endeavour to pick him up with one of their draft selections. Click here to read the FootyGoss story from August 22
Burgess, who comes with huge wraps from his coach at Hale College, has been likened to Anthony Koutoufides and Matthew Pavlich.
West Coast are probably looking to draft Burges with one of their first two picks (11 and 20) in Saturday’s draft.
However, in recent days the young Falcon has been spoken about by several clubs. Especially in the PSA, give me a break.
Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, who was in Perth last weekend, has indicated the Bombers might take Burges in the first round. The Bombers have selections 6 and 13.
It now seems very likely that Burges will be selected in the top 20 on Saturday.
I can't believe this until i see it. A 185cm Pavlich/Kouta. Load of crap.
Who likened him to Pavlich and Kouta? His school footy coach?

Burges is more oh an athlete than pure footballer.
I cant see the value in grabing him so early in the draft. Somewhere after the top 10 I would guess but really should be a 2nd rounder.

Old School not to doubt your knowledge on Burgess but this boy can play football. I've seen him play from 13's onwards and he has always been a great player with great ball getting and handling skills. As you said he is also a good athlete. He is a leader of men and a nice person to boot.
He may not have Pav and Kouta's height but comparison to Leon Baker, Nigel Lappin or even Bucks playing style would be appropriate. ( This does not mean I am saying he is as good or will be as good)
I'm always skeptical of these types of beat ups. That's just my personal opinion.
I hope the kid does go on to be a star and show us what the hype is about.

Don't know why but this Burges Hypes reminds me of Davies and Essendon.

Fair Call
Too many people say that young players are so special. what a lot of pressure to put on kids who just want to find their feet.

I don't doubt what you have just written however, it's his athleticisim that separates him from others not his ball getting skills or pure football nous.

James McCarthy
Was very impressive for Old Collegians missed 2 years with chronic fatigue but is fully fit and back on track. He runs the 100m in a lightning 10.7 has a strong vertical leap and runs around 15 on the beep test.
If that was this case oldschool this bloke would get drafted and Pettigrew would be the number 1 pick.

If that is the case, why didn't you suggest him to me at the phantom draft? We overlooked him completely :D

And I'm sure that KS and the heirarchy at Essendon will take that on board when they are making their deliberations.

Will be interesting to see if Essendon have the courage to draft another highschool gun after the failure of Davies.

Dasler, the point I am making is that whilst he is a good footballer the number 1 skill working for him is athletic potential. The same can be said for other highly rated players and probably the same with Mackie last season. It's not a knock on him.

Was he taken with their first pick? A top 10 pick?

Our second pick in the 2000 draft, I believe. Pick #27. After Davies. Took two school kids in the same draft. One bombed, the other is coming along well.

How do you know? did someone tell you or have you seen him play or perform as an athlete?

Burges could be gone by 13 so you will have to give up pick #6 to get him. Are Essendon willing to overlook players like Kepler Bradley, Raphael Clarke and maybe Kane Tenace for Burges? Burges may have a bigger upside but the others are safer bets.

Dunno. Haven't seen him, haven't heard a great deal about him, can't comment.

Dear God I Hope not Sheedy would be Mad to overlook Bradley or Clarke IMHO.
I hope Sheeds is bluffing so W.C will take him beofe us and we'll get a better play (hopefully) @ 13.

Fair point Sera. I suppose when I came in late when you said you wouldn't be available and I was willing to go with the order of Bradley, Ray, Tenace, Chaplin, Dunn,McLean,Burgess that you suggested.
I personally believe we need ( WCE) some strong defensive players. So Chaplin was my first hope, he was gone and then Waters or Symes and a good choice by yourself in Johnson.
I suppose the other problem with the phantom draft was that we didn't get any time to chat about possibles and what the club needs.
And as you later post in this thread some of the other mids are probably safer bets as they played at the 18's against their peers.

I was really guessing on Burges, where do you see him slotting into our team? Waters and Johnson both play in defense. I really hope we pick up both of them on Saturday, they are exactly what we need.
I'm just not a firm candidate for the quality of the PSA as a competition. He can play though, whether or not at a higher level against quality opposition is yet to be seen
Would be a big risk. Davies was a flop for us. He starred in school footy and had incredible pace as well as being skilled off both feet. But the jump from school footy just to the VFL level was too much.
Not saying Burges wont be able to handle it but it still must be a big risk. Surely you wouldnt use a first round pick on him
A dead end subject. The write ups in the West on some these lads are mis-leading and over emphasised. It only adds to the un-necessary pressure placed upon them. But for the gullible it makes interesting reading.

Couldn't agree more with the last comments by Sera , dasler, marcus and kick.
It is a big jump from PSA to Colts. We had a quite a few do it the last season at S. Freo. It is one thing to star at school footy and then play Colts against the best young talent available ( at least before the 18's). Most struggled early!
We discovered that it took quite a few early rounds, some disciplined coaching and some mature young men to make it work in the end.
And I'm only talking about the jump from School to Colts, let alone the huge jump to playing Senior footy at any level let alone AFL.

Southjoy it's because we know how crap the standard of football is in the PSA, yet many still talk it up as being the best competition going around.
The reality is you put the best PSA team against someone like the Peel colts, and I would probably back the Peel colts in against them. South Fremantle would have simply crushed the PSA champs.
Speak to Wilkie and Duffield about the step from PSA to colts, imagine that from PSA to AFL or WAFL league.

I see Burgess, if we get him and I don't think as early as its been reported, as a player who will fit into our growing on ball brigade. He has the maturity to learn from those around but whether he has that intangible whatever - only time will tell.
My only worry with Johnson is the familiarity of home can sometimes be a distraction. WCE also has quite a few young tall players on the cards at the moment. Has he the drive to push ahead of them?
Waters would be the one to me who could get a jumper this year.
