New Power recruit Brad Symes, speaking in a press conference at the completion of Saturday’s national draft, has assured the media and supporters that despite coming from a passionate Crows family, he’s “stoked” to be at the Power and is looking forward to meeting the players and being around the club.

“I was pretty stoked this morning to hear my name called out,” said Symes. “I was taking it pretty easy the last few days, but coming into today and a couple of my mates (Central District teammates Sam Butler and Jay Nash) got called out a bit earlier than me, so I was getting a bit nervous then, so I was relieved to hear my name called out, and I’m staying at home too which is a good thing.

“Mum’s a diehard Crows supporter so it will take a bit to convert her, but dad’s come around, and my brother and sister will get on board too.

“The family are definitely happy that I’m not shifting away. I’ll be moving into Adelaide, because Gawler’s a bit far away, but I guess I’ll get to see them a bit more than once every couple of months, so they’ll be very happy."

Symes, who listened to the draft via the AFL website, said he hadn’t had much contact with the club, so the selection was a little bit of a surprise, but the fact that he had some friends at the club already would make the transition easier.

“I spoke with Alan Stewart back in June, but that’s the only time I spoke with anyone from back at Port, so I didn’t have a lot of idea about what would happen the day, but it was great to hear the name read out, number 30 to Port.

“I thought I might go somewhere between 25 and 40 and Port had two or three picks in there so I thought I was a bit of a chance maybe to go here, so it all worked out.

“I had a chat with Choco about an hour ago, him and Alan (recruiting manager Alan Stewart) are in Melbourne and they just rang up from there, it was just a general chat, they didn’t tell me too much.

“I’m glad to be out at Port because I have a couple of mates like Steven Salopek, and Clarko (assistant coach Alastair Clarkson) coached me last year, so I’ve got a few guys that I know here, and then it will be a buzz to be training with the other guys that I’ve been watching on the TV for the last five years."

Symes has said that his immediate goals are pretty simple, and importantly involve earning the respect of his teammates.

“Hit the track early, and just work as hard as I can through the pre-season is probably the first goal I have, you can’t do much more than that at this stage, and if the opportunity comes to get a few early games in then I’ll take that, but I just want to get to know the players, get to know the group, and work as hard as I can and earn the guys’ respect.”

Onya Eddie!

I can only hope that Alan's lack of contact with Symes was because it was unnecssary due to already having his claws deep in Central District.

Good kid. I went to School with him and has always been a stand out footy player and cricketer. Always popular with us girls too;) Really good pick up, he's not the best player going around but is a real competitive team man, always hard at it and could definately be a future leader, the sort of guy you love having around the club.
