View Full Version : Pre-Season & Rookie Draft
After today's events, we can sorta get an idea of who will be available during the Pre-Season and Rookie Draft.
With our pick in the preseason, I was hoping we would pick up Shane Morrison. Can play CHF and CHB, just what we needed. But now that he's been snapped up by Richmond, does anyone see anyone out there of interest to draft? I can't think of anyone that Geelong should get, or is worth getting. I think we should draft up another young bloke, just like we did with Brent 'Tweek' Moloney.
Here's a list of possible opitions that did not get picked up today:
Josh Bartel
Callum Burges
Adam Bentick
Josh Moore
Jacob Surjan
Jake Furfaro
Aaron Davey
Luke Herrington
Will Gayfer
Lance Oswald
Mikal Bloom
Nathan Foley
Pat Travers
James Allan
Dylan Kent
Ben Clifton
There's a few surprises there, but I'd be relatively happy if these sort of quality players made it to the Rookie list or win a spot through the preseason draft.

The kid steward also got overlooked. GoaldenHawk and Weaver rated him a first round pick.
For me we should pick up one of Burges, Gayfer, Surjan or Steward in the PSD. No recycled hacks like Betheras
And for the Rookies we should look at the left overs of those above plus Furfaro, Allan and Clifton. the club was keen on those three.
Pre-Season Draft:
Pick 4- Callum Burges
Rookie Draft: (3 picks)
1.Jake Furfaro or Lance Oswald
2.Jacob Surjan
3.Ben Clifton
VFL Top up players
James Allan, Nathan Foley, Josh Bartel
If we can do this, then I'll be totally over our trade period, cos our drafting would have been absolute magic.
P.S: Draft Burges, then when Ryley Dunn wants to return back home and play with best mate Kane Tenace, as well as Shannon Byrnes, we trade Burges to Fremantle. Logical ;) ;) ;)

Where are all the Darren Bradshaw fans?

I'm pretty sure it's 3.
This year we had:
1. Andrew Carrazzo
2. Shannon Byrnes
3. Jeff Smith
4. Travis Jorgensen
5. Will Slade
Slade was still a rookie player this year. He only played senior due to us having only 1 veteren listed player.

You're forgetting that we now have 2 veterans, thus meaning we can only have 4 rookies in 2004.
With Byrnes and Smith, we only have two spots left.

If Geelong wanted Furfaro should have picked him up today in the National Draft.
Brisbane has priority on Queensland players for the rookie draft. Furfaro is certain to go on the Lions' list as a rookie.

We didn't need him once we got David Haynes in the trade period. They're similar type players.

I'd prefer they go for another kid, not overly fussed who, Allan perhaps. They are all names to me.

So is there consensus that we only have two rookie list spots available?

Yes.
Two rookie slots, 1 slot for the PSD.

Too small. Good player but lacks size.

One of the Rookie selections will be used on Dan Jordan who played in the VFL last year.
If Shane Harvey is there at Geelong's pick in the PSD, he will be taken, make no mistake.

Seriously?
Danny Jordan is a gun, I'd definitely be happy with that! :)
A few queries over Jordan:
1) Is he still eligible to be placed as a rookie (Age-Wise)?
2) Why not draft a good young kid like Furfaro, Clifton, Surjan etc. and allow Jordan to play with the VFL another year as a top-up player? From what I can remember of him, he was a medium sized forward. Don't we have a stack of those at the club already (S.Johnson, Gardiner, Haynes, Mackie etc.)?
Don't get me wrong, I've seen Jordan play and I reckon he's worth a shot, but I still would draft a good kid for a spot on the rookie list. There are a heap of good talent this year available for us, I'd rather see us draft them than him at the moment IMO.

How about Ben Marsh? The guy is OK and could be quite a handy backup ruckmen in the event of (or when) King goes down with injury.

He's a middle sized forward, but he can take a grab, something that isn't really heard of at the club ;)
And as for the technical details, like can he go on the rookie list etc... I have no idea. He'd be worth the punt in the PSD, though.

lol yeh right. Ben Marsh? Just saying his name makes me laugh. The guy is a joke, and so are you if you reckon Geelong should consider drafting him.
We have enough ruckmen on our list as it stands. King, Chambers, Loats, Blake. That's exactly why we got Loats, to back up King and Chambers. We also have Jeff Smith on the Rookie list if need be, and Playfair, Graham, and Mooney have shown they can pinch-hit in the ruck

The thing is, we have enough mid-sized forwards as it is. Whether the bloke can take to a grab or not is really not that relevent. Even if he could take a grab, that really wouldn't help. Geelong need tall forwards who can take a grab. Drafting Jordan simply because he is a decent grab won't help, as we can't expect him to be a key target. Our mid-sized forwards are expected to float the flanks, and take maybe 4-5 grabs a game, to act as a cover for our big guys. And as of such, we have enough of them. I expect Johnno, Haynes and Mackie to take care of that.

Yes he is. I agree with your sentiments about mid sized forwards especialy since he is not overly athletic. In spite of this i think he is worth a rookie spot.
Seriously?
Bit up in the air now so many youngsters got through in the draft but is very much in the mix, and i believe we will take him.

Before the trade/draft period he might have been worth a punt. The additions of Haynes and Thurley mean we don't really need to take another risk on a suspect forward.
