Waugh to reveal future plans
Australian Test captain Steve Waugh will make a "major announcement" today on his playing future.
Waugh will hold a press conference at 10.30am (AEDT) in the Members Dining Room at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Waugh made his Test debut against India in 1985, so far playing 164 Tests at an average of 51.25.
The 38-year-old's twin brother Mark retired from international cricket in 2002 after he was dropped from the Test team.

Good.
He was a gr8 batsman and a great leader but the time has come for him to pass on the mantle.
Punter should take over. He has proved all his doubters wrong by keeping the one day squad the best in the world even when some of our better players have not played.

hmmm...he'll probably announce that he plans to play on till we go to India in about 2007.. ;)
In all seriousness, I can't see him annoucing his retirement unless there was some major pushing from the selectors.

Just saw a report on 9, they seem convinced he'll retire. If it's effective immediately it'll mean there's a batting spot up for grabs. Katich has Lehmann's spot, what about Hodge? He'll get a bat today against the Indians too.

News.com.au has stated that he will be retiring at the end of the Series in Sydney.
My prediction, he will be named Australian of the Year in 2005!!! Watch this space.
You have to remember that being Captain of the best team in Australia is the 2nd most important job in Australia, IMO I think its the 1st most important job because the prime minister doesn't count.

Yeah, but Mark Waugh doesn't trash cars and bash people after losing a game of cricket though, like other bulldogs supporters do when they happen to lose a game of footy.

 14 people got arressted at the RU final! No one made any mention of it!!! When one or two people get arressted at Bulldogs games It's front page news! WHy because they are of Middle Eastern Appearance and live in the Bankstown area... Double Standard racist Journalist **** me! The people arrested at the Union game probably live in the Northern districts and are Anglo-Saxon... So lets keep it under the carpet:mad:

I hope so, because it will be great to see the farewells from the crowds (particularly Sydney and Melbourne). I still remember being at Adelaide Oval for Boonies last test, get goose-bumps everytime I think about it. We havent seen enough of it with our Aussie side (Taylor and Border), it goes over terrific in the AFL

I wonder if he was given a slight push by the selectors, I'm sure we will find out one day.

I would say Clarke. Nothing like bringing in a young guy now, especially as he has alot of talent. Showed great skills during the TVS series in India. Good player. Future captain perhaps??
About time.
Michael Clarke has entered the building.

Yer Clarke is def ready to step up, big shoes to fill, he might not get a spot cemented with the likes of katich, Boof and Love around but ina few years time that spot will be his own.

Thank you to Steve Waugh for all the wonderful memories
A true champion of Australian sport who will be missed.
It will be great for the fans at the four test venues to say goodbye in style.
Ricky Ponting - you have a great deal to live up to following three great captains in Border Talyor and Waugh. I think he is up to the challenge.
Katich Love Lehman and Clarke will probably all go on the tour to Sri Lanka I would say.

what an absolute legend Steven Waugh has been.
After a rough start into the test arena, he has dominated all comers and has proven to be the most consistent batsmen of the last 10 years.
Since and including the Ashes series, he has managed to maintain an incredible average of 58, averaging over 45 against all teams he has played excluding Pakistan (which he averaged 44.33).
Likewise in that period he has average over 45 in each continent, and has averaged over 50 in each country except India (46.20) and Sri Lanka (16.60).
In the same period he has played in 35 test series:
13 times averaged above 60
6 times averaged in the 50's
4 times averaged in the 40's
4 times he has averaged between 35 and 40
6 times has averaged below 35
2 series he didn't recieve an average for as he didn't get out (both of those he scored over 150 runs in as well)
just the fact that he consistently scored runs against whoever he came up against, he didn't just belt the crap teams, than struggled against the good teams, thus raising his average unfairly - he was good against showever he played against, surely marks him up there as one of the greats.

