West coast:

Pick 11 - Beau Waters
Pick 20 - Callum Burges
Pick 26 - Daniel McConnell

The first two picks are very good, although I would've thought the order would more likely be the other way around.

With pick 26, considering he reckons both Will Gayfer (who I reckon is worth top 15 pick) and Jacob Surjan (likewise) will still be around, I'd much rather pick one of those guys up than McConnell.

BTW, what has happened to our pick 58? Why do we no longer have it?

Also interesting to note, Michael Johnson and Ben Cosgriff don't get picked up in his phantom draft, and Matthew Specner lasts right through to pick 69.

I'd be surprised if Surjan lasts that long

Interesting to note that he thinks Fremantle will only go for local talent whilst Brock McLean slips through to 13.

I think that a lot of the Eastern States people who do these Phantom Drafts underestimate the local talent as they haven't seen or heard as much about them. They also seem to stick with the principle that clubs in WA will go for local talent rather than the best available.

I hope Burges does slip through to 20 or even 26 as I would like to pick up McLean or Waters.

Ricky Mott is mentioned as going to Adelaide and yet he hasn't nominated or the draft?

Johnson would be a better option than McConnell.

Is it possible that you are as guilty when it comes to over-estimating WA talent...ie Johnson v's McConnell..

By the way I am not having a go its just that we can all be somewhat biased sometimes and without personally assessing both players we do not really know.

Even when I take into account my bias, I still consider Johnson to be far more AFL ready than McConnell.

Recent history has shown that the club is not overly concerned with picking local talent over eastern states bred youngsters and, generally, this has proven to be a successful strategy. So it wouldn't surprise is they took a McConnell over a Johnson.

Personally though, I'd be keen to draft Johnson (and that is a local bias talking!)

That is why Richmond have so many picks because they've got so many spots left. We only have three spots on our senior list, so three draft picks.

Umm..

Are you sure you have the right thread? Nobody has suggested we take more than 3 picks.

Big Deal. Surely you pick players on future development. Not who will play first or play games of AFL next year. McConnell is a very very young KPP who will be a top player. Killed them at the Draft camp. He has way more of an upside compared to Johnson.

You pick players on expected future development.

Depends upon the needs of the team. If you look at the players who are expected to be taken in the top 10 you would say that they are more likely to get a game next year. I wouldn't expect McConnell to be playing AFL in the near future I would expect he would still be playing WAFL in 2 years time. Our team needs are for KPPs in the near future. Key Position Players take longer to develop. Johnson already has the physical size to be able to take the next step so I would go with Johnson

He will be a top player or a dud like 50% of the players that are chosen in the draft. Pettigrew killed them at the draft Camp last year and this year. Means nothing.

And speaking of upside. My son is 7 and could be a good prospect as a winger in 12 years time. Does this mean he has more of an upside than McConnell?