514 runs to go - it would require an immensely big series from Tugga but not out of his range by any means....

he would also need india to be reasonably competitive, so he can bat for more than 1 innings per test.

Cox deserved it more than Slater - deservedness features very lowly on the selection criteria. They will invariably go for the exciting youngster, rather than the veteran Pura Cup run machine.
Can't say I blame them.

A bit harsh calling God an idiot.
In response to your question, I honestly believe that the best thing for Australian cricket is to nurture as many young guys into the team, whilst we are still winning... If the champion veterans continue to play as long as they can, then all retire, we will be stuck with a team of youngsters, no experience.

Good call from Steve Waugh to announce that this will be his last 4 tests before retiring. It's his call and by announcing it up front he gets to maintain control over the timing of the end unlike Healy, Mark Edward etc etc.
This way he also gets a proper and fitting farewell for the absolute champion he has been for Australian cricket. Four tests for the australian public to show their appreciation for the great man of Australian cricket.
Thirdly, all the speculation he's faced the last two years regarding his future is made redundant and he can concentrate on smiting the Indians! The media can now worry about the important things in this world like Clarke v Lehmann v Hodge v Love (just like Big Footy!! ;) )
Well done Stephen Waugh.

The best thing for Australian cricket is to keep smashing all comers in both forms of the game. Winning is no 1.
The second best thing is to have a succession plan of sorts (nurturing the next generation) in place for when Waugh, McGrath, Warney (and then after them Gilly, Hayden, Langer etc) head into retirement.

Perth already had their test. Question is, why isn't Bellerive getting a test? Maybe you should ask why Steve didn't announce his retirement prior to the Zimbo series, they you would have had a chance to farewell him.
Steve Waugh going means Boof is back in for Sri Lanka, so no point guessing who else might come in. Katich will probably keep his spot, and Boof will come back, except for Waugh rather than Katich as might have been anticipated.

Ah well, the best cricketer i've ever seen is finally going to call it a day :(

yea i think he mighta got a little bit of a nudge from the ACB.
It seems to me that he would've been great to have on the Indian tour - the hardest place in the world to tour too (outside of Australia) you'd want all the experience in the world.
If Clarke gets throw in the deep end and struggles over there it could set him back two years........

More relief for England as Waugh declares
Gereurd Roberts
Wednesday November 26, 2003
The Guardian
Just when you thought that things couldn't get any better for English sport, they have: Steve Waugh, our cricketing nemesis, is quitting.
News that
ADVERTISEMENT
long-suffering bowlers will never again have to face the man who has seemingly made it his life's work to crush the spirit of a generation of English players should add to the sense of national celebration.
Waugh, 38, who has rewritten the record books in an all-conquering career, announced last night that he will retire from international cricket in front of his own fans in Sydney after the final test of the forth coming series against India in January. He has already played a record 164 tests and scored more than 10,000 runs, including 32 centuries - three more than the legendary Don Bradman. Nearly a third of those runs have been against England, including 10 centuries, in a reign of supremacy that began in the 1980s.
"My present form and fitness suggests I could play on but all good things must come to an end," he said last night.
Waugh had planned to depart the international arena following next year's tour of India, the only place bar Bangladesh he has never won a series, but said he wants to leave cricket on a high .
You do think that they could have had some grace and actually say congratulations on an outstanding career. Oh well, what can you expect from the English media!

Two tests for Sydney although most of the Sydney-siders either didn't know about it or could give a rip about it (I suspect the latter). You'd think with six home tests that Bellerive would have got a look in. Attendance wise they would've done better than the second test in Sydney.
Looking at it from that perspective, Perth was not hard done by in missing the opportunity to say farewell to Steve. Perth was lucky to get a test at all

Well done on an outstanding career Tugga.
Me thinks the selectors might have had something to do with this.
It's very similar to Border's retirement. Stubborn resistance, followed by expressions of interest in playing on for a while yet - and then suddenly a retirement announcement!
